It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days From 1972 to 1991, Eleanor Antin (born 1935) created multiple personae of different genders, races, professions, historical contexts and geographic locations. The artist called this motley group--which includes a deposed king, an exiled film director, ambitious ballerinas and hard-working nurses--her "selves." The selves' manifestations were as diverse as their stories: some were embodied by Antin and captured in photographs and on video; others had paper doll surrogates; at times their existence was known only through the drawings, texts and films they had ostensibly left behind. As she explored the fleeting nature of the self, Antin used fiction, fantasy and theatricality to examine the ways that history takes shape, scrutinizing the role that visual representation plays in that process. Multiple Occupancy: Eleanor Antin's "Selves" is the first project to focus exclusively on this critical body of work. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days `After I finished this book I alarmed my family by going into the garden and climbing the apple tree.' - Damian Whitworth, The Times `One of the publishing sensations of the year... For anyone who has ever felt a little overwhelmed in a big city, or wanted to step out of the rat race for an hour or two, Jack Cooke will be something of an inspiration.' - Robert Hardman, Daily Mail A wonderful cocktail of engaging writing, beautiful illustration and heartfelt appreciation for the natural world. An essential oddity for any book collection. In this charming, witty and exquisitely illustrated companion, Jack Cooke explores the city through its canopy; teetering on the edge of an oak's branches, scurrying up a Scots pine, spying views from the treetops that few have ever had the chance to see. He takes us through the parks, over the canals and rivers and into secret gardens on his journey sometimes only ten foot above the street. Part guidebook, part meditation on the consolations of nature, The Tree Climber's Guide is as uniquely odd, alluring and motley as the trees themselves. It is a journey into the tangle of bark and branches that surround us all and a welcome reminder that the best things in life are free - they just sometimes require a step in the right direction. Paperback. English. Oxford University Press. 1969. ISBN: 9780195007732. 326pp. In fair/good condition. For the past forty years The Nature of Narrative has been a seminal work for literary students, teachers, writers, and scholars. Countering the tendency to view the novel as the paradigm case of literary narrative, authors Robert Scholes and Robert Kellogg in the original edition offered a compelling history of the genre narrative from antiquity to the twentieth-century, even as they carried out their main task of describing and analyzing the nature of narrative's main elements: meaning, character, plot, and point of view. Their history emphasized the broad sweep of literary narrative from ancient times to the contemporary period, and it included a chapter on the oral heritage of written narrative and an appendix on the interior monologue in ancient texts. Paperback. English. Spearhead Books. 2000. In fair/good condition. The seed that grew into this guide was planted twenty years before it was published in the newspaper archives of Rhodes University, South Africa. As a journalism student the author was leafing through an old newspaper researching an assignment when he was struck dumb by a cartoon that, in just a few brushes, conveyed more than he could ever hope to write on the subject. This drawing of South Africa's political battlelines has produced not only a fascinating and informative look at the world of South Africa's political cartoons, but also at South African politics and journalism - a world cartoons portray in a way words cannot. Every day most major newspapers carry a cartoon comment on some topical subject or event- mostly political in nature. The reader's reaction to this supposedly humorous comment may vary from a wry smile to an agreeable full belly laugh, from outrage to righteous indignation.;What the reactions have in common is that they are emotional rather than reasoned responses that mask the messages in the cartoons. In Penpricks not only are the messages revealed, but at the same time the reader will glimpse South African politics from the other side of the mirror that the South African press holds up to its unique society.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days This book gives, for the first time, a comprehensive account of the works of architect, town planner and landscape architect, Sir Frederick Gibberd. At the beginning of his diverse and far-reaching career, Gibberd was a pioneer of modern architecture in Britain - he designed Pullman Court in 1933, one of the first International Style buildings in the country. His association with the Modern Architectural Research (MARS) Group and his influential publications put him at the forefront of the establishment of modern architecture in Britain. During the 1940s, however, Gibberd's interest shifted to the aesthetics of English market towns and Georgian streets; his diaries reveal a belief that the Modern Movement had `done its job', allowing architects to consider the visual, rather than functional qualities of materials, colour and texture. After the Second World War, his master plan for Harlow New Town and his influential book Town Design conveyed his growing interest in `visual planning'; he had become an international authority on the subject. His later projects, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral (1967) and Regent's Park Mosque (1977) for example, also reflected his aesthetic approach, prompting many to question his role as a key figure in the history of modern British architecture. This reassessment of Gibberd's work demonstrates, that with his visual approach to the design of buildings, spaces, townscapes and landscapes, Gibberd was at the forefront of the development of a softer, distinctly English form of modern architecture and town planning, thus, reaffirming his role as a significant architect of the 20th century. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 13 working days Can an architect pass through walls? Can the city permeate a house? In The Dissolution of Buildings, architect Angelo Bucci presents projects in his native Sao Paulo and abroad. Advocating an architecture that is "the opposite of global action," his work responds to the topography of the city and to its urban environment. In a lecture delivered at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Bucci discusses work designed with his firm SPBR, projects that span from the scale of the house to the city. His built work is here accompanied by an excerpt from his doctoral dissertation, which explores how the devices available to architecture-and the sectional manipulation of groundplanes in particular-can mitigate some of the inequities and exclusions built in to the fabric of the contemporary city. An essay by Kenneth Frampton frames these projects within the rich lineage of Brazilian house design and members of the Paulista school such as Paulo Mendes da Rocha and Joao Batista Vilanova Artigas.
