Ghost Colonies (Lost and Found in History) - Ed Wright- 2009 - Paperback in nearly new condition. A litany of historical madness and disasters from the Vikings in Greenland and America to Friedrich Nietzsche’s Aryan supremacist sister in South America and finishing with the tragedy of Jim Jones and the Peoples’ Temple. The London Sunday Times wrote: “successful colonies are the stuff of schoolroom history: everyone knows about the Pilgrim Fathers at Plymouth Rock and Captain Cook at Botany Bay. In this collection of 25 tales of colonies lost, burnt, abandoned or otherwise destroyed, Ed Wright proves that the murky history of colonial disaster is just as fascinating, and just as important.” The Brisbane Courier Mail wrote: “Ghost Colonies, written by established Pier 9 author Ed Wright, is the latest in a Lost and Found in History series to use the format, and is arguably the most interesting. From murderous Icelandic outcast Erik the Red’s Viking settlements in Greenland and his sons’ adventures in Arctic North America in 1000AD to the tragedy of Jonestown, Guyana, in 1978, this 320-page volume tells the story of 25 would-be utopias that failed to live up to the dream. They include a few of history’s better known colonial outpost failures, including the Scottish colony at Darien, Panama (1698-1700) and the failed utopian colonies of New Australia and Cosme in Paraguay at the end of the 19th century. For the most part, though, these are stories of more obscure colonial failures brought about by disease, ignorance, attacks by native people, political misfortune or other reasons. And Wright, who has researched his material thoroughly, tells them with a touch light enough to appeal to a wide readership. Australian readers will be interested in his detailed account of the rise and fall of the British colony at Victoria, Port Essington, on the north coast in what is now Arnhem Land. It fell prey to malaria and cyclones but not before explorer Ludwig Leichhardt stumbled into the settlement in late 1845 at the end of a 15-month overland journey from Moreton Bay that would make him famous. There’s mystery and tragedy in spades in this attractively designed book.

Lauren Huttons life fell apart at the age of thirty. She lost her husband, her career, and her father. When the future looked dark, Hutton turned to her past for inspiration. There, she rediscovered the true love of her life. It wasnt another person. Instead, this love was Sarh, the voice of Huttons own soul. Sarh had been speaking to Hutton for years, but she kept trying to tune her out through antidepressants, drugs, and overwork. As Hutton gradually realized Sarhs identity and purpose, she began to reconnect with a part of herself she had long thought lost. The pressures of adulthood, career, and relationships had stifled the creativity and curiosity she had cherished as a child. Hutton rediscovered her old passionsand now she shares her spiritual and metaphysical knowledge with you. Hutton teaches that you cant look to the Universe for guidance. She didnt find the answers to her questions out in the world but inside herself. By listening to her souls voice, Hutton realized who she was meant to be, and she transformed her life. She became spiritually fulfilled and committed herself to helping others hear their own soul voices. About the Author Lauren Hutton has devoted her life to teaching people to access their soul space. She assists them in integrating human experiences with those of the soul, the master voice within, and navigates people back to their innate creative abilities. Hutton draws wisdom from her own soul voice, Sarh, and her studies with ascended masters, those who have completed their time on earth. Hutton has previously worked as a newspaper reporter, a communications professional, a nonprofit lobbyist, a public affairs specialist, and a business owner. It is seven years since readers left Lyra and the love of her young life, Will Parry, on a park bench in Oxford's Botanic Gardens at the end of the ground-breaking, bestselling His Dark Materialssequence. Now, in The Secret Commonwealth, we meet Lyra Silvertongue. And she is no longer a child... The second volume of Sir Philip Pullman's The Book of Dust sees Lyra, now twenty years old, and her daemon Pantalaimon, forced to navigate their relationship in a way they could never have imagined, and drawn into the complex and dangerous factions of a world that they had no idea existed. Pulled along on his own journey too is Malcolm; once a boy with a boat and a mission to save a baby from the flood, now a man with a strong sense of duty and a desire to do what is right. Theirs is a world at once familiar and extraordinary, and they must travel far beyond the edges of Oxford, across Europe and into Asia, in search for what is lost - a city haunted by daemons, a secret at the heart of a desert, and the mystery of the elusive Dust. The Secret Commonwealth is truly a book for our times; a powerful adventure and a thought-provoking look at what it is to understand yourself, to grow up and make sense of the world around you. This is storytelling at its very best from one of our greatest writers. Jeremy Clarkson finds the world a perplexing place. So much so, in fact, that he wrote a book about it. But despite the appearance of the best selling "The World According To Clarkson", things don’t seem to have changed much. And so Jeremy’s having another go. In "And Another Thing", our exasperated hero discovers that: he inadvertently dropped a bomb on North Carolina; we’re all going to explode at the age of 62; Russians look bad in Speedo's. But not as bad as Brits; no one should have to worry about being Bill Oddie’s long lost sister; cooking a Sunday Roast is one thing. Gravy is quite another; and, he should probably be nicer about David Beckham. But while these things play on his mind, the world remains Jeremy’s favourite place to be. On the whole, it’s brilliant. It’s just the idiots, meddlers and do-gooders who spoil it for the rest of us. Laugh-out-loud funny and as straight-talking as ever, Clarkson bursts their pointless little bubble, while celebrating the special things that we should hold dear. Sit back and enjoy as Jeremy puts the world to rights.. Slight surface scratching on cover and light creasing on spine. Folding mark on bottom right hand corner.  