At a time when the verismo operas enjoyed great success, the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak turned to the world of fairy tales for his penultimate opera. Finally his hopes were fulfilled and one of his works for the stage was successful. Today Rusalka is as popular with Czech children and adults as Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel is in Germany. With Ren Fleming in the title role as Rusalka, this production is a rare and outstanding document for a modern staging of this Czech national opera.    

With its inventive tonality and restrained instrumentation TURANDOT remains the best example of Giacomo Puccinis ability to inhabit and interpret the musical tendencies of his day. This lavish production features an interpretation informed by Puccinis misgivings about the operas final scene.    

Fritz Lang's 5-hour epic 'Die Nibelungen' of 1924. Newly restored version. The saga of the Nibelungs was also the source for Wagner's 'Ring' cycle of operas. The hero Siegfried is almost invincible after bathing in dragon's blood but his marriage into the Nibelungs' clan is soon destroyed. His widow plots a bitter revenge.    

The operas CAVELLERIA RUSTICANA and PAGLIACCI are intertwined in this production. Musical direction by Jesus Lopez Cobos.

Very Good condition Since winning the Luciano Pavarotti International Competition, then in 1990 making his debut in  La Traviata  at the Monte Carlo Opera, Roberto Alagna has been acclaimed as the most outstanding tenor of his generation.  Soprano Angela Gheorghiu was discovered the same year at the Bucharest Music Academy, and her recording of  La Traviata  won the 1996 Classic CD of the Year award.  That same year the couple married and made their first album together, this collection of 14 duets and arias.  There are ten duets, which each star having two solo arias.  The music is mostly from the great romantic operas of the nineteenth century, the exception being the duet "Tonight" from Leonard Bernstein's marvellous Broadway musical  West Side Story.  Gheorghiu is heard solo performing "Depuis le jour", an elegy to remembered love from Charpentier's  Louise, and Donizetti's "Al dolce guidami" from  Anna Bolena, before uniting with Alagna for the same composer's "Tornami a dir" from  Don Pasquale.  Alagna is found solo in Massenet and Offenbach, while together the singers voices entwine to magical effect in duets by Mascagni, Berlioz, Puccini, and others.  With performances as enchanting as one could possibly wish for, this luxurious and immaculately produced anthology of passionately romantic music is delightful addition to any music collection. *** Please do look at my other items for sale; combined shipping available. ***
