The Venus Fly Trap (Dionaea muscipula) is the most well-known species of carnivorous plants. These insectivorous plants lure their prey using sweet-smelling nectar. When an insect lands on the head of the fly trap, they seek the source of the nectar, and if the plant is lucky, it will touch one of the many trigger hairs located within the jaws of the trap. Once triggered, the trap snaps closed, trapping the victim. The plant then secretes an enzyme which essentially 'dissolves' the insect, turning it into a digestible dinner. After a few days, the fly trap will re-open, to await its next victim. Venus Fly Traps are quite easy to grow, as long as they are given the proper conditions.            The Venus flytrap has a rosette of leaves up to 20 cm across. Each leaf has a flat stalk and ends in a trap. The centre is often reddish, and the sides of the trap are lined with stiff, comb-like bristles that interlock when the trap closes. The flowers are white, in a cluster at the top of a cm leafless stalk. They should be grown in very bright light, but not in direct, hot sun. A warm, humid environment, with a constant supply of moisture, such as you would find in a terrarium is ideal. The potting mixture should consist of a mix of 70% Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss and 30% Horticultural Perlite. The Venus flytrap also known as Venus's flytrap or Venus' flytrap is a carnivorous plant native to subtropical wetlands on the East Coast of the United States. Dionaea is a monotypic genus closely related to the waterwheel plant and sundews, all of which belong to the family Droseraceae.  The Venus flytrap is commonly grown as a curiosity plant and is a source of wonder for children and adults alike. Indeed, it is likely that the Venus flytrap has been the source of inspiration for many a horror film involving man-eating plants – a somewhat unique “use” within the plant kingdom! Dionaea muscipula has also been shown to contain naphthoquinones that may have medicinal value. These Dionaea muscipula seeds are the product of careful hand pollination of numerous superior Venus Flytrap clones. The seed and pollen parents of these seeds include Big Mouth, Red Dragon, Red Piranha, B52, Royal Red, Czech Giant, Southwest Giant, FTS Maroon Monster, Low Giant, Jaws, Big Vigorous, Fused Tooth, Sawtooth and Holland Red. This pack consists of Mixed Giant Dionaea muscipula Forms

KOREAN MINT – AGASTACHE RUGOSA Agastache Rugosa has tall spikes of lavender to rich purple blue lipped flowers, above toothed dark green arrow shaped foliage. When brushed past or crushed, the foliage emits a sweet liquorice perfume. A wonderful plant for attracting bees and butterflies to the garden, while adding a robust perennial to the border in the summer months. The aromatic leaves of are edible. Young growth can be sprinkled in salads, used to decorate cakes, used to make a tea or floated in drinks. Agastache added to your Pimms lifts it to a higher sphere altogether. These easy-to-grow and easy to care for plants enjoy dry soils and sunny positions. A short-lived perennial they will flower in the same year given an early sowing and can be used as an annual. Agastache is a ‘wonder honey plant’, it produces copious amounts of nectar for bees and butterflies to feast upon. It is an important crop for commercial honey production, it is estimated that just one acre of Agastache can support over 100 hives. Because of its later season and prolific flowering, it is a boon for building up bees’ honey reserves before winter and will produce a honey surplus where drifts are grown. The flowers produce nectar that makes a light, good-quality honey. In addition goldfinches and other small birds love the seeds in winter. View our other items by clicking on the shield:

Plumeria (common name Frangipani) is a genus of flowering plants of the family that includes Dogbane. It contains 7-8 species of mainly deciduous shrubs and small trees. They are native to New Zealand, Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America as far south as Brazil but have been spread throughout the world's tropics.[Plumeria is related to the Oleander, Nerium oleander, and both possess an irritant, rather similar to that of Euphorbia. Contact with the sap may irritate eyes and skin. Each of the separate species of Plumeria bears differently shaped alternate leaves, with distinct form and growth habits. The leaves of P. alba are quite narrow and corrugated, whereas leaves of P. pudica have an elongated shape and glossy, dark-green colour. P. pudica is one of the ever blooming types with non-deciduous, evergreen leaves. Another species that retains leaves and flowers in winter is P. obtusa; though its common name is "Singapore," it is originally from Colombia. Plumeria flowers are most fragrant at night in order to lure sphinx moths to pollinate them. The flowers have no nectar, and simply dupe their pollinators. The moths inadvertently pollinate them by transferring pollen from flower to flower in their fruitless search for nectar.   A mixture of 8 different Plumeria species.   Please familiarise yourself with the shipping info below Shipping Rates are as listed below Approximate processing and transit times are listed below PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT SHIP OUTSIDE OF SOUTH AFRICA

