"The best kind of nonfiction: marvelously reported, fluidly written, and a remarkable story...As meticulous and brilliant as it is compulsively readable." --Karen Abbott, author of "Sin in the Second City" At the height of World War II, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was home to 75,000 residents, and consumed more electricity than New York City, yet it was shrouded in such secrecy that it did not appear on any map. Thousands of civilians, many of them young women from small towns across the U.S., were recruited to this secret city, enticed by the promise of solid wages and war-ending work. What were they actually "doing" there? Very few knew. The purpose of this mysterious government project was kept a secret from the outside world and from the majority of the residents themselves. Some wondered why, despite the constant work and round-the-clock activity in this makeshift town, did no tangible product of any kind ever seem to leave its guarded gates? The women who kept this town running would find out at the end of the war, when Oak Ridge's secret was revealed and changed the world forever. Drawing from the voices and experiences of the women who lived and worked in Oak Ridge, "The Girls of Atomic City" rescues a remarkable, forgotten chapter of World War II from obscurity. Denise Kiernan captures the spirit of the times through these women: their pluck, their desire to contribute, and their enduring courage. "A phenomenal story," and "Publishers Weekly" called it an "intimate and revealing glimpse into one of the most important scientific developments in history." "Kiernan has amassed a deep reservoir of intimate details of what life was like for women living in the secret city...Rosie, it turns out, did much more than drive rivets."  LOOLEKOP The story of Palabora Mining Company by Brian Pottinger Jonathan Ball Publishers 1990. H/C with D/J, 154 pages. Gift inscription to ffep. O/A in very good condition. Close to the confluence of the Selati and Olifants River in the Eastern Transvaal bushveld of South Africa lies Phalaborwa - home to one of the world's great copper mines. For hundreds of years local tribesmen had used simple techniques to wrest small quantities of iron and copper from the slopes of the hillock known as Loolekop. Only in the early part of this century did another brood of tough and visionary prospectors come to vaguely comprehend the enormous mineral wealth locked in the subterranean volcanic pipes beneath the koppie. This book traces the establishment, growth and triumph of the Palabora Mining Company at Loolekop. It is an account of hardships, roller-coasting fortunes and unshakable faith. It tells of the characters and events which transformed a remote rural village into a bustling town. It is also the tale of two very different mining giants. Rio Tinto of Britain and Newmont of the US, and their sometimes acrimonious collaboration in one of the most testing and yet successful mining ventures in South African history. Loolekop is no more: replaced by a vast crater in the ground. From its shadow, however, has grown over the last quarter of a century a thriving multi-racial community bound by the challenge and promise of this unique and world-renowned operation. This is their story. Postage R55.00

I was not to carry any identification, and would have to leave my cell phone, audio recorder, watch, and purse at my hotel... For her whole life, Souad Mekhennet, a reporter for the Washington Post who was born and educated in Germany, has had to balance the two sides of her upbringing - Muslim and Western. She has also sought to provide a mediating voice between these cultures, which too often misunderstand each other. In this compelling and evocative memoir, we accompany Mekhennet as she journeys behind the lines of jihad, starting in the German neighbourhoods where the 9/11 plotters were radicalised and the Iraqi neighbourhoods where Sunnis and Shia turned against one another, and culminating on the Turkish/Syrian border region where ISIS is a daily presence. In her travels across the Middle East and North Africa, she documents her chilling run-ins with various intelligence services and shows why the Arab Spring never lived up to its promise. She then returns to Europe, first in London, where she uncovers the identity of the notorious ISIS executioner 'Jihadi John', and then in France, Belgium and her native Germany, where terror has come to the heart of Western civilisation. Mekhennet's background has given her unique access to some of the world's most wanted men, who generally refuse to speak to Western journalists. She is not afraid to face personal danger to reach out to individuals in the inner circles of Al Qaeda, the Taliban, ISIS and their affiliates; when she is told to come alone to an interview, she never knows what awaits at her destination. Souad Mekhennet is an ideal guide to introduce us to the human beings behind the ominous headlines, as she shares her transformative journey with us. Hers is a story you will not soon forget. Features Summary Souad Mekhennet is a German-born Moroccan Muslim, a Washington Post correspondent, still based in Germany. This is her brave and powerful memoir. "An intricate story about war, family, secrets and, yes, wood... The death of his parents, when he was three years old, has always been shrouded in mystery - he has never been told how or where it took place and has only a distant memory of his mother. One day a coffin is delivered for his grandfather long before his death - a meticulous, beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Perhaps Einar is not dead after all.  1988 / Hardcover / Good condition “This infectiously readable memoir by the most colorful and controversial Navy Secretary in memory provides the inside story of the origins and battles at home and abroad in building a 600-ship Navy. Young, bright, and ambitious, John Lehman came to office refusing to be just another figurehead. For the six years he served in the Reagan administration, he helped forge an aggressive strategy for achieving maritime supremacy and for rebuilding the U.S. Navy. In this bestselling personal account of those years between 1981 and 1987, he speaks with candor and authority about the ills of the military establishment and the struggles and frustrations he encountered. Lehman reveals instances of political intrigue, including his dramatic Oval Office confrontation with Admiral Rickover at the time of the admiral's firing in 1982 and battles within the Pentagon and Congress. His explanation of the administration's new naval strategy has been called the most comprehensive and lucid ever written, and his descriptions of the Navy in combat over Libya, Lebanon, and Grenada are packed with fascinating details that only an insider could know. The bold insights he presents of a critical turning point in the Cold War will continue to inform and, with the addition of new material to this paperback edition, promise to renewed discussion of the role of the U.S. Navy then and into the future.”

