It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days How should we live: how should we care for one another; grow our capabilities to work, to learn, to love and fully realise our potential? This exciting and ambitious book shows how we can re-design the welfare state for this century. The welfare state was revolutionary: it lifted thousands out of poverty, provided decent homes, good education and security. But it is out of kilter now: an elaborate and expensive system of managing needs and risks. Today we face new challenges. Our resources have changed. Hilary Cottam takes us through five 'Experiments' to show us a new design. We start on a Swindon housing estate where families who have spent years revolving within our current welfare systems are supported to design their own way out. We spend time with young people who are helped to make new connections - with radical results. We turn to the question of good health care and then to the world of work and see what happens when people are given different tools to make change. Then we see those over sixty design a new and affordable system of support. At the heart of this way of working is human connection. Upending the current crisis of managing scarcity, we see instead that our capacities for the relationships that can make the changes are abundant. We must work with individuals, families and communities to grow the core capabilities we all need to flourish. Radical Help describes the principles behind the approach, the design process that makes the work possible and the challenges of transition. It is bold - and above all, practical. It is not a book of dreams. It is about concrete new ways of organising that already have been developing across Britain. Radical Help creates a new vision and a radically different approach that can take care of us once more, from cradle to grave. This book teaches that endurance is improved not by riding longer distances, but by reducing riding time and adding heavy strength training. Traditionally cyclists and endurance athletes have avoided strength training, afraid that the extra muscle weight will slowthem down, but coauthors Roy Wallack and Jacques DeVore show that exactly the opposite is true. The maximum overload program uses weightlifting to create sustainable power and improve speed while cutting training time in half and eliminating the dreaded deterioration during the second half of a ride. A40-minute Maximum Overload workout, done once or twice a week, can replace a long day in the saddle and lead to even better results. The comprehensive program includes unique takes on diet, interval training, hard and easy training, and sustainable power. Backed by the most trusted authority in the sport, Bicycling Maximum Overload for Cyclists will appeal to cyclists and triathletes of all levels looking to improve their performance and achieve better overall fitness and long-term health. For all curious readers, a lively introduction to radical ideas and discoveries that are transforming our knowledge of the universe This book provides a tour of the "greatest hits" of cosmological discoveries-the ideas that reshaped our universe over the past century. The cosmos, once understood as a stagnant place, filled with the ordinary, is now a universe that is expanding at an accelerating pace, propelled by dark energy and structured by dark matter. Priyamvada Natarajan, our guide to these ideas, is someone at the forefront of the research-an astrophysicist who literally creates maps of invisible matter in the universe. She not only explains for a wide audience the science behind these essential ideas but also provides an understanding of how radical scientific theories gain acceptance. The formation and growth of black holes, dark matter halos, the accelerating expansion of the universe, the echo of the big bang, the discovery of exoplanets, and the possibility of other universes-these are some of the puzzling cosmological topics of the early twenty-first century. Natarajan discusses why the acceptance of new ideas about the universe and our place in it has never been linear and always contested even within the scientific community. And she affirms that, shifting and incomplete as science always must be, it offers the best path we have toward making sense of our wondrous, mysterious universe. Format:Hardback

Book actually looks new and unread to me.  >>>    Calderisi shows that Africa has steadily lost markets by its own mismanagement; that corrupt, dictatorial regimes have hobbled agriculture, enterprise and foreign investment; that African family values and fatalism are more destructive than tribalism; and that African leaders prey intentionally on Western guilt. Calderisi exposes the shortcomings and indulgences of foreign aid and debt relief, and proposes his own radical solutions. Drawing on many years of first hand experience, "The Trouble with Africa" highlights issues which have been ignored by Africa's leaders but have long worried ordinary Africans, diplomats, academics, business leaders, aid workers, volunteers and missionaries. It ripples with stories which only someone who has talked directly to African farmers - and heads of state - could recount..   *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Recent achievements in hardware and software development, such as multi-core CPUs and DRAM capacities of multiple terabytes per server, enabled the introduction of a revolutionary technology: in-memory data management. This technology supports the flexible and extremely fast analysis of massive amounts of enterprise data. Professor Hasso Plattner and his research group at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, Germany, have been investigating and teaching the corresponding concepts and their adoption in the software industry for years. This book is based on the first online course on the openHPI e-learning platform, which was launched in autumn 2012 with more than 13,000 learners. The book is designed for students of computer science, software engineering, and IT related subjects. However, it addresses business experts, decision makers, software developers, technology experts, and IT analysts alike. Plattner and his group focus on exploring the inner mechanics of a column-oriented dictionary-encoded in-memory database. Covered topics include - amongst others - physical data storage and access, basic database operators, compression mechanisms, and parallel join algorithms. Beyond that, implications for future enterprise applications and their development are discussed. Readers are lead to understand the radical differences and advantages of the new technology over traditional row-oriented disk-based databases. Features Summary This book, based on the first public course on the openHPI e-learning platform, reviews radical differences and advantages to traditional row-oriented disk-based databases for OLAP and OLTP that result in the spectacular performance of in-memory technology.. 1978 printing.  Soft cover, 469 pages. Very good condition. Under 1kg. “One of the first histories to treat non-whites as active self conscious protagonists in twentieth-century South African affairs rather than as a dark acquiescent host before which the really important story of white South Africa unfolds.  The new edition has been corrected and eight new chapters extend the coverage to the end of 1963.  It is an important addition to the literature about South Africa.”— The Historian Eddie Roux, one of the early pioneers of radical non-racial activism in colonial South Africa has written this wonderful book which blends historical facts with empathy for his subject. He locates the struggle for freedom in South Africa within the broader context of the struggle for radical change. The early attempts at drawing a non-racial perspective, the internal battles of the Communist Party of South Africa as it was grappling with articulating a theory of class struggle appropriate to South Africa...The book is truly a tribute to the enduring spirit of the fight for freedom in South Africa.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Three Funerals and a Wedding follows the story of four businesses undergoing radical change and shows how they succeeded or failed. When you introduce new technology into a business it is obvious, or should be, that you are putting in a place a new system. But the same is true whenever you change the organisational structure, put in place a new incentive scheme, acquire or merge with another business, or sometimes make what appears to be the simplest adjustment to a minor process. The impact of this change can be wide-ranging and completely unexpected, and unless the new system is explicitly designed to produce precisely the results you want, you will, with 100% certainty, get precisely the ones you don't, with profound or even fatal consequences for the organisation concerned. These stories are of four business that faced this challenge - Laura Ashley, The Burton Group, Dixons and the Compass Group. What they did and what the outcome was is explored within the book. They are still all around today, albeit in different forms; but in some cases, they very nearly weren't. The stories are based on the author's personal experiences at the time and reflections since, but they are presented not merely as uncorroborated anecdotes - they include insights from other people involved, documented evidence from the time and since, and in all cases are laid out with clarity. They all take the same form: the story as it appeared at the same time; a discussion of the consequences and of the wider context; and finally, lessons and conclusions which can be drawn from the experience. Bush and George W. Bush that explores their relationship as presidents and as father and son--the first major biographical treatment of these two consequential presidents and figures in American history. In 2016 the Republican base revolted against the GOP establishment that has become synonymous with the Bush name, choosing instead a political neophyte and anti-establishment outsider as the standard bearer of their party. Donald Trump's election marked the end not only of a presidential dynasty, but a rejection of the Republican principles and traditions the Bushes have long championed. Despite the Republicans' surprise victory in 2016, behind closed doors the party remains divided between traditional conservatives, populists, and radical ideologues, and faces an uncertain future. As presidential historian Mark K. Updegrove argues, Bush 41 and 43 are in effect, the "last Republicans."In this balanced, illuminating book, Updegrove tells the story of the Bushes' relationship from the birth of George W. through their post-presidential years and Jeb Bush's failed candidacy. Drawing on exclusive access and interviews with both presidents and the key people in their lives, Updegrove reveals the Bushes' views on the current state of the nation and the GOP, and how the party they both led and helped build is undergoing a radical transformation. At last, the famously circumspect Bushes offer