Light yellowish spots on first and last pages.  Some browning on thickness of pages due to storage.  Rest of book in good, readable condition.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days In 1935 Evelyn Shillington started a diary, little knowing the years of turmoil it would cover, and how insightful her experiences as an army wife would be to the following generations. Eve joined her beloved husband, Captain Rex Shillington, whenever she could on his postings giving her a unique view into army life. Through the abdication crisis, to the turbulent years of the Second World War and ending in war-ravaged Italy, Eve documented it all with an inimitable spirit and brave humour. The diaries lay forgotten in an attic for years until an enterprising antiques dealer discovered them by chance. Published seventy years after Eve wrote in her diary for the last time, they offer a new perspective into life on the home front, a first-hand account that was almost lost forever. Newtons heretical yet equation-incisive writings on theology, spirituality, alchemy, and prophecy, written in secret alongside his Principia Mathematica Shows how Newtons brilliance extended far beyond math and science into alchemy, spirituality, prophecy, and the search for lost continents such as Atlantis Explains how he was seeking to rediscover the one true religion that existed prior to the Flood of Noah, when science and spirituality were one Examines Newtons alternate timeline of prehistory and his study of prophecy through the Book of Revelations, including his prediction of Apocalypse in the year 2060 Isaac Newton (1643-1727) is still regarded by the world as the greatest scientist who ever lived. He invented calculus, discovered the binomial theorem, explained the rainbow, built the first reflecting telescope, and explained the force of gravity. In his famous masterpiece, Principia Mathematica, he described the mechanics of the physical universe with unimagined precision, proving the cosmos was put together according to laws. The perfection of these laws implied a perfect legislator. To Newton, they were proof that God existed. At the same time Newton was writing Principia Mathematica, he was writing a twin volume that he might have called, had it been completed, Principia Theologia--Principles of Theology. This other masterpiece of Newton, kept secret because of the heresies it contained, consists of thousands of essays providing equation-incisive answers to the spiritual questions that have plagued mankind through the ages. Examining Newtons secret writings, John Chambers shows how his brilliance extended into alchemy, spirituality, the search for lost continents such as Atlantis, and a quest to uncover the corrupted texts that were rife in the Bibles of his time. Although he was a devout Christian, Newtons work on the Bible was focused not on restoring the original Jewish and Christian texts but on rediscovering the one true religion that existed prior to the Flood of Noah, when science and spirituality were one. The author shows that a single thread runs through Newtons metaphysical explorations: He is attempting to chart the descent of mans soul from perfection to the present day. The author also examines Newtons alternate timeline of ancient history and his study of prophecy through the Book of Revelations, including his prediction of an Apocalypse in the year 2060 followed by a radically transformed world. He shows that Newtons great hope was that these writings would provide a moral compass for humanity as it embarked upon the great enterprise that became our technological world. One of the many ways in which the apartheid regime maintained its stranglehold in South Africa was through controlling the freedom of speech and the flow of information, in an effort to silence the voices of those who opposed it. United by the ideals of freedom and equality, but also nuanced by a wide variety of persuasions, the 'voices of liberation' were many: African nationalists, communists, trade-unionists, pan-Africanists, English liberals, human rights activists, Christians, Hindus, Muslims and Jews, to name but a few. The Voices of liberation series ensures that the debates and values that shaped the liberation movement are not lost. The series offers a unique combination of biographical information with selections from original speeches and writings in each volume. By providing access to the thoughts and writings of some of the many men and women who fought for the dismantling of apartheid, this series invites the contemporary reader to engage directly with the rich history of the struggle for democracy. This volume presents a brief biography of South Africa's first Nobel Peace Prize winner, Albert Luthuli, followed by a selection from the many speeches he made, first as President of the Natal branch of the African National Congress and then as President-General. The book concludes with a reflection on his legacy from a current perspective and a further reading list. A set of 20 encyclopedia's. At the back of each volume seems to be a section with creative practical exercises - like plays and making a catamaran to mention just two. As I look at these books I wonder what value to place on them. They seem to represent more than just the info inside them - but a very real way of researching info that leads to feelings of accomplishment, a way that is unfortunately becoming lost in our computerised age.
