Original full vellum with 22-carat gold blocking, including titles to spines, armorial device to front boards and ruling to spines and front boards, gilt edges, marbled end-papers, printed on Archive Long-Life Text Paper. Illustrations throughout. Each book has it's own green sleeve. The first collected works of Sir Winston Churchill. The Centenary Edition is the only full collected works of Winston Churchill, reproducing his 50 books in 34 volumes. The Library of Imperial History went bankrupt before the projected run of 3,000 sets could be completed, so "the print run never exceeded 2,000 copies and only 1,750 sets were ever published". five million words in 19,000 pages,. Be the only owner in SA to own this beautiful set. Double value in 10 years. Great investment. Typical natural variation to the tone of the vellum bindings but overall a bright set. The slight discolouration you see is the natural aging tone to the calf skin vellum.

Sunday 15 February 1942 was, according to Sir Winston Churchill, the blackest day in the history of the British Empire. Only ten weeks earlier Japanese assault troops had waded ashore on the North-East coast of Malaya. Now the besieged British, Australian and Asian forces in Britain's so-called "impregnable citadel" were compelled to lay down their arms and some 90,000 allied service-men became prisoners of war. It was a crushing humiliation and defeat that marked the disintegration of the British Empire. Following Lord Carnarvon's successful introduction of Federation in Canada, it was thought that similar political effort, coupled with military campaigns, might succeed with the African kingdoms, tribal areas and Boer Republics in South Africa. In 1874, Sir Henry Bartle Frere was sent to South Africa as High Commissioner for the British Empire to bring such plans into being. Among the obstacles were the presence of the independent states of the South African Republic and the Kingdom of Zululand and its army. Frere, on his own initiative, without the approval of the British government and with the intent of instigating a war with the Zulu, had presented an ultimatum on 11 December 1878, to the Zulu king Cetshawyo with which the Zulu king could not comply, including disbanding his army and abandoning key cultural traditions.   Bartle Frere then sent Lord Chelmsford  to invade Zululand after this ultimatum was not met.  The war is notable for several particularly bloody battles, including an opening victory of the Zulu at the Battle of Isandlwana, followed by the defeat of a large Zulu army at Rorke's Drift  by a small force of British troops. The war eventually resulted in a British victory and the end of the Zulu nation's dominance of the region.   Sold as seen in the images.
