Using and reflecting on the medium of film is a pivotal part of her work. In detailed interviews with the artist, this book sheds light on her work during the last five years. Runa Islam was born in Bangladesh in 1970 and today lives in London. She deconstructs linear narrative patterns and time sequences, making the act of seeing--both watching and recognizing what is seen--the central focus of her films. In 2008, Islam was nominated for the Turner Prize for visual art. Features Summary Turner Prize nominee Runa Islam discusses her work over the past five years in a collection of illuminating interviews. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days `Composed of over sixty per cent water itself, a human body isn't naturally buoyant. It will float only for as long as there is air in its lungs, before gradually sinking to the bottom as the air seeps out. If the water is very cold or deep, it will remain there, undergoing a slow, dark dissolution that can take years. But if the water is warm enough for bacteria to feed and multiply, then it will continue to decompose. Gases will build up in the intestines, increasing the body's buoyancy until it floats again. And the dead will literally rise... ` It was on a Friday evening that forensics consultant Dr David Hunter took the call: a Detective Inspector Lundy from the Essex force. Just up the coast from Mersea Island, near a place called Backwaters, a badly decomposed body has been found and the local police would welcome Hunter's help with the recovery and identification... Because they would like it to be that of Leo Villiers, the 31 year-old son of a prominent local family who went missing weeks ago, and they are under pressure to close the case. Villiers was supposed to have been having an affair with a married woman, Emma Derby. She too is missing, and the belief is that the young man disposed of his lover, and then killed himself. If only it was so straightforward. But Hunter has his doubts about the identity of the remains. The hands and feet are missing, the face no longer recognisable. Then further remains are found - and suddenly these remote wetlands are giving up yet more grisly secrets. As Hunter is slowly but surely drawn into a toxic mire of family secrets and resentments, local lies and deception, he finds himself unable, or perhaps unwilling, to escape even though he knows that the real threat comes from the living, not the dead. With its eerie and claustrophobic sense of place, explosive heart-in-mouth moments, and viscerally authentic forensics and police procedural detail, coupled with David Hunter's own uncanny ability to understand the living as much as the dead, The Restless Dead stands as a masterclass in crime fiction and marks the stunning return of one of the genre's best. I had attached myself to the birds. I couldn't move on until the birds moved on, and the birds couldn't move on without the spring. One winter, after an enforced period of recuperation, William Fiennes finds himself restless and yearning for adventure. He travels to Texas, where he begins a quest to trace the million-strong flocks of snow geese making their spring flight thousands of miles north to the Arctic tundra. On his epic journey he meets people from every walk of life, from ex-nuns to train fanatics, and their stories resound with the longing to arrive at the right place in the world. Shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize and winner of the Hawthornden Prize, The Snow Geese is a poignant and lyrical paean to the richness and wonder of the world around us.   2010. Soft cover; 332 pages. Very good condition; like new. Under 1kg Tony Fitzjohn, an internationally renowned field expert on African wildlife, is best known for the eighteen years he spent helping Born Free ’s George Adamson return more than forty leopards and lions—including the celebrated Christian—to the wild in central Kenya. Born Wild is the memoir of Fitzjohn’s extraordinary life. It shows how a man driven by an impossibly restless spirit can do almost anything, from being a bouncer in a brothel, to surviving a vicious lion attack, to fighting with the Tanzanian government, to being appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by the Queen.   A notorious hell-raiser given to scrapes with bandits, evil policemen, and wicked politicians, who has been shot at by poachers and chewed up by lions, Fitzjohn is also a wonderful raconteur. Shenanigans aside, he belongs to that rare species of humans who have sought refuge and meaning in a life truly dedicated to the restoration of the animal kingdom. Many times Tony Fitzjohn has put his life on the line for the cause in which he believes. Born Wild is the story of that passion.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days In nine luminous stories of love and loss, loneliness and hope, Judith Hermann's stunning debut collection paints a vivid and poignant picture of a generation ready and anxious to turn their back on the past, to risk uncertainty in search of a fresh, if fragile, equilibrium. An international bestseller and translated into twelve languages, Summerhouse, Later heralds the arrival of one of Germanys most arresting new literary talents. A restless man hopes to find permanence in the purchase of a summerhouse outside Berlin. A young girl, trapped in a paralyzing web of family stories and secrets, finally manages to break free. A granddaughter struggles to lay her grandmother's ghosts to rest. A successful and simplistic artist becomes inexplicably obsessed with an elusive and strangely sinister young girl. Against the backdrop of contemporary Berlin, possibly Europe's most vibrant and exhilarating city, Hermann's characters are as kaleidoscopic and extraordinary as their metropolis, united mostly in a furious and dogged pursuit of the elusive specter of "living in the moment." They're people who, in one way or another, constantly challenge the madness of the modern world and whose dreams of transcending the ordinary for that "narrow strip of sky over the rooftops" are deeply felt and perfectly rendered. