By what means did the Commission endeavor to understand South Africa's violent past and promote a spirit of national unity? Did the commission's acclaimed and controversial efforts help South Africans to walk the bridge from apartheid to nonracial democracy? This groundbreaking volume provides an explicit and often startling view of the Truth and reconciliation commission. In the name of understanding the commission's development, work, and findings, it features a rich variety of materials, including many selections from the TRC's archive of testimony and its Final Report that have yet to receive significant public scrutiny. These fundamental documents challenge conventional accounts of the Commission. They also shed light on how the Commission undertook a public process of history-making, attempted to deal with the past in a manner that gave voice to experiences long silenced, endeavoured to expose the violence of apartheid and the excesses of struggle, and demonstrated the political necessity of repairing a crime against humanity. For both citizen and student, this volume affords an opportunity to grapple with the difficult concepts of truth and reconciliation in South Africa and a chance to reflect on why these two simple words have challenged international preconceptions about the power and potential of African politics. Truth & Reconciliation In South Africa: 10 Years On provides a realistic assessment of what a TRC can reasonably accomplish and provides an audit of the response of government and other agencies to the unfinished business of the Commission. This title features an edited transcript of a public symposium chaired by Tim Modise with participation from Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Yasmin Sooka and several participants in the TRC's victim hearings. It also contains articles by leading researchers, activists and government officials tasked with implementing the TRC recommendations. It examines the complexities of translation and interpretation of personal testimonies in TRC sessions. It also reflects on the role of media, art and cultural exponents who grappled with South Africa's past.   Jakaranda Time: An Investigator's View of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission -  Zenzile Khoisan - Photographs by George Hallett - 2001 - Paperback in very good condition - Dust cover: good - Internally: a clean a and tight copy. Investigative journalist Zanzile Khoisan served as one of the investigators at South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This is his insider account of the political machinations before, during and after the hearings. "This investigative diary of stacatto rhythm and urgent disclosure sometimes spins into brilliantly expressed observation. A fascinating read. Both personal and impersonal, it gives the reader in camera insight into the unsung role the investigation team of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission played in providing the critical background to the hearings. Angry and sensitive, poetic and witty, Khoisan is surely a writer in the making." Lindy Wilson, documentary filmmaker.

-Signed by Terry Bell - Many people, both in South Africa and abroad, hoped that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission established in 1996 would uncover the hidden history of South Africa's apartheid past. It is a widely propagated myth that it did so. In fact, most of the thirty-three-year mandate of the Commission was ignored. Behind a facade of time constraints and managerial short comings, some intended investigations never proceeded, others were bungled. Most importantly, no serious examination was made of the system that gave rise to some of the most horrific, racist social engineering of modern times. Unfinished Business pulls back the curtain on the 'political miracle' of the new South Africa to reveal some of the real stories in its past: how the Afrikaner Broederbond operated, the murderous activities of the South African security forces in Transkei, the citation of De Klerk as a defendant in a civil action for murder at exactly the moment he was traveling to Oslo to collect a Nobel peace prize, and many others.Seeking to probe where the Commission failed or feared to tread, this books asks how long South Africa's miracle might be expected to last. Bodies of Truth: Law, Memory, and Emancipation in Post-Apartheid South Africa Bodies of Truth offers an intimate account of how apartheid victims deal with the long-term effects of violence, focusing on the intertwined themes of embodiment, injury, victimhood, and memory. In 2002, victims of apartheid-era violence filed suit against multinational corporations, accusing them of aiding and abetting the security forces of the apartheid regime. While the litigation made its way through the U.S. courts, thousands of victims of gross human rights violations have had to cope with painful memories of violence. They have also confronted an official discourse claiming that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of the 1990s sufficiently addressed past injuries. This book shows victims' attempts to emancipate from their experiences by participating in legal actions, but also by creating new forms of sociality among themselves and in relation to broader South African society. Rita Kesselring's ethnography draws on long-term research with members of the victim support group Khulumani and critical analysis of legal proceedings related to apartheid-era injury. Using juridical intervention as an entry point into the question of subjectivity, Kesselring asks how victimhood is experienced in the everyday for the women and men living on the periphery of Cape Town and in other parts of the country. She argues that the everyday practices of the survivors must be taken up by the state and broader society to allow for inclusive social change in a post-conflict setting. Author: Ann Bernstein With Author's Inscription Publisher: Penguin (2010) ISBN-10: 0143026526 ISBN-13: 9780143026525 Condition: Very Good. The DJ has some light scratches and slight creasing to the edges. There is a small mark on the rear endpapers and the edge of a few of the pages. Else a very good copy. Binding: Hardcover with dust jacket Pages: 397 Dimensions: 24.1 x 16 x 2.7 cm +++ by Ann Bernstein (With Author's Inscription) +++ Ann Bernstein's inspiration for this book came in 1997 when South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission held a week of hearings focused on business and its role during apartheid. In the same week, Nelson Mandela implicitly challenged many of the assumptions of those who attacked companies in South Africa for operating within a racially discriminatory system when he called on SA business to invest in China - the world's largest authoritarian state and human rights abuser. Bernstein posits that business leaders need to stop playing defence and instead stand up for markets, free trade and globalisation. It's time business had the confidence and strategic vision to stop apologising, develop its own public agenda and start propagating the phenomenal benefits of competitive capitalism for the less developed countries of the world. The Case for Business in Developing Economies is a view from developing countries on why corporations should stop appeasing their critics and promote the benefits of capitalism for the Global South.
