The Alnus genus commonly known as Alder belongs to the birch family Betulaceae. The genus comprises about 30 species of monoecious trees and shrubs, a few reaching a large size, distributed throughout the North Temperate Zone with a few species extending into Central America and the northern Andes. The catkins of some alder species have a degree of edibility, and may be rich in protein. Reported to have a bitter and unpleasant taste, they are more useful for survival purposes.            The wood of certain alder species is often used to smoke various food items, especially salmon and other seafood. Alnus glutinosa is a popular tree of moist to wet soils. Commonly known as Black Alder it is a moderate to fast-growing deciduous tree that usually grows to 12m to 15m in height with a 6m to 12m spread and a 30cm to 45cm trunk but is capable of reaching 24m in height in the woods. Pyramidal when young, Black Alder often has multiple stems, making it ideal for use as a screen or bonsai specimen, the trees eventually becoming more rounded or oval as they mature. The two- to four-inch-wide, dark green, roundish leaves with toothed edges and pale undersides are joined in spring by rather insignificant male and female flowers. Foliage remains green well into autumn. It is the fruits that are most interesting—small, nutlike, 2.5cm "cones" that persist throughout autumn and winter, long after the darkening leaves have fallen. These fruits, along with the attractive, dark brown, furrowed bark and multi-stemmed growth habit, make Black Alder an attractive landscape specimen throughout the winter. The fruits are food for a variety of wildlife.

Wurmbea stricta Seeds Common Names: Vleiblommetjie, Marshflower Wurmbea is a genus is the Colchicaceae family from sub-saharan Africa and Australia. The rootstock is a corm and flowers are star or trumpet-shaped. Scantily known in cultivation, the starry pink-and-white flowers of this easily grown cormous plant really deserve a place in containers, shallow garden ponds and rock garden pockets. Wurmbea stricta is a deciduous, winter-growing geophyte reaching up to 0.6 m high. The subterranean storage organ is a deep-seated, irregularly shaped corm surrounded by dark brown membranous outer tunics, and produces three narrow, very straight, erect or suberect, dark green leaves that resemble knitting needles. Its striking star-shaped flowers are produced alternately along an elongated spike, the tepals varying in colour from pure white to pale pink. Each tepal has a small claw at the base and two prominent, deep pink glands that produce nectar. Vast quantities of seed are produced in attractive erect, narrowly egg-shaped capsules. Wurmbea stricta, together with Wurmbea punctata, differ from most other wurmbea species by having their petals completely separate rather than being joined at the base into a short or long tube. Wurmbea punctata is a smaller plant with white to ddep pink pink flowers and lance-shaped leaves, occurring on stony hillsides and seeps in the Western Cape. Platanus occidentalis Bonsai Seeds Common Names: American sycamore Tree, American Plane Tree or Buttonwood Tree Seeds An American sycamore tree is easily recognized by its mottled exfoliating bark. The bark of all trees has to yield to a growing trunk; in the case of trees such as the Silver Maple and the Shagbark Hickory the process is not hidden, but the Sycamore shows the process of exfoliation more openly than any other tree. The bark of the trunk and larger limbs flakes off in great irregular masses, leaving the surface mottled, and greenish-white, gray and brown. Sometimes the smaller limbs look as if whitewashed. The explanation is found in the rigid texture of the bark tissue, which lacks the elasticity common to the bark of other trees, so it is incapable of stretching to accommodate the growth of the wood underneath and the tree sloughs it off. A sycamore can grow to massive proportions, typically reaching up to 30 to 40 meters high and 1.5 to 2 meters in diameter when grown in deep soils. The largest of the species have been measured to 51 meters, and nearly 4 meters in diameter. Historical specimens over 5 meters thick have been reported. The sycamore is able to endure a big city environment and has been extensively planted as a shade tree. It bears transplanting well and grows rapidly. The bid amount is for 1 Seed We'll supply you with all the germination & care instructions plus a FREE e-book with everything you'll ever need to know about the art of bonsai.