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Tireless speech-makers and lovers of verse, the ancient Aztecs used a pictographic system to keep records of their history, geography, and rituals. Many of these accounts were destroyed after the Spanish conquest; but fortunately, a few survived, including records kept by the invaders. This book by an international authority on Mexican archeology and sociology presents a vivid account of that profoundly religious Aztec warrior society--from its days as a primitive people, to the early sixteenth century when a powerful government ruled with great organizational ability and restless energy. A highly readable text, accompanied by rare illustrations, describes public buildings and market places, the problems of life in a great city-state, the ruling classes and living standards, religious beliefs, the everyday lives of people--from birth to death, and much more. Amazing in scope and detail, this volume will be invaluable to students of Mexican history and of interest to anyone fascinated by this ancient civilization. Unabridged republication of the edition published by the MacMillan Company, New York, 1962. 39 black-and-white illustrations. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days On a stormy November night in 1848, a ship carrying more than a hundred Irish emigrants ran aground twenty miles off the coast of Maine. Many were saved, but some were not -- including a young girl who died crying out the name of her brother. In the present day, the artist Oisin MacDara lives in self-imposed exile on Tiranogue -- the small island where the shipwrecked Irish settled. The past is Oisin's curse, as memories of the twin sister who died tragically when he was a boy haunt him still. Then on a quiet All Hallows' Eve, a restless spirit is beckoned into his home by a candle flickering in the window: the ghost of the girl whose brief life ended on Tiranogue's shore more than a century earlier. In Oisin's house she seeks comfort and warmth, and a chance at the life that was denied her so long ago. For a lonely man chained by painful memories, nothing will ever be the same again. Herring's 2008 From Colony to Superpower has won wide acclaim from critics and readers alike. Years of Peril and Ambition: U.S. Foreign Relations, 1776-1921 is the first volume of a new split paperback edition of that masterwork, making this award-winning title accessible to those with a particular interest in the first half of the United States' history. This first volume of Herring's international narrative charts the rise of the United States from a loose grouping of British colonies huddled along the Atlantic coast of North America into an emerging world power at the end of World War I. It tells an epic story of restless settlers pushing against weak restraints; of explorers, sea captains, adventurers, merchants, and missionaries carrying American ways to new lands. It analyzes countless crises, some resulting in war and others resolved peacefully. Above all, it is the tale of United States' expansion, commercial and political, across the North American continent, into the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean regions, and, economically, worldwide. Herring brings this first segment of America's dramatic emergence as a superpower to a close with the United States' post-World War I rise to the status of the world's most powerful nation, poised-however unsteadily-for global engagement in what would be called the American Century. Years of Peril and Ambition highlights the ongoing impact of the nation's international affairs on the household names of U.S. history but also on ordinary citizens. Featuring a grand cast of characters, encompassing statesmen and presidents, diplomats and foreigners, and rogues and rascals alike, this fast-paced account illuminates the central importance of foreign relations to the existence and survival of the nation. Features Summary U.S. Foreign Relations through 1921 is the first part of From Colony to Superpower, an international narrative blends political, diplomatic, and military history with economic... In good condition. Very good, clean copy. (Nienaber I, p. 254) "At the battle of Tabanyama (20.1.1900), a prologue to the battle of Spioenkop (24.1.1900), Slegtkamp won special recognition. When the burghers evacuated a hill in the Tabanyama mountain range after a heavy bombardment, and the right flank of the Boers was exposed, Slegtkamp and two fellow scouts, Albert de Roos and Jack Hindon, climbed the hill on their own initiative and subjected the left flank of the British soldiers to heavy fire. Under the impression that the hill was strongly garrisoned, the British soldiers retreated. The morale of the other burghers now being strengthened, they reoccupied the hill. Thus the way was paved for the brilliant victory at Spioenkop four days later.... Throughout his life he supported the republican ideal and in the late thirties he joined the Ossewa-Brandwag, of which, despite his advanced age, he was an active member, later becoming general-in-chief on the Highveld. He spent his last years peacefully in his home town, Middlelburg. Slegtkamp was short and thin. Restless and at times quick-tempered, he was nevertheless a fearless man who, although he could not easily adapt to peace conditions, identified himself completely with the fate of his adopted country. Pablo Picasso has for years been hidden by the glare of publicity and a success unique in the history of art.  Yet the real Picasso has been invisible to all but his intimates. One of these, Francoise Gilot, who lived with him for ten years, has now told her story - and his - with extraordinary insight and complete frankness. She reveals the real Picasso for the first time - a genius, temperamental, articulate, restless, a man who has never ceased to fight time and convention - and yet never ceased to create.
