So she does what she does best: she opens her notebook and starts investigating. Thumbing through her late mother's address book, Rosman embarks on a cross-country odyssey, tracking down total strangers from whom she hopes to learn about a woman she once thought she couldn't know better. With a reporter's eye for detail and nuance, Rosman creates a vivid, unflinching, and unforgettable portrait of a privately remarkable mother and woman. In the process, Rosman tells a universal tale of loss and love, capturing the angst families confront when wading through the world of doctors and hospitals, the poignancy and pain that come as a life ends, and the humor that helps transform sadness into a new and powerful brand of happiness. About the product 400 x 290 mm; laminated pictorial wraps; pp. xiv + 157, incl. index; profusely illustrated with contemporary photographs; map. Trace of foxing to edges. Near-fine condition."The War Reporter is an imaginary newspaper. There was no single Republican or Boer newspaper that was published on either a daily, weekly or monthly basis for the whole duration of the Anglo-Boer War. The'editor','reporters'and'correspondents'of The War Reporter never actually existed. The aim was to publish an account of the course of the war in its totality - meaning not merely the military confrontations. The format represents the way in which the war could have been reported in a pro-Boer weekly newspaper (monthly from September 1900), published in the South African Republic as the war progressed. One of the most formidable challenges that face historians is to understand the zeitgeist or atmosphere of the period they write about. The same is true for readers of history books. A failure to understand the situation at the time makes it virtually impossible to understand the major events, the decisions taken by the major participants, the reactions of the ordinary people and the contradictions of the past in the context in which they occurred. This was my biggest challenge as I attempted to portray the world and the views of the Boers as the Anglo-Boer War progressed. The book is first and foremost an attempt to answer the question: how did the Boers experience the Anglo-Boer War?"- Author's Introduction. Books: The War Reporter. The Anglo-Boer War through the eyes of the Burghers

War of Words: Memoir of a South African Journalist by Benjamin Pogrund When Benjamin Pogrund, one of South Africa's most distinguished journalists, first began his career as a young reporter in the 1950s, "There had been little reason at that stage to believe that anything revolutionary was about to start." As the "African affairs reporter," and then deputy editor, it was Pogrund who first brought the words of black leaders like Robert Sobukwe and Nelson Mandela to the pages of South Africa's leading newspaper, the Rand Daily Mail. This was the period of apartheid in South Africa and for most of the next thirty years, the Rand Daily Mail was the country's liberal white voice against the tyranny of the Afrikaner Nationalist government. A riveting memoir and a complex commentary on apartheid and freedom of the press, War of Words offers an insider's perspective on one of the most turbulent, and arguably one of the most significant, periods in modern history.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Some fifty years ago as a cub reporter, Barbree caught space fever the night that Sputnik passed over Albany, Georgia. On a double date where the couples actually did some star gazing, Barbree recognized that exploring space would become one of the most important stories of the century. Convinced that one day astronauts would walk on the moon, Barbree moved to the then sleepy ocean-side community of Cocoa Beach, right outside Cape Canaveral, and began reporting on rockets that soared, exploded, and fizzled. In the decades to come he witnessed a parade of history as space pioneers, hucksters, groupies and politicians participated in the greatest show of technology the world had ever seen. In "Live from Cape Canaveral", Barbree offers his unique perspective on the space program. Warm and perceptive, he reminds us just how thrilling the great moments of the space race were and why America fell in love with its heroic, sometimes larger-than-life astronauts. Lauren Huttons life fell apart at the age of thirty. She lost her husband, her career, and her father. When the future looked dark, Hutton turned to her past for inspiration. There, she rediscovered the true love of her life. It wasnt another person. Instead, this love was Sarh, the voice of Huttons own soul. Sarh had been speaking to Hutton for years, but she kept trying to tune her out through antidepressants, drugs, and overwork. As Hutton gradually realized Sarhs identity and purpose, she began to reconnect with a part of herself she had long thought lost. The pressures of adulthood, career, and relationships had stifled the creativity and curiosity she had cherished as a child. Hutton rediscovered her old passionsand now she shares her spiritual and metaphysical knowledge with you. Hutton teaches that you cant look to the Universe for guidance. She didnt find the answers to her questions out in the world but inside herself. By listening to her souls voice, Hutton realized who she was meant to be, and she transformed her life. She became spiritually fulfilled and committed herself to helping others hear their own soul voices. About the Author Lauren Hutton has devoted her life to teaching people to access their soul space. She assists them in integrating human experiences with those of the soul, the master voice within, and navigates people back to their innate creative abilities. Hutton draws wisdom from her own soul voice, Sarh, and her studies with ascended masters, those who have completed their time on earth. She believes the spiritual experiences humans seek can be found inside themselves. Hutton has previously worked as a newspaper reporter, a communications professional, a nonprofit lobbyist, a public affairs specialist, and a business owner. