Vintage brass coated Naval/ Military hat box with life saving award - R.H. Pringle. I would date this old hat box to the 1930/40s. I think that it may be naval, as it is brass coated, and further that it may be from WW2 (from the materials it is manufactured from). The box also contained an Intermediate Certificate awarded by The Royal Life Saving Society to Robert H. Pringle in February 1935, indicating that he was closely connected to the sea. The box is round with his name plate on the top, and has a hinged lid with a lockable latch on the front. It measures 17cm (high) x 26cm (diameter), and in fair condition for its age - hinge and latch still work, but there is some wear to the brass plate. The certificate is distressed, and needs handling with care. Great buy for the collector of vintage militaria. Shipping note: This item falls into the 1kg - 5kg category (approximately 5kg). Please choose your delivery preference according to the rates stated under shipping. Combined postage is welcome, but please note the combined weight of the items, and choose delivery option according to the combined weight. Collection by the buyer is free - I will package your order securely. For international shipping, please request a quotation from me.

From; Goodreads;  Rating  4.27  out of 5 Stars;  Originally published to much acclaim in 1980, this is the story of the legendary German battleship that sunk the pride of the Royal Navy, HMS Hood, on May 24, 1941, and three days later was hunted down and sunk by the British during one of the most dramatic pursuits in naval history. Told by a German naval officer who witnessed both sinkings, the book chronicles the brief but sensational career of what was thought to be the grandest weapon of the Third Reich. Burkard Baron von Mullenheim-Rechberg, the Bismarck 's top-ranking survivor, tells the battleship's story from commissioning to the moment when the captain gave a final salute and went down with his ship. The epic battle between the two great enemy ships captured the imagination of an entire generation and became a popular subject for movies and songs. With the discovery a few years ago of the Bismarck 's sunken hull off the coast of France, worldwide attention has focused again on the famous ship. Reprinted now in paperback for the first time, the work presents the human dimensions of the event without neglecting the technical side and includes information on rudder damage and repair, overall ship damage, and code breaking. The book also provides insights into the author's life as a prisoner of war in England and Canada and the friction that existed between the Nazis and non-Nazis Germans in the camps. Such a personal look at one of the most famous sea encounters in the history of World War II makes absorbing reading.   World Wat two 11 II German Naval operations warships

In June 1940 following the Dunkirk evacuations, Britain stood alone. After witnessing the demoralized survivors first hand, Roxane Houston was determined to 'do her bit'. She volunteered to join the WRNS. From a comfortable background with a sheltered upbringing, she now began a remarkable, and sometimes difficult journey, set against six years of war. Starting in 1940 at the Royal Naval Air Station at St Merryn in south west England, under seemingly constant attack from the Luftwaffe, via the RNAS at Machrihanish in Scotland, preparing for Combined Operations at Largs and Greenock in the run-up to D-day, thence to Kandy and Colombo, in Ceylon, she did not return home until early 1946. She met many varied characters, making some lifelong friends, experienced much excitement and great danger, happiness and personal tragedy, and received more than one proposal of marriage. Now, in her twilight years, she revisits those momentous days which tested her and her contemporaries to the full. Her autobiography is a highly personal, often poignant account of her time as a Wren, which not only gives a fascinating insight into service life, but also reflects the reshaping of her own outlook and attitudes.
