1982 German CBS pressing, release number CBS 85965, of PETER HOFMANN performing Rock & Folk classics, including songs by the BEATLES, MOODY BLUES, SIMON & GARFUNKEL, with members of the 'Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin'. Special guest on 'Scarborough Fair': DEBORAH SASSON. The record is in an almost unplayed, near mint condition. The cover has corner bumps at the bottom and some very light scuffing on the edges, otherwise excellent. Tracks are, SIDE ONE: The House Of The Rising Sun / Scarborough Fair / The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore / The Long And Winding Road / MacArthur Park.  SIDE TWO: Sailing / Yesterday / Say Goodbye To Hollywood / Nights in White Satin / Bridge Over Troubled Waters.

Thanks to the precise arrangements by John Metcalf and Peter, the treatment was so successful that Peter very quickly knew where he wanted to take it next, and work began to apply the same principals to his own songs. Great care has been taken, and much discussion shared, in deciding what songs were included on New Blood. It wasnt simply a case of giving the big numbers an orchestral re-rub. Indeed, some of the big hits are missing in favour of lesser-known material. But the intention wasnt a deliberate obliqueness; it was more a case of finding the songs that would be enhanced by the massed strings, brass, woodwind and percussion. The orchestra provides different dimensions to the music that werent there initially, confirms Peter. Rock artists work slowly in studios, building up layer by layer, and one of the great, powerful advantages of an orchestra is all these musicians playing at one moment with all sorts of colours and personalities. And in front of orchestra, taking centre stage when necessary, retreating into the shadows when not, is Peters rich voice. Retaining its trademark emotive power, it returns to lyrics written 20 or 30 years ago, reinvesting them with new meaning and heightened poignancy. Broadcast by the BBC as Together And Apart, Sum Of The Parts is the official authorised story of Genesis made with the full co-operation of the band members. It tells of the band s formation at Charterhouse (where Tony Banks, Peter Gabriel and Mike Rutherford were all pupils) in the late sixties and the release of their debut album From Genesis To Revelation. The story then moves on through the departure of founder member Anthony Phillips and the arrival of Phil Collins and Steve Hackett in 1970 to form the 5-man line-up that established the band s career with albums such as Foxtrot and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Peter Gabriel s departure in 1975 and then Steve Hackett s in 1977 led to the release of the album And Then There Were Three... and a move towards shorter, more immediate songs.
