Described by Thom Gunn as `an ideal edition', this first volume of William Carlos Williams' Collected Poems is a vivid account of his formation as a poet, his time in Europe, and his interactions with the major players of Modernism (he never quite appreciated that he was one of them). The poems are printed in the order of original publication, starting with The Tempers (1913) and ending with Poems 1936-1939. Williams remains one of the most popular American poets of all time, Whitman's heir but with a voice wholly unlike Whitman's: provincial, particular, never quite settled. His material is the stuff of daily life, though he takes big risks of theme: `the urgent insurgent now' that he lives and celebrates becomes history; it can generate energy even from the past. Features Summary The first of the monumental, definitive two-volume edition of Williams's Collected Poems for the twenty-first century reader. Author William Carlos Williams (Author), Walton Litz (Editor), Christopher McGowan (Editor) Publisher Carcanet Classics Release date 20180913 Pages 608 ISBN 1-78410-671-2 ISBN 13 978-1-78410-671-3

Gathering thirty years and seven books, this volume compiles Dove's reflections on adolescence in The Yellow House on the Corner and her irreverent musings in Museum. She sets the moving love story of Thomas and Beulah against the backdrop of war, industrialisation and the civil right struggles. For the first time, all five major writings of Pope Francis--his encyclicals, bulls, and apostolic exhortationsare gathered into one volume. Pope Francis--the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church--was elected on March 13, 2013. Since then, he has been the most influential religious leader in the world, drawing praise and admiration from people of all faiths. The impact of his writings has been felt not just in the Catholic Church for which they were intended but throughout the world. Each of the five works collected in The Complete Encyclicals, Bulls, and Apostolic Exhortations is a book unto itself, so this volume is one that can be cherished, read, and reread by all Catholics and devotees of Pope Francis for many years to come. Volume 1 includes: Lumen Fidei, June 29, 2013: The Light of Faith is an encyclical on the centrality of faith, the relationship between reason and faith, the Church's role in the transmission of faith, and how faith results in redeeming the world. Evangelii Gaudium, Nov. 24, 2013: The apostolic exhortation The Joy of the Gospel has been called Pope Francis's manifesto. It challenges all Christians to approach evangelization anew and overcome complacency in order to fulfill Christ's great mission. Misericordiae Vultus, April 11, 2015: In The Face of Mercy, the papal bull for the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2015, the pope urges Catholics, "We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy." Laudato Si', May 24, 2015: Praise Be to You: On Care for Our Common Home is the landmark encyclical in which Pope Francis issued a call to the entire Church--and the world--on climate change, human responsibility, the role of faith in how we live among God's entire creation, and the future of the planet. Amoris laetitia, March 19, 2016: Love in the Family is an exhortation published after the Synods on the Family. In it, Pope Francis ranges in his quotations and examples from St. Thomas Aquinas and Martin Luther King Jr. to the film Babette's Feast. Review Pope Francis is a revolutionary. The revolution he proposes, however, is not a matter of economic or political prescription, but a revolution in the self-understanding of the Catholic Church: a re-energizing return to the pentecostal fervor and evangelical passion from which the church was born two millennia ago, and a summons to mission that accelerates the great historical transition from institutional-maintenance Catholicism to the Church of the New Evangelization. George Weigel Pope Francis s groundbreaking new documentAmoris Laetitia(The Joy of Love)asks the Church to meet people where they are, to consider the complexities of people s lives, and to respect people s consciences when it comes to moral decisions. The apostolic exhortation is mainly a document that reflects on family life and encourages families. But it is also the pope s reminder that the Church should avoid simply judging people and imposing rules on them without considering their struggles. Rev. James Martin, S.J. Laudato Si'is an earthquake.... (It) seems destined to go down as a major turning point, the moment when environmentalism claimed pride of place on par with the dignity of human life and economic justice as a cornerstone of Catholic social teaching. It also immediately makes the Catholic Church arguably the leading moral voice in the press to combat global warming and the consequences of climate change." John L. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days "Sarah Lindsay is blessed with the sort of X-ray vision a philosopher would kill for."-"The New York Times Book Review" Quirky, macabre, vivid, and fascinating, Sarah Lindsay's poetry in "Twigs and Knucklebones "melds science and art with astonishing facts that might just be true: spadefoot toads singing till their throats bleed, an explorer tumbling into an Antarctic crevasse and swinging from his tether like a pendulum. Many of Lindsay's poems occur "in extremis," and the situations are often severe and surreal: the futuristic "Valhalla Burn Unit on the Moon Callisto" or a bog person discovered in Eske's Field. These characters often span-in the space of a poem-various times, cultures, and contexts. Lindsay also creates her own fictional kingdom and peoples it with outlandish characters, including jerboas, megalomaniac archaeologists, an adjunct professor, goatherds, farmers, and the god Nummis, who is depicted with a "hawk on his head, fish in one hand, horned ibex at either side." "We prod and whisk and deduce what we can from marks in clay, from the trace of a wall. But the way the king tossed and caught his adoring daughters, the foolish songs he improvised for his wife, and his furry voice- these have been safely forgotten." Sarah Lindsay is the author of two previous books of poems. Her debut volume was a finalist for the National Book Award. She lives in North Carolina. Tracked postage is R50.00.  "Elsabe Einhorn, a former lecturer in UCT French studies section, recently donated a copy of her latest book, The William of Orange Epics, aka The Heroic Deeds of Count William of Orange and His Kin, to UCT Libraries.  The work, some 20 years in the making, is Einhorn's translation into vivid modern English of the 17 most important epic poems from the William Cycle, a series that recounts the chivalric tales of medieval knight, Count William of Orange. The original Old French poems date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. While there have been selective translations of many of the William epics, Einhorn's new text is thought to be the only one to include such a substantial range in one volume."

