Book of Remembrance: Rhodesia Native Regiment & Rhodesian African Rifles, 19161981 (Gerry van Tonder) Over the years since 1980 when Rhodesia became Zimbabwe, much has been written and recorded about the various regiments that served the country of Rhodesia from the early pioneers in the 1890's, right through to the day that these fine units marched off their respective parade grounds for the last time and into the august annals of history.  Much of this service for the older regiments, such as the Rhodesia Regiment, the British South Africa Police, the Rhodesia Native Regiment and the Rhodesian African Rifles, was as a contribution to the British Empires war efforts during the South African War, both World Wars, and other regional conflicts of the 1950's and 1960's.  This Book of Remembrance has been specifically compiled as a lasting tribute to the men of the Rhodesia Native Regiment (RNR) and its successor the Rhodesian African Rifles (RAR) who, during the proud and honourable life of these units, made the ultimate sacrifice. It is not a definitive history of these regiments, as this has been admirably done in books such as Masodja and Ragtime Soldiers.  Accordingly, the book briefly looks at the history of each of the regiments and their battalions, with pictorial depictions of uniforms, badges, theatres of operation and colours. Chapters are also dedicated to those who received honours and awards for bravery and dedication to duty, with citations where it has been possible to source.  Nominal rolls, some incomplete, of commanding officers, officers and senior non-commissioned officers add to the overall remembrance theme of the book. The main content is the various Rolls of Honour, covering all the major conflicts and areas of operation in which the two units saw active service. This book is a record of the insignia and history of the Rhodesian armed forces from inception to 1980. Rhodesia had a fascinating history that characterised the pioneer spirit of early Africa. The continent of Africa was in a stage of being colonised by the various European countries. The pioneers of Rhodesia followed in the footsteps of the early Portuguese explorers and the inquisitive and bold such as David Livingstone and Cecil John Rhodes led the way. Legends were born out of the bravery and tenacity of the early settlers. It must be noted that the politics and motivations of the various political parties are not discussed in this book at all. There are many writers who have looked at this from different viewpoints and there are many books published on the subject. The purpose of this book is not to repeat the good or the bad of the motives of the leaders and politicians of the country. It is, rather, a reflection on the spirit and actions of the military kith and kin of a country. Paperback, 156 pages Published November 2009 4th Edition This book is Printed-On-Demand and a possible waiting period & delayed delivery may apply.

The pioneers of Rhodesia have staked their claims and stocked their farms in the land they have carved as their own. But in the hills, the Matabele indunas are preparing for the bloody rebellion which will scar their opponents for ever - and etch for them the same legacy for generations to come. I couldn't get into this and abandoned it halfway through. ALL THE DAYS WERE SUMMER.The year is and young Danny Davidson is confused. He is expected to despise the german prisoners of war from the camp just outside town. But one os them has been kind and he is the only person who can save Danny's dog from destruction. Then the rains begin and in the fight for survival Danny learns that patriotism counts for little when measured against the gift of compassion. A lovely story, quite thought provoking. WINNER HARRIS. Rhodesiana Reprint Library: Volume 10 Eleven Years in Central South Africa by Thomas Morgan Thomas tells the story of the missionary party that became the first permanent white settlers in Matabeleland, and includes detailed notes on the fauna and flora encountered on their long trek. Book in very good condition. Dust jacket has a slight tear and a sticker on the spine. An important surviving source for the study of the spectacular and short-lived kingdom of Ndebele. In the literature of pre-conquest Rhodesia, Thomas' book stands out by virtue of its ethnographical and political material about the Ndebele under Mzilikazi and Lebengula and its description of the momentous encounter between the Christian mission activities and African societies in the pre-colonial era. AFRICA@WAR SERIES: VOLUME 7 MAU MAU: THE KENYAN EMERGENCY 195260 The Second World War forever altered the complexion of the British Empire. From Cyprus to Malaya, from Borneo to Suez, the dominoes began to fall within a decade of peace in Europe. Africa in the late 1940s and 1950s was energized by the grant of independence to India, and the emergence of a credible indigenous intellectual and political caste that was poised to inherit control from the waning European imperial powers.  The British on the whole managed to disengage from Africa with a minimum of ill feeling and violence, conceding power in the Gold Coast, Nigeria and Sierra Leone under an orderly constitutional process, and engaging only in the suppression of civil disturbances in Nyasaland and Northern Rhodesia as the practicalities of a political handover were negotiated. In Kenya, however, matters were different.  A vociferous local settler lobby had accrued significant economic and political authority under a local legislature, coupled with the fact that much familial pressure could be brought to bear in Whitehall by British settlers of wealth and influence, most of whom were utterly irreconciled to the notion of any kind of political handover. Mau Mau was less than a liberation movement, but much more than a mere civil disturbance. Its historic importance is based primarily on the fact that the Mau Mau campaign was one of the first violent confrontations in sub-Saharan Africa to take place over the question of the self-determination of the masses. It also epitomized the quandary suffered by the white settler communities of Africa who had been promised utopia in an earlier century, only to be confronted in a post-war world by the completely unexpected reality of black political aspiration.  This book journeys through the birth of British East Africa as a settled territory of the Empire, and the inevitable politics of confrontation that emerged from the unequal distribution of resources and power. It covers the emergence and growth of Mau Mau, and the strategies applied by the British to confront and nullify what was in reality a tactically inexpert, but nonetheless powerfully symbolic black expression of political violence.  That Mau Mau set the tone for Kenyan independence somewhat blurred the clean line of victory and defeat. The revolt was suppressed and peace restored, but events in the colony were nevertheless swept along by the greater movement of Africa toward independences, resulting in the eventual establishment of majority rule in Kenya in 1964.
