The expanded frequency range ensures faithful reproduction of all drum types and the 72 mm long flexible gooseneck allows it to be optimally positioned relative to the sound source. An elastic capsule suspension on the capsule housing protects against damage from drumstick strikes. The new electronics provide increased level accuracy and guarantee a very high maximum sound pressure level - even with phantom powering below 44 V.

The Rhode M3 is a highly versatile end-address condenser microphone, designed to be completely at home in the studio, on stage or on location. It is equally suitable as an instrument microphone for guitars, drums and percussion or even vocals. Featuring a heavy duty metal body and internally shock mounted 1 and 2" condenser capsule mounted for end-address, the M3 can be powered either via P48 phantom power, or an internal 9V battery. A -10dB and -20dB level attenuator (pad), selectable from inside the battery compartment, allows recording of loud sound sources, such as a guitar amplifier or snare drum. A high-pass filter selectable on the microphone power switch introduces a filter at 80Hz to reduce low frequency sounds and handling noise.

They come in many sizes and designs, can be made of tin, sheet metal, or old soup or coffee cans, and are said to represent a variety of things (shields worn by drummers in battle, covers to protest the master drummer's magic, or reflectors to direct sunlight toward the drum head to keep it taught). When the djembe is played the ksink ksink create a sympathetic metalic rattling, adding body and accents to the music. They are sometimes called the "djembe snare". They can be slipped through the crown loops, woven through the verticals, or secured with a rubber strip tied around the belly.
