AFRICA@WAR SERIES: VOLUME 6 CONGO UNRAVELLED: Military Operations from Independence to the Mercenary Revolt, 196068 Clearly and comprehensively explains the intrigues of the Congo wars Colonel Mike Hoare Post-independence events in the Republic of the Congo are a veritable Gordian knot. The ambitions of Congolese political leaders, Cold War rivalry, Pan-Africanism, Belgiums continued economic interests in the countrys mineral wealth, and the strategic perceptions of other southern African states all conspired to wrack Africas second largest country with uprisings, rebellions and military interventions for almost a decade. Congo Unravelled solves the intractable complexity of this violent period by dispassionately outlining the sequence of political and military events that took place in the troubled country. The reader is systematically taken through the first military attempts to stabilize the country after independence and the two distinguishing military campaigns of the decade - the United Nations military operations (Opration des Nations Unies au Congo, or ONUC) to end the secession of the Katanga Province, and the Dragon Operations led by Belgian paratroopers, supported by the US Air Force, launched to end the insurgency in the east of the country - are chronicled in detail. Finally, the mercenary revolt - an event that tainted the reputation of the modern mercenary in Africa - is described. Lesser known military events - Irish UN forces cut off from the outside world by Katangese gendarmes and mercenaries, and a combined military operation in which Belgian paratroopers were dropped from US Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and supported by a mercenary ground force to achieve humanitarian ends - go far toward resolving the enigma surrounding post-independence Congo. Paperback, 72 pages. Illustrated throughout, including 8-page colour section.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 24 hours On 25 January , bestselling Egyptian novelist Alaa Al Aswany joined a million protestors in Tahrir Square calling for President Hosni Mubarak's departure. This was the moment he and other pro-democracy activists had been working towards, but could never be sure would come. Why did Egypt unexpectedly revolt? In a weekly newspaper column Al Aswany had been exposing the injustices of the Mubarak regime for years, arguing that 'democracy is the solution'. Here the most incisive, prescient and urgent of these pieces are gathered together in English for the first time. He examines the conditions that made Egypt ripe for revolution, from Mubarak's monopoly on power and his determination to install his son as his successor, to the poverty in which half the population live. He also writes passionately about Egyptian society generally, including the treatment of women, free speech and the role of the State police. On the State of Egypt is a brilliant and devastating critique of Mubarak's rule, and an inspiring portrait of a people's determination to rise up and make their voices heard. Binding: Softcover Pages: 285 Dimensions: 22 x 15 x 2 cm +++ by A.C. Jordan +++ The Wrath of the Ancestors It is the story of Jongilanga, a young, modern man who goes to the University College of Fort Hare and who, unknown to even himself, is the heir to the Mpondomise throne. Identified by a tribal elder, he leaves Fort Hare, before he has completed his studies to challenge a corrupt uncle who thought he would become the new king. Jongilanga becomes King of the Mpondomise but his progressive ideas prove to be too far ahead for most of his people, enabling his uncle to lead a revolt against him. Jongilanga's life ends tragically and prematurely but, eventually, his uncle also has to flee. Jordan does not pass judgement, but through the lives of ordinary and ambitious people he contrasts Christian converts with those holding traditional beliefs, school people with 'red ochre' people, boarding school activities with the assembly at the royal palace. One of the central themes of the novel is cultural conflict between the more western way of life and African customs and traditions.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The Belgian Congo: A verdant area spanning the central regions of Africa - giant, somnambulant, beautiful and menacing. In 1960 the Belgian authorities, who had for years ruled the Congo with a stern hand, opted to grant independence to the country's hugely diverse population. On June 30, 1960, the Congo became independent. Within five days the country had fallen into four squabbling parts - the central government in the old capital of Leopoldville, a rebel movement in the eastern capital of Stanleyville, an independent republic of Kasai in the South West and an independent Katanga in the Southern regions with its capital at Elizabethville. United Nations troops were deployed in a 'peace keeping' role and after three wars succeeded in quashing the Katangese coup. But they had hardly finished their task when rebel 'sambas' in the Eastern Congo began sweeping across the Congo with the intention of capturing Leopoldville.;Supported by the CIA, the central Congolese government recruited mercenaries and fought back. By 1954 the mercenaries had taken Stanleyville and smothered the revolt. In 1966 and 1967 the Katangese revolted and were repressed. On two subsequent occasions, one in 1977 and the other in 1978, Katangese rebels operating from North Angola again attacked Katanga province - now called Shaba. They were defeated.

AFRICA@WAR SERIES: VOLUME 7 MAU MAU: THE KENYAN EMERGENCY 195260 The Second World War forever altered the complexion of the British Empire. From Cyprus to Malaya, from Borneo to Suez, the dominoes began to fall within a decade of peace in Europe. Africa in the late 1940s and 1950s was energized by the grant of independence to India, and the emergence of a credible indigenous intellectual and political caste that was poised to inherit control from the waning European imperial powers.  The British on the whole managed to disengage from Africa with a minimum of ill feeling and violence, conceding power in the Gold Coast, Nigeria and Sierra Leone under an orderly constitutional process, and engaging only in the suppression of civil disturbances in Nyasaland and Northern Rhodesia as the practicalities of a political handover were negotiated. In Kenya, however, matters were different.  A vociferous local settler lobby had accrued significant economic and political authority under a local legislature, coupled with the fact that much familial pressure could be brought to bear in Whitehall by British settlers of wealth and influence, most of whom were utterly irreconciled to the notion of any kind of political handover. Mau Mau was less than a liberation movement, but much more than a mere civil disturbance. Its historic importance is based primarily on the fact that the Mau Mau campaign was one of the first violent confrontations in sub-Saharan Africa to take place over the question of the self-determination of the masses. It also epitomized the quandary suffered by the white settler communities of Africa who had been promised utopia in an earlier century, only to be confronted in a post-war world by the completely unexpected reality of black political aspiration.  This book journeys through the birth of British East Africa as a settled territory of the Empire, and the inevitable politics of confrontation that emerged from the unequal distribution of resources and power. It covers the emergence and growth of Mau Mau, and the strategies applied by the British to confront and nullify what was in reality a tactically inexpert, but nonetheless powerfully symbolic black expression of political violence.  That Mau Mau set the tone for Kenyan independence somewhat blurred the clean line of victory and defeat. The revolt was suppressed and peace restored, but events in the colony were nevertheless swept along by the greater movement of Africa toward independences, resulting in the eventual establishment of majority rule in Kenya in 1964. Paperback, 72 pages

It became renowned in July 1839 as the site of a slave revolt by Mende captives, who had been enslaved in Sierra Leone, and were being transported for sale between Havana, Cuba, and other Caribbean islands. The African captives took control of the ship in July 1839, killing some of the crew and ordering the survivors to sail the ship to Africa. The Spanish survivors secretly maneuvered the ship north and La Amistad was captured off the coast of Long Island by the brig USS Washington. The Mende and La Amistad were interned in Connecticut while federal court proceedings were undertaken for their disposition. The owners of the ship and Spanish government claimed the slaves as property; but the US had banned the African trade and argued that the Mende were legally free. ____________________________________________________  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.
