The game is set just a few years after the events of the original C&C: Red Alert and opens with a surprise Soviet invasion of the US mainland. Playing as the startled Americans, you must cobble together a resistance and beat the invaders back into the sea. Playing as the Soviets, you must quickly establish control of your new domain, wiping out all opposition you meet. Red Alert 2 is very similar to the original Red Alert, with some visual enhancements and gameplay improvements brought in from Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun. You still lead a small group of infantry and armoured units in most missions and you still have to assemble a base of operations in order to accomplish just about anything. This time around, however, you'll have a slew of new units to build and command in the field--most of which are pretty slick. The American Prism Tank, for example, can take out numerous enemy units with a single, branching attack. On the Soviet side, Tesla Troopers and Psychics help make ground troops a formidable asset. Another nice addition to the game is the ability to garrison troops inside buildings. Because much of the fighting is on city streets, it helps to give your troops some cover from time to time. Also, there are a number of special buildings that provide unique advantages once occupied by engineer units. The airport allows you to call in air strikes, for example, while oil derricks provide a resource boost for your war machine. Multiplayer support is still the calling card of this series, and fans of past C&C games will not be disappointed by Red Alert 2's multiplayer options. The basic free-for-all mode that the original Red Alert made famous is still intact, but the alternative multiplayer modes are the real treat. In Unholy Alliance, players get access to both American and Soviet tech trees, while the naval war variant starts each player off on a small island. In addition, the game includes special cooperative campaigns. There's no denying Red Alert 2's charm, despite the lack of a funky 3-D engine and the game's reliance on video cut scenes to tell the story. You aren't actually there; you are virtually doing the heist, seeing where the guards are, cutting alarm wires and stealing goods. Once you are satisfied, you get to implement your plan. This basically means you press play and the scheme that you recorded gets played back, you have no control over this and it will go exactly as you planned it. Each robbery has a specified amount of loot that you need to pick up and when your account is in the green and you have made it back to the car in one piece, a dialogue box pops up congratulating you on a successful job. If you got spotted the jig is up and you fail and have to go back to the drawing board. And ultimately that's it, you pull out of a job, you sell the loot, you buy better equipment so that you can pull off more daring jobs and the whole cycle begins again, until all the other denizens of the underworld think Matt is the coolest burglar in town. There are few peaceful moments in the game--you're given the briefing and you've got to keep your finances up by wiping out the enemy and capturing ground instead of by C&C -style resource management. The problems are more familiar, with sluggish and sometimes unintelligent robots, although since the construction robots repair the warrior units, they are of course deliberately slower at times, forcing you to group them up. This can be mastered, but the camera takes longer--this 3-D system still doesn't beat Ground Control or Earth 2150 for the flexibility of views. So what made the original ahead of its time--the pure speed of gameplay required--is also ZSS 's major attraction. As its robot vs robot there's next to no blood, and the maximum install is around 650 MB. So if you have sat screaming at Simon, Dr Fox, Nicky and Pete and declaiming that you could do a better job with your hands tied behind you back, then the new management sim, Rock Manager might just be the game for you. Rock Manager is basically a series of missions where you have to take your no-hopers and turn them into superstars. The first mission is to form a band, get a record contract, release a single and get it in the top 10. Then you have various other tasks from organising a comeback tour for a bunch of aging metal heads, to persuading a reluctant musician to re-enter the limelight so you can throw him to the media lions and get your cut before he gives up the wonderful business we call show, for good. The recording studio is probably the most open-ended bit of the game play. Here you get to twiddle your knobs, increase your time-shift and hire some talented session musicians to drown out the waling of your newbies. Once you have a song its time to pimp it round the record companies and try and get a deal and then the fun bit starts. You need to release an album. First get your sleeve designed (there are several options to choose from at the graphic designers pad) then schedule a release date. Then you need to build up some hype by playing a few gigs at the various venues in town, sending the local hacks some press kits and even getting a music video made. As far as the game is concerned, there are a few glitches in what appears to be a really good concept. The game play appears quite linear; often there seems to be one particular way to win a mission so you spend hours trying to find the formula. The second problem is that there isnt a save option so if you make a really stupid mistake in an otherwise exemplary career you have to start again. You still have to readjust your control method because different camera angles cause different character directions onscreen although the controls remain the same, which is no real problem for Tomb Raider fans, but it's the second time one of the features of Blair Witch Vol.1 has been better executed elsewhere and your technique needs to be totally relearned. One nice feature however, is the first-person night vision, which is deliberately blurred to recreate the film's night video view feel. Since at least two more episodes are due for release by Gathering of Developers, don't kid yourself that it's all over when you get to the end.