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days From award-winning ABC News Chief National Correspondent Matt Gutman, and written using exclusive interviews and information comes the definitive account of the dramatic story that gripped the world: the miracle rescue of twelve boys and their soccer coach trapped in a flooded cave miles underground for nearly three weeks--a pulse-pounding page-turner by a reporter who was there every step of their journey out. After a practice in June 2018, a Thai soccer coach took a dozen of his young players to explore a famous but flood-prone cave. It was one of the boys' birthday, but neither he nor the dozen resurfaced. Worried parents and rescuers flocked to the mouth of a cave that seemed to have swallowed the boys without a trace. Ranging in age from eleven to sixteen, the boys were all members of the Wild Boars soccer team. When water unexpectedly inundated the cave, blocking their escape, they retreated deeper inside, taking shelter in a side cavern. While the world feared them dead, the thirteen young souls survived by licking the condensation off the cave's walls, meditating, and huddling together for warmth. In this thrilling account, ABC News Chief National Correspondent Matt Gutman recounts this amazing story in depth and from every angle, exploring their time in the cave, the failed plans and human mistakes that nearly doomed them, and the daring mission that ultimately saved them. Gutman introduces the elite team of volunteer divers who risked death to execute a plan so risky that its American planners admitted, "for us, success would have meant getting just one boy out alive." He takes you inside the meetings where life and death decisions were grimly made and describes how these heroes pulled off an improbable rescue under immense pressure, with the boys' desperate parents and the entire world watching. One of the largest rescues in history was in doubt until the very last moment. Matt Gutman covered the story intensively, went deep inside the caves himself, and interviewed dozens of rescuers, experts and eye-witnessed around the world. The result is this pulse-pounding page-turner that vividly recreates this extraordinary event in all its intensity--and documents the ingenuity and sacrifice it took to succeed. True detective meets house of cards in the electrifying first novel of a new crime series from a veteran Washington, D.C., reporter. It is murder, and the local police immediately arrest the three nearest black kids, bad boys from a notorious gang. Sully Carter, a veteran war correspondent with emotional scars far worse than the ones on his body, suspects that there's more to the case than the police would have the public know.   A Furnace Afloat: The Wreck of the Hornet and the Harrowing 4,300-mile Voyage of Its Survivors Hardcover – September 30, 2003 - Joe Jackson - 2003 - Paperback as new. On May 3, 1866, the clipper ship Hornet was consumed by fire and sank in the middle of the South Pacific. Thirty-one survivors boarded three tiny lifeboats and began the 4,300-mile voyage to the Hawaiian Islands. Along the way, they faced terrible heat, storms, starvation, treachery, mutiny and the threat of cannibalism. Those who made landfall, six weeks later, became some of the 19th century's most famous castaways. True crime veteran Jackson (Leavenworth Train, etc.) superbly retells the tale, drawing on impressive primary sources. In addition to the journals left by the captain and two passengers, Jackson incorporates interviews with the survivors conducted by a young reporter named Mark Twain, who happened to be in Hawaii at the time. (Twain's articles on the Hornet were picked up by newspapers worldwide and made his reputation, despite a mistaken byline in Harper's of "Mark Swain.") These sources allow Jackson to quote dialogue, sketch characters' thoughts and avoid the speculation that diminishes so many historical narratives. These events are dramatic enough: a thief steals bread-and murder is nearly the result; a seaman sacrifices a water ration to a sick man he fully expects to eat the next day; and mutineers huddle in the stern to plot. Jackson weaves in astute tidbits of history, philosophy and science, explaining why, for example, cannibalism is not a physiologically effective survival tactic. Vividly and sympathetically written, this is a tragic yet triumphant book about the limits of humanity and human endurance.

With a slow chill that intensifies with each heart-pounding page, Rule describes her dawning awareness that Ted Bundy, her sensitive coworker on a crisis hotline, was one of the most prolific serial killers in America. He would confess to killing at least thirty-six young women from coast to coast, and was eventually executed for three of those cases. Drawing from their correspondence that endured until shortly before Bundy's death, and striking a seamless balance between her deeply personal perspective and her role as a crime reporter on the hunt for a savage serial killer -- the brilliant and charismatic Bundy, the man she thought she knew -- Rule changed the course of true-crime literature with this unforgettable chronicle.   Written by Mat Johnson Art by Warren Pleece Photo cover "[An] engrossing graphic novel, with its smart dialogue and sharp images." - The New York Times Writer Mat Johnson, winner of the prestigious Hurston-Wright Legacy Award for fiction, constructs a fearless graphic novel that is both a page-turning mystery and a disturbing exploration of race and self-image in America, masterfully illustrated with rich period detail by Warren Pleece (THE INVISIBLES, HELLBLAZER). In the early 20th century, when lynchings were commonplace throughout the American South, a few courageous reporters from the North risked their lives to expose these atrocities. They were African-American men who, due to their light skin color, could pass for white. They called this dangerous assignment going "incognegro." Zane Pinchback, a reporter for the New York-based New Holland Herald, is sent to investigate the arrest of his own brother, charged with the brutal murder of a white woman in Mississippi. With a lynch mob already swarming, Zane must stay "incognegro" long enough to uncover the truth behind the murder in order to save his brother - and himself. 136 pg, B&W, mature readers