Wurmbea stricta Seeds Common Names: Vleiblommetjie, Marshflower Wurmbea is a genus is the Colchicaceae family from sub-saharan Africa and Australia. The rootstock is a corm and flowers are star or trumpet-shaped. Scantily known in cultivation, the starry pink-and-white flowers of this easily grown cormous plant really deserve a place in containers, shallow garden ponds and rock garden pockets. Wurmbea stricta is a deciduous, winter-growing geophyte reaching up to 0.6 m high. The subterranean storage organ is a deep-seated, irregularly shaped corm surrounded by dark brown membranous outer tunics, and produces three narrow, very straight, erect or suberect, dark green leaves that resemble knitting needles. Its striking star-shaped flowers are produced alternately along an elongated spike, the tepals varying in colour from pure white to pale pink. Each tepal has a small claw at the base and two prominent, deep pink glands that produce nectar. Vast quantities of seed are produced in attractive erect, narrowly egg-shaped capsules. Wurmbea stricta, together with Wurmbea punctata, differ from most other wurmbea species by having their petals completely separate rather than being joined at the base into a short or long tube. Wurmbea punctata is a smaller plant with white to ddep pink pink flowers and lance-shaped leaves, occurring on stony hillsides and seeps in the Western Cape. Strelitzia is a genus of five species of perennial plants, indigenous to South Africa. The name Strelitzia was given to honour Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III of England. She was from the house of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A common name of the genus is bird of paradise flower, because of a supposed resemblance of its flowers to the bird of paradise. In South Africa it is commonly known as a crane flower. The flowers are ideal for cut flowers and last up to 20 days in a vase. They can all be grown in large pots or tubs but will require regular feeding and irrigation. There are three tree-like Strelitzia species Strelitzia alba, Strelitzia caudata and Strelitzia nicolai. The other two species Strelitzia reginae and Strelitzia juncea are shrub-like tufted clump-forming species. In Kirstenbosch released a yellow variety of Strelitzia reginae which in was named Mandela’s Gold in honour of Nelson Mandela.           Strelitzias are easy plants to grow in the garden. Plants do well in full sun to semi-shade, love a rich loamy soil and plenty of water throughout the year. They respond well to regular feeding with a slow release fertilizer and compost. They are however very tolerant plants and will thrive in most soils and can survive with very little water once established. The plants are also wind resistant and grow well in coastal gardens. Strelitzias are sensitive to cold and would need a sheltered position in areas with frost as the flowers and leaves are often damaged by frost. In very cold climates it is better to grow them in pots that could be moved indoors when freezing temperatures are expected. Strelitzia reginae is a bold structural plant, which forms large evergreen clumps of stiff leaves growing up from the base. The grey-green banana-like leaves grow about 1,5 m in height and the flowers stand above the foliage at the tips of long stalks. Mature plants are very floriferous with flowers in autumn, winter and spring. The structure and pollination of the flowers are rather interesting. The hard, beak-like sheath from which the flower emerges, is called the spathe. This is placed at right angles to the stem, which gives it the appearance of a bird's head. When the birds sit to have a drink of nectar, the petals open to cover their feet in pollen.

The genus Moraea belongs to the Iridaceae family and is a close relative of the genus Iris. It is accepted that it evolved independently from Iris itself, which is restricted to the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore, it is strictly an African genus extending from Nigeria and southern Ethiopia, into the African highlands down to the southern tip of Africa where winter rainfall is predominant. Many are indigenous to South Africa. It is in the winter rainfall area where one finds the highest concentration of Moraea species. They have long narrow basal leaves, sometimes only one per corm and large yellow, pink, orange, or bicolor flowers with six fairly equal tepals. The genus name is a tribute to the English botanist Robert Moore. Moraea s have iris-like flowers. They make good potted plants and are suitable rockery plants too. Most enjoy well-drained soil and full sun to flower best. Moraea elliottii is a South African indigenous species from the Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Western Cape Provinces. It was previously known as Moraea juncifolia, Moraea macra, Moraea stewartae and Moraea violacea. Commonly known as Bloutulp in Afrikaans this summer growing species grows to 50cm tall with a terete/channelled leaf. From spring to autumn it bears attractive blue-violet flowers with yellow to orange nectar guides.

