Far more than a fine horse portraitist, George Stubbs was a painter and a printmaker of the highest importance, on a par with his great contemporaries Hogarth, Reynolds and Gainsborough. An artist / scientist who emulated Leonardo da Vinci, Stubbs tirelessly explored the natural world and new ways of representing it. Born the son of a Liverpool tradesman, Stubbs was self-taught and first struggled in obscurity as a northern provincial painter. Robin Blake's book uncovers Stubb's origins and some of the secrets of his youth: sympathy with the Jacobite rebels and Catholocism; and a previously undocumented wife and family in York. A 'niece', Mary, became his mistress and lifelong companion, working alongside him as he dissected the carcasses of horses. In 1766, he published these investigations as The Anatomy Of The Horse, which was his breakthrough, leading to commissions from the most powerful men in Georgian Britain. By tracing the network of patronage and friendship through which George Stubbs operated, Robin Blake reveals the remarkable succession of animals, people and ideas which inspired him. Stubbs emerges as a man of huge energy and complex sensibility whose artistry was informed by science, politics, literature, classical art and - above all - nature itself. Hard cover, with brown boards and dust jacket, in good condition.

Paperback. English. Harper Collins. 1998. In fair condition. The gripping finale to Robin Hobb's classic Farseer trilogy, not reissued in gorgeous new livery. Keystone. Gate. Crossroads. Catalyst. Fitz is about to discover the truth about the Fool's prophecy. Having been resurrected from his fatal tortures in Regal's dungeons, Fitz has once more foiled Regal's attempts to be rid of him. Now, back in his own body, and after months of rehabilitation, Fitz begins the painful and slow process of learning the ways of a man again. Under the watchful eye of Burrich, old King Shrewd's Stablemaster, Fitz must learn to cast off the wild but carefree ways of the wolf and enter once more the human world: a world beset ever more viciously by the relentless Red Ship Raiders who are now left free to plunder any coastal town they please. But more immediately, a world in which he finds he is utterly alone. Regal has stripped the kingdom of its riches and retired to the inland city of Tradeford. Of Verity, on his quest to find the legendary Elderings, there has been no word; Molly, Kettricken and the Fool have all vanished. Unless Fitz can find Verity and help him in his quest, the Six Duchies will perish and there will be no safe place to live.

David Philip, 2005, As new PB.   To mark the 50th anniversary of the South African Council for English Education, this collection brings together the work of writers who either edited English Alive or were originally published in English Alive. Now they are active writers - poets, playwrights, novelists, print journalists, radio journalists, TV scriptwriters. They have contributed from their work a variety of pieces - truly a celebration of writing - that range from travel writing in verse through eye-witness accounts and poems and diary-entries and movie reviews to biographical and historical investigation and writing for teens and for children. And each writer offers a short reflection 'On Writing'. Some of South Africa's foremost writers are joined here by new voices, and the collection is graced by a gift contribution from South Africa's first winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Nadine Gordimer. 248 pp.

Book still in an excellent unmarked condition.   >>>     I guess I never considered to put this book in my Goodreads library because it isn't "my" book... it's my daughter's.  But given the number of times that I have read through it this year, I realized I like it a whole lot. And hey! It's a book that I've read! So who cares if it wasn't exactly one of my choosing. I particularly love the poems... through them I learned about Christopher Robin's brother, John. (I didn't know Christopher Robin had a brother!) My daughter loves the Heffalump story - especially the conclusion, which is sometimes the only part of the story that she'll let me read.:) Overall, it's a wonderful collection.  (Goodreads) *N.B.*  If you buy more than one book from me on the same day you only pay R 6 extra postage on each of  the additional books  – Please see what else I have to offer, it might just be worth your while – Also note that I am only able to post once a week.