Strelitzia is a genus of five species of perennial plants, indigenous to South Africa. The name Strelitzia was given to honour Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III of England. She was from the house of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A common name of the genus is bird of paradise flower, because of a supposed resemblance of its flowers to the bird of paradise. In South Africa it is commonly known as a crane flower. The flowers are ideal for cut flowers and last up to 20 days in a vase. They can all be grown in large pots or tubs but will require regular feeding and irrigation. There are three tree-like Strelitzia species Strelitzia alba, Strelitzia caudata and Strelitzia nicolai. The other two species Strelitzia reginae and Strelitzia juncea are shrub-like tufted clump-forming species. In Kirstenbosch released a yellow variety of Strelitzia reginae which in was named Mandela’s Gold in honour of Nelson Mandela. Strelitzias are easy plants to grow in the garden. Plants do well in full sun to semi-shade, love a rich loamy soil and plenty of water throughout the year. They respond well to regular feeding with a slow release fertilizer and compost. They are however very tolerant plants and will thrive in most soils and can survive with very little water once established. The plants are also wind resistant and grow well in coastal gardens. Strelitzias are sensitive to cold and would need a sheltered position in areas with frost as the flowers and leaves are often damaged by frost. In very cold climates it is better to grow them in pots that could be moved indoors when freezing temperatures are expected. Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the Natal wild banana, White Bird of Paradise, Wild Banana or Giant Bird of Paradise, are evergreen banana-like plants, related to the well-known crane flower, Strelitzia reginae, that have erect woody, palm like stems reaching a height of 12 m and the clumps formed can spread as far as 4 m. The 1.8 m long leaves are grey-green and arranged like a fan at the top of the stems. Although not related to the true bananas or the wild banana Ensete ventricosum, the leaves and growth habit of Strelitzia nicolai are somewhat similar and probably account for the common name. The inflorescence is composed of a dark blue bract, white sepals and a bluish-purple "tongue". The entire flower can be as much as 18 cm high by 45 cm long and is typically held just above the point where the leaf fan emerges from the stem.

Nivenia is a genus of 9 species placed in the family Iridaceae. Nivenia is a South African endemic genus with most species found in the Western Cape Province. The genus name is a tribute to the Scottish botanist James Niven, one of the first to collect the genus. Nivenia belongs to a group of plants known as the woody irises, which also include two other genera, Klattia and Witsenia. The 13 species in these genera are all evergreen shrubs which characteristically have the woody stems and a woody underground caudex (swollen woody underground organ from which stems arise).           Nivenia corymbosa is a shrublet which grows to a height of 0.5 to 2 m. The stems are erect to inclined, several growing from the base of the plant. The younger stems are 5-6 mm in diameter with the older stems reaching to 30 mm in diameter at the base. The narrow, lanceolate leaves are sword-shaped and are x 8 mm. The inflorescence or corymb is large and has about 120 flowers borne on a terminal cluster. The flowers are usually pale to deep blue and appear from late January to March. Seed should be sown in autumn and treated with smoke seed primer for best results. Sow in a well-drained, acidic soil medium consistent with that used for other fynbos plants.

Leptospermum is a genus of about 80 species of plants in the myrtle family Myrtaceae. Most species are native to Australia, with the greatest diversity in the south of the continent; but one species extends to New Zealand, another to Malaysia, and Leptospermum recurvum is native to Malaysia. They are shrubs or occasionally small trees, reaching 1–8 m tall, rarely up to 20 m, with dense branching.           The leaves are evergreen, alternate, simple, sharp-tipped, and small, in most species not over 1 cm long. The flowers are up to 3 cm diameter, with five white, pink or red petals. The common name tea tree for the Leptospermum species derives from the practice of early Australian settlers who soaked the leaves of several species in boiling water to make an herbal tea rich in ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). It is said that Captain Cook brewed tea of Leptospermum leaves to prevent scurvy among his crews. Leptospermum novae-angliae commonly known as New England Tea Tree is a beautiful shrub that grows 1.8m to 2.4m tall. It is hardy through Zones 8 to 11 and is best grown in full sun. The flowers range from white to pink and are 10mm to 12mm in diameter and appear during mid-spring.

