It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 24 hours South Africa has an established, vibrant and highly politicized contemporary art scene that is often in dialogue with the deep and recent past. South African Art explores this relationship between past and present, showing contemporary and historic art objects from the earliest human artistic tendencies three million years ago to 20th-century apartheid Resistance Art and the art of post-apartheid transformation. South African Art begins with the first artistic stirrings of our earliest ancestors and the first African kingdoms through to the creation of 3D figurative art and specialised artisans. It then considers the influence of Dutch, British, Malay, Chinese and Indian settlers from the 16th century onwards and the ensuing conflicts, followed by a focus on the British colonial period and the European obsession with the exotic and the objectification of African bodies. A chapter on segregation after the Union of South Africa in 1910 and Resistance Art during the apartheid era of c.1970 to 1989 is followed by a final section looking at South Africa's transformation from an apartheid state to the 'Rainbow Nation', and the country's current artistic optimism. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) South Africa has produced some of the best batsmen in the world, with AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla dominating the recent ICC rankings. Previous teams and generations have included their own legends. But who are the greatest of them all? Following the success of their book Jacques Kallis and 12 Other great South African all rounders, Ali Bacher and David Williams now turn their attention to South Africa¿s top batsmen. The book features early legends such as Herby Taylor and Dudley Nourse; the world-beating Graeme Pollock and Barry Richards, whose careers were cut short by isolation; the unshakeable Gary Kirsten and Jacques Kallis, who built the foundation of the Proteas¿ postisolation success; the big-scoring captain Graeme Smith and his South African-born England counterpart Kevin Pietersen; and the swashbuckling Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers, who dominate the current game. It also considers two players who, but for apartheid, might have been their equals in the Test-match arena. South Africa¿s greatest batsmen provides fascinating insights about each man¿s background and career, his batting technique, and his main achievements at the crease. Based on new interviews, the book will take the reader down memory lane as former and current players reminisce about their most important innings, the bowlers they most feared and the teammates they most respected. Written by cricket legend Ali Bacher and top journalist David Williams, this is a book that no cricket fan can be without. Format:Paperback (Trade paperback, B format) Pages:256

The Law of Succession in South Africa, second edition, introduces LLB students to the general principles of the law of succession within a South African context.  Integrating the common law, statutory law, constitutional perspectives, and the related customary law principles, the text provides thorough and informative coverage of the essential materials in a concise and accessible resource. The content is updated to reflect recent cases and developments such as the Reform of Customary Law of Succession and Regulation of Related Matters Act, 11 of 2009.  The text supports learning and the development of independent academic skills through various pedagogical features which bring an applied, critical and reflective approach to the content. Students will also find useful special features included to encourage independent and critical thinking and to broaden their understanding and perspectives.  An expanded test bank and PowerPoint slide presentation complement the offering, and are available to lecturers to support conceptualisation, enrich teaching and learning, and encourage the development of research skills.  This book is suited as core course material for courses in the law of succession at the undergraduate level of the LLB degree. It may also be a useful resource for post-graduate courses and legal practitioners wishing to clarify new or foundational principles of the field.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 10 working days How do we understand academic freedom today? Does it still have relevance in the face of the managerial and ideological pressures which are reconfiguring higher education institutions? And what about the humanities? In an increasingly imarket-driven world, what do the humanities have to offer society? These two sets of questions provide the guiding threads of related enquiries that make up this hard-hitting and controversial study. Academic Freedom in a Democratic South Africa argues that the principle of supporting and extending open intellectual enquiry is essential to realizing realising the full public value of higher education, and that in this task, the humanities and the forms of argument and analysis that they embody have a crucial role to play. The book examines the troubled