With units ranging from elephants and inflammable pigs to centurions and escaped slaves just watching the battles unfold is as epic as any Hollywood blockbuster. Whats perhaps most impressive about the game is that controlling such huge numbers of soldiers is actually surprisingly easy with a simple point-and-click interface making everything as smooth as possible. Rome: Total War is one of those rare breed of games that is largely impossible to fault. As such one button controls the feet, one your open hand, one your weapon hand and the other your head. As an assassin stealth plays an important role in the game too, but here its often a case of hiding in plain sight as you mill around inside large crowds of people. Everyone will react to you realistically though, so if you go around pushing people out of the way, or even killing them, the crowd will react and report you. The setup is similar to most: selecting from friendlies, tournaments and leagues (complete with promotion and relegation battles), you take control of your team and aim to play your way through to the top. The array of customisable options is certainly an asset to the game, and once you've got to grips with the fussy control system, there is a reasonable challenge ahead. But what stops UEFA Challenge from competing with the far superior FIFA is polish and gameplay. Whereas EA Sports' all-conquering champion consistently serves up tweaked, fast-flowing football, UEFA Challenge lacks a little of the urgency (without the expected tactical benefits) and certainly the tightness of FIFA, although it does fare reasonably on the multimedia front, with plenty of nice graphical and audio touches throughout the game. For more experienced players, willing to work their way through a relatively steep learning curve and the occasional design shortcoming, UEFA Challenge does present an alternative challenge in a genre with few genuine stand out titles on the PC. The game mechanics are standard fare for an RPG: acquisition of items and spells, turn-based combat, experience points earned in combat allowing advances in levels. From exploration to battles to dialogue, Final Fantasy VIII has it all. However, Final Fantasy VIII falls to that great weakness of RPGs: random battles. While necessary for advancing in levels, the battles occur with such frequency that they can grow annoying, making for a tedious game experience. The epic storyline spans four discs--over 40 hours of gameplay--and is based around a mercenary cadet who finds himself caught up with an underground rebel faction. He winds up in a plot to assassinate the sorceress who has just seized power from the president. You could complain of limited replay value, but this gripe is of no consequence: the game is such a satisfying experience, it doesn't require replay. Final Fantasy VIII is easily worth both the hype and the wait.
