It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days How do political ideologies and urban landscapes intersect in the context of globalization? This volume illuminates the production of ideologies as both discursive and spatial phenomena in distinct contributions that ground their analysis in cities of the Global North and South. From Sydney to Singapore, Hong Kong to Hanoi, Las Vegas to Macau, conventional public spaces are in decline as sites of ideological dissent. Instead, we are witnessing the colonisation of urban space by market globalism (today's dominant global ideology) and securitised surveillance regimes. Against this backdrop, how should we interpret the proliferation of metaphors that claim to communicate the essence of global transformation? In what ways do space and language work together to normalise the truth claims of powerful ideological players? What kinds of social forces mobilise to contest the cooptation of language and space and to pose alternative local and global futures? This volume poses these questions against the collapse of old geographical scales and cartographic techniques for identifying the contours of civil society. The city acts as an entry point to a new spatial analytics of contemporary ideological forces. This book was published as a special issue of Globalizations. Features Summary This volume illuminates the spread of ideologies as both discursive and spatial phenomena in distinct contributions that ground their analysis in cities of the global north and south. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days "Keith Althaus has the kind of straightforward voice that commands attention: He makes a series of seemingly calm statements and wham, you're hit by the fact that he's telling the truth, the beautiful truth of what it's like to be alive right now."--Alan Dugan Keith Althaus published his first book ("Rival Heavens," Provincetown Arts Press) in 1993 and has been working in relative obscurity ever since. "Ladder of Hours "gathers poems written over four decades, a selection that teaches us how insight into everyday life can transform the world. Composed in language that is spare, almost skeletal, yet lacking nothing, "Ladder of Hours "investigates the subtleties of moments we might otherwise overlook. Althaus is interested in everything, from the label on a whiskey bottle to the distance between emotion and idea. His poems explode "ordinary" moments of perception, revealing unexpected meaning and resonance, and they do so in a way that seems strangely without ego, bent entirely on extracting and capturing the essence of his discoveries. "Ladder of Hours "takes us into numinous territory we didn't know was there. "Lullaby" "The painful series of operation that culminate in death: becoming forty, eighty, neither one. Dying young or old, awake or drugged, or pleasantly unaware in sleep as they say Auden wanted to and did, with just the slightest sensation, like a sleeping baby handed from one pair of arms into another." Keith Althaus has published poems in "The New Yorker," "The American Poetry Review," "Poetry," and numerous other magazines. He has worked at many jobs, including carpentry, tree planting, loft renovation, and clerical work, and now runs a gallery with his wife, the artist Susan Baker. They live in North Truro, Massachusetts. Features Summary Minimal yet full of mystery, Althaus poems explore complexities and subtle moments of everyday experience. This is an original 470 year old hand coloured print from the first edition of Conrad Gessner's bird book published at Zurich by Christoffel Froschower in 1557. Gessner's bird book was part of a four volume set known as the Historiae Animalium or "Histories of Animals" appearing from 1551-1558. It was an encyclopedic work of an inventory of Renaissance zoology. Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) was a Swiss naturalist and bibliographer. It is the first modern zoological work that attempts to describe all known animals, and the first bibliography of natural history writings. Historiae Animalium appeared in four volumes (quadrupeds, birds, fishes) from 1551-1558. Volume 1 was an illustrated work on live-bearing four-footed animals, Volume 2 on egg-laying quadrupeds, Volume three on birds and Volume four on fish and other aquatic animals. A condensed popular version translated into German and known as Gessner's Thierbuch or "animal book" was published in Zurich in 1563. Gessner was a protestant and his work was added to the Roman Catholic Church's list of prohibited books soon after publication. Pope Paul IV strongly believed that the religious convictions of an author contaminated all his writings. Though it is a large work Gessner sought to distinguish facts from myth, his encyclopedic work also included mythical creatures and imaginary beasts, intermixed with the strange newly discovered animals from the East Indies, those of the far north and animals brought back from the New World. Gessner made many of the illustrations for this work himself but acknowledges that he also sought the help of other artists, one being Lucas Schan from Strasbourg. The layout of the work is in the traditional style of the emblem book where images are accompanied by explanatory text and the names of animals are given in different languages. Gessner was ennobled in 1564 and in many later sources he is referred to as Conrad Von Gessner. He did not live long as a nobleman though as he died from the plague scarcely a year later. Patrons of the period had the option of purchasing either uncoloured copies for 2 Guilders or coloured copies for 3 Guilders. If the order was for a coloured copy the book was then sent to specialist shops for this purpose. This leaf is from an incomplete coloured copy. The leaf is in great condition for it's age with some light age yellowing on the margins, two marginal worm holes and some slight colour show through on the verso.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days A wonderful story of what family means, of the flesh-level pain of sibling rivalry, and the discovery of love. It is a fantastic and beautiful tapestry of some of the most imaginative and precise prose writing going on in America today. Toby Olson stands tall among the handful of writers I most admire and respect.