history of academic freedom in South Africa starting with key debates raised by the 1987 O'Brien Affair through to post-apartheid government policy where it figures as an inconvenient ideal, that is paid lip service to but is neglected in practice; questions received ideas of institutional culture and managerial authority; and argues for a better understanding of the critical thinking arising from advanced forms of literacy made available by the humanities. Discussion of the place of the humanities in furthering democracy is deepened and extended in a series of interviews with three key figures from the critical humanities: Terry Eagleton talks about the deforming effects of managerial policies in British universities, Edward W. Said argues for the democratising potential of the humanities, and Jakes Gerwel discusses the importance of the humanities in both the anti-apartheid struggle, and for contemporary South Africa. The volume as a whole ends with a consideration of the most recent challenges facing academic freedom and the humanities. Features Summary How do we understand academic freedom today? A History of South Africa by Frank Welsh   ' A remarkable feat of scholarship, fairness and readability, full of lively detail with a freshness of style which brings new life to the narrative ' Anthony Sampson Throughout its turbulent history, South Africa has frequently been the focus of worldwide attention -- usually hostile. Yet prejudice and ignorance about the country are widespread. The evolution of the present-day 'Rainbow Nation' has taken place under conditions of sometimes extreme pressure. Since long before the arrival of the first European settlers in the seventeenth century, the country has been home to a complex and uneasily co-existing blend of races and cultures, and successive waves of immigrants have added to the already volatile mixture. Despite the euphoria which greeted the dismantling of the apartheid system and the election as President of Nelson Mandela in April 1994, South Africa's history, racial mix and recent political upheavals suggest it will not easily free itself from the legacy of its tumultuous past. Newly revised and updated, Frank Welsh's vividly written, even-handed and authoritative history casts new light on many of South Africa's most cherished myths. Like his A History of Hong Kong, it will surely come to be regarded as definitive.

Subtitle: Critique, Theory and Post-apartheid Society Author: Heather Jacklin and Peter Vale Publisher: University Of KwaZulu-Natal Press (2009) ISBN-10: 1869141792 ISBN-13: 9781869141790 Condition: Very Good. The cover has a few light scratches. Else a very good copy. Binding: Softcover Pages: 308 Dimensions: 23.0 x 15.0 x 1.8 cm +++ by Heather Jacklin and Peter Vale +++ As apartheid ended, why did the South African academy shift from critique to subservience? Why have common sense explanations of the social world of South Africans replaced searching questions? Why are conversations on social issues in South Africa controlled by technology, management, and, until their recent collapse, the idea of markets? Why has serious thought in the new South Africa become an indecent activity? These, and other, questions are at the heart of this book, which brings social theory to bear on social practice to disrupt received conceptions and representations of the social in post-apartheid South Africa. This subversive volume seeks to revive the tradition of intellectual argument that marked apartheid's final years. Using critical theoretical perspectives, the contributors offer explanations of narrowly focused, post-apartheid discourses, and imagine different orderings of contemporary South African life. Re-imagining the Social in South Africa revitalizes thinking on 21st-century South Africa by positioning the humanities, especially its critical spirit, at the very center of the national conversation.

Subtitle: On Recent South African Writing Author: M.J. Daymond, J.U. Jacobs and Margaret Lenta Publisher: University Of KwaZulu-Natal Press (1984) ISBN-10: 0869803778 ISBN-13: 9780869803776 Condition: Very Good. Light wear to cover corners. Else an excellent copy. Binding: Softcover Pages: 325 Dimensions: 21.9 x 14.8 x 1.8 cm +++ by MJ Daymond, JU Jacobs and Margaret Lenta +++ Momentum sees writing in South Africa after Soweto '76 as being of two kinds: the artefact novels, plays or poetry; and the manifesto the artist's statement about the shaping power of events in this country on his or her work. Another kind of division is also operative in South African literature: the writings of those who live here and the writings of those who live abroad - our exiles.  Because there are at least these two kinds of divisions in our literature, Momentum takes the shape it does. It combines writers' statements (from home and abroad) about their work with critical discussion of that work. This combination is unique in South African publishing and its effect is to allow the reader to come to an independent understanding of the interactions between forces which shape our writing, the writing itself, and critical response to that writing.

