Nina grew up in the Southern township of Umlazi in Durban. She was introduced to music by her mother who sang jazz, marabi, mbube and revolutionary songs around the house while growing up. It was then when her huge interest in music performance was noticed by her mother and was send to study further at Natal Tech after high school, where she completed a National Diploma in light music. Her time at tech proved worthwhile and promised a future jazz maestro such that, in the year as a student she was invited to do leading and backing vocals for the internationally acclaimed ‘Shuttle Band’ which was commissioned by the Nordic Council of Ministers and saw a collaboration between South African and Scandinavian musicians namely Ray Phiri, Gito Baloi, Concord Nkabinde (SA) and Stien Casternsen, Bendik Hofseth, Ricard Nettermalm (Scandinavia). Nina also won the Old Mutual Jazz Encounter’s Award – Afro Jazz Vocalist & Best Composition (National Winner - ). The year was an affirmation of Nina’s immense talent, such that she was invited to perform at the North Sea Jazz Festival. During the 10th South African Freedom Celebrations, she went on to conduct workshops on South African Jazz and township music in Brasilia and Sao Paulo, Brazil through an initiative organised by The Jazz Foundation and The South African Embassy. We will see Nina Mkhize on the night performing her own compositions with her band and we are in for a great treat of her beautiful music.
