A copy of the Author's first book that won the Thomas Pringle Prize and the Cholmondeley Award. Very good with minimal shelf wear. The following information is taken from the Contemporary Writers website. Christopher Hope's poems were first published in Whitewashes (1971), but his first significant publication was Cape Drives (1974), which won the Thomas Pringle Prize and a Cholmondeley Award. His published poetry also includes In the Country of the Black Pig (1981) and Englishmen (1985). His first novel, A Separate Development (1981), was banned in South Africa. A rich, comic satire of the apartheid system, it won the David Higham Prize for Fiction. His other novels include Kruger's Alp (1984), which won the Whitbread Novel Award; The Hottentot Room (1986), set in a London drinking club, a home from home for South African exiles; and My Chocolate Redeemer (1989), the story of an unlikely friendship between a 15-year-old girl and an exiled dictator. There were turmoil's of the unknown, beauty versus the hideous, and the passion of going beyond. I closed my eyes and walked fifty paces. There was still nothing on the endless horizon. Then I sat down in the sand and drew a map of Africa - pushing my finger into Cape Town and slowly drawing it along the sand up all Eastern Africa, Ethiopia and in to the Sudan. Then, I thought I saw him, the old Sangoma, there in the Zulu hills holding his puffadder. I moved my finger northward towards Cairo. The sand was hot, but I am sure I could see his smile. Obie Oberholzer began this, his fourth major photographic odyssey, in Cape Town, on the 1st of April 1994. He meandered his way north, across plateaus and plains, through valleys and over mountains up along Africa's eastern side. There were jungles to come and vast deserts and roads that were no longer roads. He travelled the byways through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritria and Sudan to Egypt (via Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel). In the parking lot near the Great Pyramids of Giza, he wiped the dust from his dashboard. The distance read 40,000 kilometres and the time said 9 months and twenty days. This is his story. Maskew Miller, Cape Town.  Circa 1922?  Hard cover, no dustjacket.  Condition:  Is an old school library book and comes with the associated stamps etc.  Very scarce book!  The spine is faded and there are marks on the front and back boards. The corners are rubbed and bumped and the spine edge has a couple of fine splits.  See Pics. There is foxing and discolouration, but mostly to the first and last pages and the page edges.