Dietes grandiflora Seeds Common Names: Large Wild Iris, Fairy Iris This well known indigenous large wild iris is commonly grown in gardens and used in large landscapes throughout the country. It is a perennial, evergreen plant which grows up to 1.5m in large clumps. It grows naturally along the eastern coastal areas of the southern Cape, Eastern Cape and southern Kwazulu-Natal where it may be found in full sun or partial shade at forest margins, or in the shelter of taller shrubs on exposed slopes facing the sea. The name Dietes means "having two relatives" and refers to the relationship between this genus and Moraea and Iris. Grandiflora means "large flower". Dietes grandiflora plants grow from underground rhizomes. The long, rigid, sword-shaped leaves are held in a fan shape. The leaves are dark green and may reach up to 1m long and mm wide. The attractive flowers are large (about 100mm across) and are white with yellow nectar guides and outer tepals and violet central segments. The flowers are held on erect, slender stems which are about 1m in length. The flowers are borne in mass at certain periods - often after rain in summer. The individual flowers do not last more than a couple of days (so are of no use in a vase) however, the plant bears so many flowers during the peak period that the plant looks most striking. The flowers attract lots of bees and other pollinators. This plant is occasionally called the "Fairy Iris" because the fragile white petals not only look like fairy wings, but also have a tendency to disappear mysteriously overnight! The bid amount is for 1 Seed We'll supply you with all the germination & care instructions.

Leucosidea sericea Seeds Common Names: Oldwood or Ouhout This is a small tree of great character which grows in the eastern parts of South Africa. It is a very versatile addition to the indigenous garden. Leucosidea sericea, commonly known as Oldwood or Ouhout, is a species of evergreen tree and large shrub native to the Afromontane regions of Southern Africa. It is the sole species in the genus Leucosidea. The generic name (Leucosidea) is derived from the Greek words for "white or grey appearance", while the species name (sericea) is the Latin for "silky" in reference to the silky hairs on the leaves of the tree. The ouhout is often a straggly shrub or a dense, small, evergreen tree, which grows up to 7m tall to 5m wide. It is single or multi-stemmed and branches low down. The bark is rough, reddish brown in colour and flakes off to reveal a smooth light brown under-bark. The leaves are alternately arranged, compound and covered with silky, silver hairs. Each leaf possesses 3 to 4 pairs of leaflets. The veins on the leaves are deeply sunken on the upper surface and protrude on the lower surface. The leaves are a dark green colour above and a lighter green colour below. The margins of the leaflets are deeply serrated. When the leaves are crushed they have a strong herb-like smell. The flowers are greenish-yellow in colour, star-shaped, and grow in spikes at the ends of young shoots in spring (August to September). The fruits are nut-like and about 3 mm in diameter (December to January). This tree is usually found growing in dense thickets at altitudes above metres. It can be found growing in open grassland, along river banks and on wooded, rocky ridges. It is usually found growing in damp conditions, on deep, sandy or clayey and often rocky soil. Leucosidea sericea occurs in the Eastern Cape, Lesotho, western KwaZulu-Natal, the eastern Free State, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo provinces, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. The flowers and young shoots of this plant are browsed by cattle and goats in spring. It forms dense thickets on overgrazed, eroded or otherwise disturbed areas and can, therefore, become a problem plant on farm lands. The ouhout produces nectar which is probably utilised by bees and other insects. The wood makes good, durable fence posts in permanently wet soil even though it is soft. Apparentinous areas where the ouhout occurs near streams it is an indication that they are suitable for being stocked with trout. Zulu people use a paste made from the crushed leaves of Leucosidea sericea for treating ophthalmia (an eye ailment). The tree is used by the local people as a charm to protect the inhabitants of homesteads. The wood of this tree burns slowly and produces a lot of smoke like old and decaying wood. This together with the appearance of the flaky bark has given rise to the tree's common name of "oldwood".
