(This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) Reflections on the Bible contains excerpts from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's letters, meditations, expositions, sermons, lectures, and seminar papers (translated into English by New Testament scholar M. Eugene Boring). This variety provides a spectrum of approaches to Bonhoeffer's thoughts on Scripture and its central role in academic study, sermons, teaching, pastoral care, and the conduct of one's personal life. The topics addressed in this book stretch from Bonhoeffer's thematic study of the historicalcritical method to his study of selected portions of Psalm 119, which Bonhoeffer regarded "as the crown of a theological life." In selecting texts for this book, editor Manfred Weber focused on Bonhoeffer's statements about the Bible and his struggle with those statements-which remain remarkably relevant today for individuals and churches, for Christians and non-Christians. Arranged generally according to the flow of Bonhoeffer's life of faith, this collection is framed by selections from letters he wrote in 1936-nine years before his execution by the Nazis-beginning with "A Grand Liberation" and ending with "The Answer." In "The Answer," Bonhoeffer explains "what it actually means to confess faith in the Bible, the strange place where the strange word of God is heard. Engagement with the Bible involves an intensive seeking and questioning. Without this, the Bible will offer no answer." Format:Paperback Pages:128

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Edmund Burke was the dominant political thinker of the last quarter of the eighteenth century in England. His reputation depends less on his role as a practising politician than on his ability to set contemporary problems within a wider context of political theory. Above all, he commented on change. He tried to teach lessons about how change should be managed, what limits should not be transgressed, and what should be reverently preserved. Burke's generation was much in need of advice on these matters. The Industrial Revolution, the American Revolution, and catastrophically, the French Revolution presented challenges of terrible proportions. They could promise paradise or threaten anarchy. Burke was acutely aware of how high the stakes were. The Reflections on the Revolution in France was a dire warning of the consequences that would follow the mismanagement of change. Paperback. English. Secker & Warburg. 1989. 84pp. Good condition in softcover. This is a book which stems from the author's account of the genesis of his celebrated novel, "The Name of the Rose", but which, like the novel itself, goes far beyond the particular. Eco's investigation of the mechanics of fiction expands into a debate that encompasses, in a small space, the workings of the imagination, the responsibilities of the novelist, and the blend of invention, research, and distilled commonsense that goes to make up the modern novel. Along the way, he touches on bad books, ideal readers, historical form, and the metaphysics of the detective story.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days A collection of Lewis's essays against 'the new morality' - a fine collection representing Lewis at his most brilliant. Published shortly after his death, aiming to make available some of his writings which were not at that time publicly accessible, and to counter the prevailing new morality of the sixties, 'Christian Reflections' gives a robust defence of the Christian Gospel. Now, fifty years later, when Christian communities are, in our own day, struggling to come to terms with a shifting morality, this little volume will be a comforting reminder of the never-changing truths of the faith. As ever, Lewis's clear and eloquent mind gives plenty of food for thought, especially as he aims his intellectual ammunition at the modern myths still so prevalent in our post-modern culture. 'I can understand myself only in the light of inner happenings. It is these that make up the singularity of my life, and with these my autobiography deals' - Carl Gustav Jung. In 1957, four years before his death, Carl Gustav Jung began writing his life story. But what began as an exercise in autobiography soon morphed into an altogether more profound undertaking. The result is an absorbing piece of self-analysis: a frank statement of faith, philosophy and principles from one of the great explorers of the human mind. Covering everything from Sigmund Freud, analytical psychology and Jungian dream interpretation to a forthright discussion of Christianity and the existence of God, these final reflections on an extraordinary life are a fitting coda to the work of Carl Gustav Jung. Our faith is shaped by what we believe. Retired Lutheran pastor, Wanda McNeill, has a faith shaped by her bone-deep belief in the Incarnation, in our identity as children of God, and in the saving message of the Cross. She believes these are not just theological concepts, but can be the lived experience of every Christian. In 20 reflections culled from nearly 30 years of preaching, and arranged by liturgical seasons, she speaks heart to heart to believers to help them understand how they can experience faith in this deeply personal way. About the Author Rev. Wanda McNeill, a graduate of Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Penn., served at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Washington, D.C., for 17 years, where she was also the co-founder of a social justice ministry that offered job-readiness training to ex-offenders and welfare mothers. In addition, she served in several rural congregations until her retirement in 2014. View From City Hall - Reflections On Governing Cape Town (Paperback) Patricia De Lille, Craig Kesson   The City of Cape Town is a place of contrasts, the legacy of apartheid having left a distinct make-up. Yet the challenges confronting the contemporary city are notably aggravated by modern-day factors such as increasing unemployment and poverty.   In this timely work, Mayor of Cape Town Patricia de Lille and Craig Kesson, the city’s Director of Policy and Strategy, confront some of the issues of governance: how can the city help overcome social and physical segregation; how can the government live up to the promises made to South Africans; and how can the city function and heal within these limitations? "I’ve seen firsthand the progress Cape Town has made under Mayor De Lille. Successes in one city often spreads to others, and this book provides a valuable guide for how, with a bit of motivated and dynamic leadership, cities can lead the way on the most important issues of our day.” Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg L.P. and former mayor of New York City   Imprint: Jonathan Ball Publishers Country of origin: South Africa Release date: September 2017 Authors: Patricia De Lille • Craig Kesson Dimensions: 233 x 152 x 18mm (L x W x T) Format: Paperback - Trade Pages: 256 ISBN-13: 978-1-86842-786-4