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days For thirty years, the late Thomas McGrath labored over his narrative epic poem, Letter to an Imaginary Friend, first publishing Part One in 1963 and finishing with Part Four in 1985. Now, Dale Jacobson, his colleague, has prepared an authoritative text of the whole poem working from McGrath's archival notes, making available for the first time in a single volume the greatest epic poem of our time. By turns modern and Homeric, McGrath's semi-autobiographical Letter explores American history, politics, and mythology, guided by the Blue Star Kachina of Hopi mythology as we move toward the poem's conclusion in the American heartland on Christmas Eve, criss-crossing the landscape in what Library Journal has called "a tremendous odyssey of sense and spirit". This is an original 470 year old hand coloured print from the first edition of Conrad Gessner's bird book published at Zurich by Christoffel Froschower in 1557. Gessner's bird book was part of a four volume set known as the Historiae Animalium or "Histories of Animals" appearing from 1551-1558. It was an encyclopedic work of an inventory of Renaissance zoology. Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) was a Swiss naturalist and bibliographer. It is the first modern zoological work that attempts to describe all known animals, and the first bibliography of natural history writings. Historiae Animalium appeared in four volumes (quadrupeds, birds, fishes) from 1551-1558. Volume 1 was an illustrated work on live-bearing four-footed animals, Volume 2 on egg-laying quadrupeds, Volume three on birds and Volume four on fish and other aquatic animals. A condensed popular version translated into German and known as Gessner's Thierbuch or "animal book" was published in Zurich in 1563. Gessner was a protestant and his work was added to the Roman Catholic Church's list of prohibited books soon after publication. Pope Paul IV strongly believed that the religious convictions of an author contaminated all his writings. Though it is a large work Gessner sought to distinguish facts from myth, his encyclopedic work also included mythical creatures and imaginary beasts, intermixed with the strange newly discovered animals from the East Indies, those of the far north and animals brought back from the New World. Gessner made many of the illustrations for this work himself but acknowledges that he also sought the help of other artists, one being Lucas Schan from Strasbourg. The layout of the work is in the traditional style of the emblem book where images are accompanied by explanatory text and the names of animals are given in different languages. Gessner was ennobled in 1564 and in many later sources he is referred to as Conrad Von Gessner. He did not live long as a nobleman though as he died from the plague scarcely a year later. Patrons of the period had the option of purchasing either uncoloured copies for 2 Guilders or coloured copies for 3 Guilders. If the order was for a coloured copy the book was then sent to specialist shops for this purpose. This leaf is from an incomplete coloured copy. The leaf is in great condition for it's age with some light age yellowing on the margins, two marginal worm holes and some slight colour show through on the verso.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days In this sharply innovative collection, renowned poet Fred Chappell layers words and images to create a new and dramatic poetic form -- the poem-within-a-poem. Like the shadow box in the volume's title, each piece consists of an inner world contained, framed, supported by an outer -- the two interdependent, sometimes supplementary, often contrary. For example, the grim but gorgeous "The Caretakers" is a landscape that reveals another image inside it. Chappell also introduces sonnets in which the sestet nests within the octet. Play serves as an important component, but the poems do not depend upon gamesmanship or verbal strategems. Instead, they delicately or wittily trace human feelings, respond somberly to the news of the world, and rejoice in humankind's plentiful variety of attitudes and beliefs. Just as an x-ray can show the inner structure of a physical object, so the techniques in Shadow Box display the internal energies of the separate works. With this new form -- the "enclosed" or "embedded" or "inlaid" poem -- Chappell broadens the expressive possibilities of formal poetry, intrigues the imagination in an entirely new way, and offers surprise and revelation in sudden flashes. At once revolutionary and traditional, Shadow Box contains an Aladdin's trove of surprises. Features Summary The two-for-the-price-of-one poems in Shadow Boxpoems enclosed, or embedded, or inlaid within poems--comprise a new and dramatic verse form by one of Americas most respected poets...