Hardback. English. Clarendon Press. 1991. In good condition. The wicked legal system, one whose laws have been made the instrument of a repugnant moral ideology, has played an important part in recent jurisprudential debate. This factor seems clearly to support the argument of legal positivists, who insist on a distinction between law and morality, and to be an insurmountable obstacle to critics of positivism, who reject that distinction. In evaluating this debate, Hard Cases in Wicked Legal Systems provides a detailed study of judicial interpretations of the apartheid laws of South Africa and a brief study of recent English Judicial decisions, mainly on statutes and executive decisions dealing with matters of state security. Dyzenhaus' study is highlighted by the surprising conclusion that positivism does not produce healthy legal practice. This penetrating study will be of particular interest to jurists and legal philosophers, political theorists, and administrative and constitutional lawyers. An extremely scarce title. First Edition. The book has some minor edging and one mark on first page. Else in good condition and tightly bound.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 24 hours This book celebrates the rich, varied and untold history of investigative journalism in southern Africa and the crucial role it has played in shaping the region over the last 300 years. It tells of the escapades of those who exposed atrocities of the British colonial rulers, the seizure of land from black owners, apartheid death squads, prison conditions, farm labour, government and corporate corruption, environmental travesty and health issues. Young journalists who have previously studied the likes of the Watergate scandal will have access to African journalists who faced huge risks to expose the abuse of power, ranging from the undercover exploits of the legendary ‘Mr Drum', through to the recent #Guptaleaks expos, of which it was said, ‘Seldom have journalists played such a crucial role in bringing a country back from the brink.' The book highlights the long record of accountability journalism in countries such as South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, and the recent surge of such work in others such as Botswana and Malawi. It breaks new ground in stretching the history of this type of journalism decades further back than previously recorded, including largely ignored work such as John Dube's coverage of the Zulu Bambatha Rebellion and Richard Msimang's documentation of the impact of land confiscation in the early 20th century. The book includes an introduction by Anton Harber, editor and professor, and each case study is written up by an expert in the area. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 24 hours The 2017 publication of Betrayal of the Promise, the report that detailed the systematic nature of state capture, marked a key moment in South Africa's most recent struggle for democracy. In the face of growing evidence of corruption and of the weakening of state and democratic institutions, it provided, for the first time, a powerful analysis of events that helped galvanise resistance within the Tripartite Alliance and across civil society. Working often secretly, the authors consolidated, for the first time, large amounts of evidence from a variety of sources. They showed that the Jacob Zuma administration was not simply a criminal network but part of an audacious political project to break the hold of whites and white business on the economy and to create a new class of black industrialists. State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) such as Eskom and Transnet were central to these plans. The report introduced a whole new language to discuss state capture, showing how SOEs were `repurposed', how political power was shifting away from constitutional bodies to `kitchen cabinets', and how a `shadow state' at odds with the country's constitutional framework was being built. Shadow State is an updated version of the original, explosive report that changed South Africa's recent history. The Caliban Shore: The Fate of the Grosvenor Castaways The Grosvenor was one of the finest East Indiamen of her day, but she ran aground on the treacherous coast of south-east Africa. An astonishing number of her crew and passengers, including women and children, reached the shore safely, but the castaways found themselves hundreds of miles from the nearest European outpost - and utterly ignorant of their surroundings and the people among whom they found themselves. Drawing upon much new research, Stephen Taylor pieces together this extraordinary saga, sifting the myths that became attached to The Grosvenor from a reality that is no less gripping. Taking the reader to the heart of what is now the Wild Coast of Pondoland, he reveals the misunderstandings that led to tragedy, tells the story of those who escaped, and unravels the mystery of those who stayed. About the author Stephen Taylor grew up in South Africa, and after moving to Britain worked as a foreign correspondent for The Times in Africa, Asia and Australia. He is the author of several celebrated books on Africa, including The Mighty Nimrod and Livingstone's Tribe: A Journey from Zanzibar to the Cape. The Caliban Shore was called 'a wonderful book' by Paul Theroux and his most recent book, Storm and Conquest, was called 'a triumph... a ripping