unvarnished observations and revelations on everything from George W. Bush's youthful indiscretions to the influence and perspectives they had on each other's administration to their views on Donald Trump--and how they each voted in the 2016 election.A candid and often surprising portrait of two men, The Last Republicans is also an elegy for the party of Reagan and Bush--and for the many thoughtful and prudent individuals who made up the "establishment," and are conspicuously lacking in today's GOP.The Last Republicans contains 16 pages of black-and-white photographs. FUGITIVE. DUELLIST. RADICAL. AND KILLER. ON 8 December 1854, Emmanuel Barthelemy visited 73 Warren Street in the heart of radical London for the very last time. Within half an hour, two men were dead. The newspapers of Victorian England were soon in a frenzy. Who was this foreigner come to British shores to slay two upstanding subjects? But Barthelemy was no ordinary criminal... Marc Mulholland reveals the true story of one of nineteenth-century London's most notorious murderers and revolutionaries. Following in Barthelemy's footsteps, he leads us from the barricades of the French capital to the English fireside of Karl Marx, and the dangling noose of London's Newgate prison, shining a light into a dark underworld of conspiracy, rebellion and fatal idealism. The Murderer of Warren Street is a thrilling portrait of a troubled man in troubled times - full of resonance for our own terrorised age. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) Current economic growth strategies are rapidly depleting the natural resources and eco-system services that we depend on. As many developing countries strive to eradicate poverty via economic growth, they are all encountering the consequences of global warming and dwindling levels of cheap oil, productive soils, metals, clean water supplies and forest products. If the fast-developing large-scale countries (China, India, Brazil) and small-scale countries (South Africa, Mexico, Venezuela, Poland) want to develop in the same way and to the same level as currently developed economies, they will simply be unable to find the natural resources they require to make this happen. For these developing countries, very different solutions are required. In addition, the world's population is expected to grow by three billion by 2050 and most of these people will be living in cities in Africa and Asia. Put all this together and it is clear that some radical changes are on the way. Just transitions provides a comprehensive overview of these global challenges from the perspective of a southern, developing country. Informed by the extremely difficult task of reconciling the need to eradicate poverty with the need to rebuild our eco-system services and natural resources, this book provides us with a way of thinking about the global challenges we face and the kinds of solutions that are emerging, in particular in developing economies in the Global South. To this end, the literature and case studies the book draws on are mainly from developing country contexts, although the book discusses these and the South African challenges as part of a set of global trends. None of the recent publications on sustainable development in Africa deal with eco-system services and natural resources. This is the first book that integrates development thinking and ecological concerns. What also makes the book unique is that it is not confined to a particular field of study or discipline. The conceptual language used to tell this story is drawn from complexity theory. The authors argue that complexity theory opens up the space that is needed to develop a more trans-disciplinary understanding of a set of challenges that cannot be grasped if we remain locked into traditional disciplinary modes of thinking and they thus introduce a range of topics that are rarely discussed together in a single text. There is an obvious need for a book on sustainable development that is informed primarily by the concerns, institutional settings, literatures and dynamics that prevail in the least-developed and middle-developing economies, with special reference to Africa. This book is it. Format:paperback Pages:360

Hardback. English. Nation Books. 2007. In good condition. What is the real nature of Hamas? Since their astonishing victory in the 2006 Palestinian elections, this has become the most hotly-contested question in the Middle East. How do they really operate? How 'Islamic' are they? What personalities lie beneath the black-and-green uniforms? In this explosive book, Palestinian-born journalist Zaki Chehab draws on his unique insider sources to tell the story of this radical movement as it has never been told before. He shows how Hamas developed with the implicit encouragement of the Israelis (they bought their first weapons cache from the Shin Bet, Israel's domestic security agency), who wanted to weaken Fatah. He uncovers the extent of the Israeli intelligence services' penetration of the organisation, even at the highest levels. Interviewing key figures, he offers completely new insights in to Hamas. He reveals for the first timehow they prepare their 'martyrs' for suicide bombing attacks. He investigates their relationship with other groups, such as Hezbollah and Al Qaeda. The picture which emerges is of a political leadership driven above all else by a desire for power. This authoritative book is essential reading for anyone who cares about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the future of the Middle East.