Dasylirion is a genus of 17 species of grassy looking rosette plants in the family Ruscaceae, all native to northern Mexico, with three species also extending into the south-western United States. They are not grasses but are related to the Agaves. As they grow older, the bases of several species develop into a beautiful trunk. When the plants are mature they send out blooms with hundreds of greenish-white bell-shaped flowers on a tall narrow spike coming from the center of the plant. Unlike most Agaves they do not die after blooming. Most Dasylirion species are reasonably resistant to cold and drought.           Dasylirion texanum commonly known as Texan Sotol and Sotol is a monocot flowering plant native to central and southwestern Texas and in Coahuila state of northeastern Mexico, including the Chihuahuan Desert. The grass-like plant is typically smaller than other Dasylirions, with small crowns and trunks usually less than 45cm, with long foliage reaching 90cm to 180cm. Indigenous peoples of the region pit-bake the crowns to dry and pound them into flour in order to make bread. Dasylirion texanum is cultivated in by specialty plant nurseries and available as an ornamental plant for native plant, drought tolerant, natural landscape, and habitat gardens; and for ecological restoration projects.

Aralia or spikenard, is a genus of the family Araliaceae, consisting of 68 accepted species of deciduous or evergreen trees, shrubs, and rhizomatous herbaceous perennials. The genus is native to Asia and the Americas, with most species occurring in mountain woodlands. Aralia plants vary in size, with some herbaceous species only reaching 50cm tall, while some are trees growing to 20m tall. Aralia plants have large bipinnate (doubly compound) leaves clustered at the ends of their stems or branches; in some species the leaves are covered with bristles.           Aralia elata commonly known as Japanese Angelica Tree is a small deciduous tree that bears clusters of cream colored blossoms during summertime. The sprouts are cooked and eaten in some Asian cuisines like Japanese and Korean. It is an upright tree or shrub growing up to 10 m in height, native to eastern Russia, China, Korea, and Japan. It prefers deep loamy soils in partial shade, but will grow in poorer soils and in full sun. The plant is sometimes cultivated, often in a variegated form, for its exotic appearance. The bark is rough and gray with prickles. The leaves are alternate, large, cm long, and double pinnate. The flowers are produced in large umbels in late summer, each flower small and white. The fruit is a small black drupe. Aralia elata is an edible plant and is closely related to the American species Aralia spinosa, with which it is easily confused. In Japan, the young leaf shoots (taranome) are eaten in the spring. They are picked from the end of the branches and are fried in a tempura batter. In Korean cuisine, its shoots called dureup are used for various dishes, such as dureup jeon, that is a variety of jeon (pancake-like dish) made by pan-frying the shoots covered with minced beef and batter.

Podocarpus falcatus  15 seeds  "Outeniqua yellowwood" This fast-growing, majestic yellowwood with its elegant shape is certainly a tree for all seasons and all gardens. It is an excellent container plant and can also be decorated and used as an indoor Christmas tree. This tall, evergreen tree can reach a height of 45 m in nature but luckily never reaching that great height in garden cultivation. The bark is interesting, being smooth and ridged on younger stems and peeling off in flakes on the older trees. The leaves are arranged spirally, with parallel veins and smooth margins. The leaf tip is sharply pointed. Male and female cones occur on different trees. The large, yellow, fleshy fruits take a year to ripen and hang from the branches in clusters. The ripe fruit is edible and very resinous. Remove the fleshy part of the fruit (cone) to expose the seed. This process is very important as the fleshy part contains an inhibitor, which seems to suppress germination. The fresh seed can be sown directly into black nursery bags or into deep seed trays using a mixture of well-rotted compost and washed sand (1:1). The seed must be pushed and bedded into the mixture and covered with a light layer of soil. The mixture must stay moist at all times. Some of the seed may take up to six months to germinate, so be patient. Seedlings can be pricked out at a height of mm and planted into bags or pots. Care must be taken not to damage the taproot as this may slow the initial growth rate of the plant.