--Richard Wiley "Write A Letter to Billy" is a delectably complicated maze that kept me spellbound from start to finish. Only the most sophisticated of writers could manage to combine the seriousness of a quest for identity and meaning with the intensity of a thriller, not to mention an excursion into deep-sea diving and the resort life of southern California. Once again, Toby Olson has written a terrific novel full of peril and surprise, offering startling revelations and sudden expansions of the heart and mind."--Lynne Sharon Schwartz United with a long-lost teenage daughter, a retired Navy underwater repair specialist investigates a mysterious list his father had written just before his death. Some of the items are crossed off, but one of the unfinished tasks haunts him: "Write letter to Billy." What had his father planned to tell him? What he learns changes his life forever. Influenced by D.H. Lawrence, William Faulkner, and Charles Dickens, Toby Olson's pointed examination of memory and consciousness illustrates how the unraveling of external mystery leads to self discovery. Toby Olson, winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction, has published eight books of fiction and twenty-two books of poetry. His work has appeared in over two hundred newspapers, magazines, and anthologies. Olson's novels include "At Sea," "Dorit in Lesbos, Utah, " and "The Woman Who Escaped from Shame." He lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and North Truro, Massachusetts. Features Summary In this literary adventure tale, Bill teaches deep sea diving to his daughter and discovers deep secrets about his own past.   Suzanne Collins- The Hunger Games Trilogy(MOBI-EPUB-PDF)[Team Nanban][TPB]  FORMAT: MOBI, PDF, EPUB  ISBN: 0439023483 | ISBN: 978-0-439-02349-8 | ISBN: 978-0-439-02351-1 | Size: 8.53 MB  DESCRIPTION:  The Hunger Games:  The Hunger Games is a young-adult science fiction novel written by Suzanne Collins. It was originally published on September 14, 2008, by Scholastic.  It is the first book of the Hunger Games trilogy. It introduces sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in a post-apocalyptic world in the country of  Panem where North America once existed. This is where a government working in a central city called the Capitol holds power. In the book,  the Hunger Games are an annual televised event where the Capitol chooses one boy and one girl from each of 12 districts to fight to the death.  The Hunger Games exist to demonstrate that not even children are beyond the reach of the Capitol's jurisdiction.  Catching Fire:  Katniss learns that the Capitol is angry at her for her defiance in the previous novel, which started a chain reaction that inspired rebellion in the districts.  For a special 75th edition of the Hunger Games, she and Peeta are forced into competing a second time with other past winners. They team up with a  few other tributes and manage to destroy the arena and escape the Games. Katniss is transported to District 13, a place that is widely thought to  no longer exist, but Peeta is captured by the Capitol.  Mockingjay  Mockingjay, the third and final book, centers around Katniss and the districts' rebellion against the Capitol. Katniss, now a refugee in District 13,  demands the right to kill President Snow. Peeta and the others who were captured by the Capitol are rescued by a party including Gale,  but Peeta's memories have been "hijacked" with the use of tracker jacker venom, which causes him to hate Katniss. He tries to kill Katniss, but is restrained.  Finally, a group including Katniss, Gale, and a normalized Peeta go to the Capitol on a mission to assassinate President Snow. Before Katniss can reach him,  her little sister Prim is killed in a bombing. Snow later tells Katniss that Coin, the president of District 13, was behind the bombing.  During Snow's execution Katniss shoots Coin, and later Snow is also found dead, possibly from choking on his own blood.  Katniss has a psychotic break, and tries to kill herself while in solitary confinement. Katniss, Peeta, and Haymitch return to District 12, and  Katniss eventually begins to recover. In the epilogue, it is revealed that Katniss and Peeta are married and have two children.

Books and wrappers in very good condition - Previously belonged to Stuart Hendry, Longtime History Master at Pretoria Boys High and all 4 have his signature and bookplate inside - Stunning wrappers now in removable transparent sleeves.  >>>    Cassell and Company, Ltd., London, First edition, first printing. This is a jacketed, British first edition set of Churchill's sweeping history and last great work. Churchill's four volume epic, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, was published between 1956 and 1958. The work traces a great historical arc from Roman Britain through the end of the Nineteenth Century, ending with the death of Queen Victoria. Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the very year that saw Churchill conclude his first North American lecture tour, take his first seat in Parliament, and begin to make history himself. The work itself was two decades in the making. The Churchillian conceptions that underpinned it were lifelong. The cultural commonality and vitality of English-speaking peoples animated Churchill throughout his life, from his Victorian youth in an ascendant British Empire to his twilight in the midst of the American century. Churchill began A History of the English-Speaking Peoples in the 1930s, completing a draft of "about half a million words" which was set aside when Churchill returned to the Admiralty and to war in September 1939. The work was fittingly interrupted by an unprecedented alliance among the English-speaking peoples during the Second World War - an alliance Churchill personally did much to cultivate, cement, and sustain. The interruption continued as Churchill bent his literary efforts to his six-volume history, The Second World War, and then his remaining political energies to his second and final premiership from 1951-1955. This first edition is regarded as one of the most beautiful productions of Churchill's works, with tall red volumes and striking, illustrated dust jackets.     *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book   – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.