Excellent hardcover in wrapper.   >>>>    With over one million novels in print,  New York Times  best-selling author Joel C. Rosenberg has been called “eerily prophetic” and a “modern Nostradamus” for his uncanny ability to write political thrillers that come true. In his first  nonfiction  book, this evangelical Christian from an Orthodox Jewish heritage takes readers on an unforgettable journey through prophecy and current events into the future of Iraq after Saddam, Russia after Communism, Israel after Arafat, and Christianity after radical Islam. You won't want to miss Joel's exclusive interviews with Israeli, Palestinian, and Russian leaders, and previously classified CIA and White House documents. Similar to the approach Joel takes in his novels, his desire is to draw readers into stories, anecdotes, and predictions in a way that builds confidence that allows Joel to share his faith in Jesus Christ and the reliability of Scripture as a guide to understanding the past and the future.  Drawing on his experience in Washington, his own exclusive interviews with world leaders, and his astute political acumen, Joel makes sense of the events surrounding the Middle East. He connects information in a way that will make you understand and really care about the world's most important events and how they impact your life—from gas prices to your bank account.    *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional books – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

In Landscapes Berger allows us to see the evolution of his own way of seeing. He explores the relationship between creativity and politics and the revolutionary potential of art through a series of different forms. As always, in this book, Berger pushes at the limits of art writing, demonstrating beautifully how his painter's eyes lead him to refer to himself only as a storyteller. A landscape is, to John Berger, like a portrait, an animating, liberating metaphor rather than a rigid definition. Landscapes offers a tour of the history of art, but not as you know it. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) Margaret Thatcher is one of the most iconic politicians of the twentieth century. With the possible exception of Winston Churchill, no other Prime Minister has had such an impact on modern British history. Like it or not, her radical social and economic policies have made Britain the country it is today. Without Margaret Thatcher there could have been no New Labour, no Tony Blair and no David Cameron. Now Robin Harris, for many years Thatcher's speechwriter, trusted adviser and the draftsman of two volumes of her autobiography, has written the defining book about this indomitable woman. He tells her extraordinary life story, from humble beginnings above her father's grocer's shop in Grantham, her early days as one of the first women in Westminster who became known as 'Thatcher milk-snatcher' during her days in the Ministry for Education and then as Prime Minister. We follow her through the 'Winter of Discontent', the tribulations of the miners' strike and the Falklands War. And Harris writes a stunning account of her exit from power and tells of her life after number 10. Format:Hardback Pages:512

(This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) The thought of Emmanuel Levinas is of increasing importance for those working in the diverse fields of phenomenology and continental philosophy, French studies, Jewish studies, ethics, politics and religious studies. In this book, Nigel Zimmermann gives proper attention to the 'incarnate' aspect of the 'other' in Levinas' work, providing a theological reading that explores the basic strands of Levinas' thinking regarding the concrete nature of human living. Human communities, in which politics inevitably plays a crucial role, may learn much from the theological shape of Levinas' philosophy. In all his writings, Levinas cannot be understood apart from his roles as a Talmudic commentator and as a radical thinker who suffered personally under the shadow of the Holocaust. This is evident in the case of an ideal of childhood innocence in rapid decay in recent decades. So claims Down with Childhood, as it takes in psychedelia's preoccupation with rebirth and inner-children, the fascination with juvenilia amidst an ebbing UK rave scene and dozens of nursery rhyme hip-hop choruses spawned by a hit Jay-Z tune.As it examines the often complex sets of meanings to which the occasional presence of children in pop songs attests, the book pauses at Musical Youth's 'Pass the Dutchie' and other one-hit teen wonders, the career paths of child stars including Michael Jackson and Britney Spears, radical experiments in free jazz, and Black Panther influenced children's soul groups. In the process, a novel argument begins to emerge relating the often remarked crisis of childhood to changing experiences of work and play and ultimately, to an ongoing capitalist crisis that underlies them.