yarn founded on original research' in the Guardian. Saleem Badat's The Forgotten People: Political Banishment under Apartheid answers many questions about banishment and shines a bright and welcome light on a largely hidden and unknown aspect of our indeed 'brutal history'. It shows how apartheid's political opponents from rural areas were condemned to the living hell of banishment: a weapon used to expel rural opponents to distant and often arid and desolate places for unlimited periods. These rural opponents were plucked from their families and communities and cast, in the late Helen Joseph's words, 'into the most abandoned parts of the country, there to live, perhaps to die, to suffer and starve, or to stretch out a survival by poorly paid labour, if and when they could get it'. They were strangers in strange areas who could not speak the local language, and often had little in common with the locals and even less in common with those under whose surveillance they fell. This is the first study of an important but hitherto neglected group of opponents of apartheid set in a global, historical and comparative perspective. It looks at the reasons why people were banished, their lives in banishment and the efforts of a remarkable group of activists, led by Helen Joseph, to assist them. Indeed, this book originated in a promise made by the author to Helen Joseph, who had undertaken an epic journey in 1962 to visit all those banished across the length and breadth of South Africa. The work is illustrated with stunning photographs by Ernest Cole, Peter Magubane and others. As a child in South Africa, spending summers exploring the wild with his boyhood friends, Lyall Watson came face to face with his first elephant. From that moment on, Watson's fascination grew into a lifelong obsession with understanding the nature and behaviour of this impressive creature, Around he world, the elephant - at once a symbol of spiritual power and physical endurance - has been worshipped as a god and hunted for sport. In this portrait of the elephant, the author draws from scientific research, anthropological studies, and personal experience to document the animal's wide-ranging capabilities to remember and to mourn; and he reminds us of its rich mythic origins, its evolution, and its devastation in recent history. Part meditation on an elusive animal, part evocation of the power of place.

Subtitle: My Life Behind Enemy Lines with Warlords, Fanatics and Not-So-Friendly Fire Author: Aris Roussinos Publisher: Random House UK 2014 ISBN-10: 1780892187 ISBN-13: 9781780892184 Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 314 Dimensions: 23.3 x 15.3 x 2.5 cm +++ by Aris Roussinos +++ Aris Roussinos tells the real stories behind life in a rebel army. The hidden truth about war is how much fun it is. That's because however they begin, whatever their aims, wars are fought by young men. Some fight because they have an unshakable belief in the cause, others fight because war is all they have ever known. And there are those who fight because there's nothing better to do. They fight in burned-out buildings and shelter under thorn trees. They eat their meager rations, and starve for days cut off from supply lines. They smoke forty cigarettes a day and ride to war stoned, listening to Craig David. These are the men, and boys, who fight these wars. Their senses are sharper; they shudder every time they hear a plane pass overhead: they know it's not a video game anymore. The bombs and bullets are terrifyingly real, and the guys they're killing aren't always faceless enemies: sometimes they're friends. For the last three years, award-winning journalist Aris Roussinos embedded himself with rebel groups in the Libyan uprising, the brutal conflict in the South Sudan, and the civil war in Syria, among others. Part travelogue from the world's most dangerous hot-spots, part eyewitness testimony to recent, bloody history, this is the uncensored, unflinching account of the rebel armies and those who fill their ranks.

The 2017 publication of Betrayal of the Promise, the report that detailed the systematic nature of state capture, marked a key moment in South Africa's most recent struggle for democracy. In the face of growing evidence of corruption and of the weakening of state and democratic institutions, it provided, for the first time, a powerful analysis of events that helped galvanise resistance within the Tripartite Alliance and across civil society. The corpse of local teenager Angela Cashell is found on the Tyrone- Donegal border, between the North and South of Ireland, in an area known as the borderlands. Garda Inspector Benedict Devlin heads the investigation: the only clues are a gold ring placed on the girl's finger and an old photograph, left where she died. Then another teenager is murdered, and things become further complicated when Devlin unearths a link between the recent killings and the disappearance of a prostitute twenty-five years earlier a case in which he believes one of his own colleagues is implicated. As a thickening snow storm blurs the border between North and South, Devlin finds the distinction between right and wrong, vengeance and justice, and even police-officer and criminal becoming equally unclear. A dazzling and lyrical debut crime novel, Borderlands marks the beginning of a compelling new series featuring Inspector Benedict Devlin.