1st Edition 2001.. The Winds of Havoc - A Memoir of Adventure and Destruction in Deepest Africa (Hardcover) Adelino Serras Pires Book is in fair condition. Pages clean clear & bright. Binding not very good and can be easily restored. Owners name to front page. Hardcover The winds of Havoc: a memoir of adventure and destruction in deepest Africa by Adelino Serras Pires as told to Fiona Claire Capstick. An account of big game hunting, throughout Africa, but most often in Mozambique and some other countries, at a time there was political & military upheaval. New York, St. Martin’s Press, 2001.  First   edition. 8vo. Pp. xv,(1,1),265, black / white photo-plates, portraits, map. Previous owner’s signature inside front cover. When eight-year-old Adelino Serras Pires first arrived on a boat from Portugal in 1936, Mozambique was a tropical paradise, where native tribes and Portuguese colonists lived in harmony, and vast jungles held the promise of endless excitement. A few months into Adelino's new life, his father took him along on a successful hunt for maneating lions that had been terrorizing the countryside. From that point on, Adelino's destiny was sealed: He would spend his days in the African bush, hunting for a living, and living for adventure. After a childhood wrought with thrilling episodes, Adelino became a major safari organizer with a client list comprised of African royalty, European dignitaries and wealthy Americans alike. Soon, though, tribes across the continent began to rebel against European control. In Mozambique, the Frelimo party, bent on ousting the Portuguese colonists, launched guerilla attacks throughout the land. Such attacks resulted in the violent death and injuries of several safari clients, and Adelino was forced to pack up his operations. What follows is a frightening look at a continent under siege. As Adelino moved throughout sub-Saharan Africa-- each time resuming his life's ambition-- he repeatedly witnessed the violence and horror of civil war. Like a hunter stalking its prey, it was only a matter of time before the forces of revolution brought him down, too. That day came when Adelino, his son, his nephew, and a fellow hunter were abducted in Tanzania and turned over to the secret police in now-- Frelimo-controlled Mozambique. In hair-raising detail, Adelino recounts months of torture and interrogation in a Mozambique prison, which almost cost him his life, and the traitorous circumstances that landed him there. "The Winds of Havoc" is the story of Adelino's steady disillusionment, as the beauty of Africa slowly gave way to political turmoil and corruption. But more than that, it's a moving portrait of a life and time that are now gone forever.

Book in good condition but dustcover has creases and a bit worn around spine.  By Ned Middleton TOP 500 REVIEWER on May 2, 2007 If had to recommend two books to anyone seeking an excellent read which will make them laugh, I would look no further than "The Moon's a Balloon" and "Bring on the Empty Horses!" These are two of the funniest and most satisfying books I have ever read. There were several different aspects to David Niven's life. Having arrived in Hollywood, he was required to learn his trade in "B" movies before being allowed to enter the big time from where he eventually won an Oscar. Unlike some of the greats of Hollywood, he also put his entire acting career on hold whilst he served as a British officer in a fighting unit throughout WW2. "The Moon's a Balloon" recounts the first half of his life's story in which we meet some of the rich and famous stars of that Hollywood of yester-year and learn a little about each of these people and their various relationships. In "Bring on the Empty Horses" Niven confirms his credentials as an ingenious writer as he pours his own brand of humour onto each and every encounter he describes in this sequel. Not once does he stoop to the level of cheap gossip, not once does attack the person he is describing. Instead, we have a first hand account of that golden age of Hollywood written by a master wordsmith who has also mastered the art of humour. Only a writer who had also been a central part of that glorious cast of characters and real-life people could possibly have produced this work. I promise, you will not want either book to end - they really are so enjoyable. There is something about the way in which David Niven writes about other people you just know they would approve of what he has said. As an actor, David Niven was the good guy, the dashing hero, the sort of character to whom we would all wish to aspire. As an author, he writes about his fellow personalities from the Hollywood of yester-year with whom he worked and came into contact without exposing their shortcomings. Instead, he simply makes us laugh and, as I say, those of whom he writes would, therefore, approve. If you are a fan of the olden days, the golden days of Hollywood, you will enjoy these two books. If you simply want a damned good read, you will enjoy them even more. Truth is, I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying either product. What more can I say except I know you will not be disappointed.
