SCARCE Pair of Northern Rifles Blackened Shoulder Titles 1903 - 1907.  These do not appear in Colin Owens book but they are in Dr Curson's "Regimental Devices in South Africa 1783-1954" on page 36.(see pic). The Northern Rifles were raised in August 1903 by Lt -Col Carr Glyn in the Transvaal. In 1907 they became the Northern Mounted Rifles and in 1913 they were absorbed into the Pretoria Regiment. What makes these titles very collectable is the makers mark of Dowler& sons on the rear of both titles. Lugs original and intact.

Condition As Per Photos.WORLD WAR ONE BRITISH WAR MEDAL AWARDED TO PTE T PECK SA IRISH  At the outbreak of World War 1 in August 1914 three officers met at the Irish Club in Johannesburg with a view to raising an Irish regiment from among the citizens of Johannesburg and its environs. They were Maj George Twomey, Capt J. Jeoffreys, and a Capt MacDonald. Authority was granted by Defence Headquarters and Lt Col Brennan, VD (Volunteer Decoration), was appointed as Commanding Officer, with Maj Twomey as Recruiting Officer. Recruits were quickly found and the battalion formed up at Booysens Camp, Johannesburg, on 9 September 1914, its establishment consisting of six companies. The Honorary Colonel was Mrs Louis Botha, who was an Irish girl (formerly named Emmett), and the wife of the General. According to Military Archives the date of the formation of the unit is 1 December 1914. This date, however, is disputed and it would appear that the claim to have been established on 9 September 1914 is recognized as valid. The South African Irish Regiment was a unit within 4 South African Infantry Brigade in Col Skinner's Northern Force and embarked from Cape Town on 21 December 1914. The Force landed at Walvis Bay on the morning of 25 December 1914, and was immediately in action. On 26 December 1914 outposts of the South African Irish came into contact, and conflict, with German patrols. Hence, the unit was in action three months after it was raised. On 11 February 1915 the Northern Force came under the command of Gen Louis Botha. PLEASE NO FOREIGN BIDDERS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES !  SHIPPING WITHIN SOUTH AFRICA ONLY !  SOLD AS IS

SAS Savage Wars of Peace - Anthony Kemp - 1994 - Paperback in good, clean and tight condition.  This work, the sequel to Anthony Kemp's definitive "The SAS at War", which dealt with the foundation of the Regiment by David Stirling and its role up to 1945, takes the story forward to the storming of the Iranian Embassy, the attack on the IRA in Gibraltar, and the under-cover Gulf War. Following the Second World War, the SAS became essentially a component of the British Army and took part in colonial campaigns, including those in Malaya, Borneo, South Arabia and Oman. Since 1969, though, elements of the Regiment have been stationed more or less permanently in an under-cover role in Northern Ireland. It was at about that time too that the Regiment became involved in counter terrorist activities elsewhere, including England itself. Since then a cloak of secrecy has descended over all SAS activities, including those in the Falklands and the Gulf War. Intense speculation has been the inevitable result. This book, based on interviews and on more co-operation than the SAS has granted any other writer, tells us the maximum compatible with security of a regiment which has become the most feared and respected of special forces anywhere in the world.

The Paras was a 1983 BBC TV documentary series about British Parachute Regiment recruits of 480 (Training) Platoon undertaking their basic training between January and June 1982.The series was broadcast on BBC1 in November and December 1983. It was later repeated in 1984, with an update on the platoon members' lives in the last episode.Written and presented by Glyn Worsnip, it was shot in the fly-on-the-wall style, giving the viewing public a unique insight to military life. Making of the programme started just prior to the Falklands War.The series was accompanied by a book of the same name written by the principal researcher Frank Hilton. Some of those recruits passing out in 1982 went on to have long and distinguished careers including Dean Ward and Rod Stoner. In addition one of the platoon staff corporals, Al Slater was later killed in Northern Ireland whilst a member of the SAS.
