The Unitas Medal was instituted by the President of the Republic of South Africa on November 4, 1994. It was awarded to all ranks who were on the active strength of all seven constituent military forces from April 27, 1994 to May 10, 1994, to commemorate their amalgamation into the South African National Defence Force. It was also awarded to personnel of the British Military Advisory and Training Team which served in South Africa at the time. Mess dress. Ribbon included.

Historian Karen Horn painstakingly tracked down a number of former POWs in which their interviews reveal rich narratives of hardship, endurance, humour, longing and self-discovery. Instead of fighting, these men adapted to another war, one which was fought on the inside of many prison camps. In their interviews, all the POWs expressed surprise at being asked to share their experiences of almost 70 years earlier. They returned home in 1945 to a country which soon afterwards tried its utmost to promote national amnesia with regard to the country’s participation in the war. With great insight and empathy, Karen Horn shines a light on a neglected corner of South African history.  Karen Horn is a lecturer at Stellenbosch University.

It had little to do with the Calvinistic ethics of Christian nationalism that had provided the guidelines for his upbringing as a young Afrikaner.

REALLY INSIDE BOSS: A Tale of South Africas late Intelligence Service (And Something about the CIA) PC Swanepoel Authors Foreword: This book was initially conceived of as nothing else but a commentary on James Sanders' APARTHEIDS FRIENDS THE RISE AND FALL OF SOUTH AFRICA'S SECRET SERVICE which appeared in 2006. Its name was suggested by INSIDE BOSS, a book written 25 years earlier and copiously made use of by Sanders. For one reason or another commentary seemed to end up as something else. I felt called upon to undertake this task. Having served in the National Intelligence Service and its predecessors for more than 34 years, my colleagues and I never considered ourselves "Apartheid's Friends". Most of us were opposed to "petty apartheid". We tried to be apolitical and objective. It is true that I saw merit in what came to be called "grand apartheid", the ideal of a Federation of Southern African States,  in which my own people, the Afrikaners, would control their own (albeit a small) portion or portions of the country. I even propounded, in print in 1965, the creation of a homeland for whites. Later I was to replace "whites with "Afrikaners defined as "Afrikaans speaking people, irrespective of their race, colour or creed". (This switch to a more inclusive world-view occurred before I discovered that I was a descendant of Eva Krokoa, the Khoekoen (or Hottentot) girl, who grew up, (circa 1655) in Jan Van Riebeeck's house in Cape Town!) In a sense this book also sets out to highlight the role played covertly against the previous South African government by Western, as against communist forces.  Curiously enough, there appears to be reluctance on the part of British and American commentators to deal with this issue. The book is not a literary work. English is not the writer's first language. The reason why it was written in English was to enable the James Sanders of this world to read it. Numerous and often lengthy verbatim quotations are included. The sources are identified in the script and not in footnotes Pretoria, May, 2007.

One of the Car Clubs founder members became a rally driver of international repute and won a sponsored drive in the Monte Carlo Rally.  Other members competed successfully in local and national rallies and also in motor racing events in Bulawayo and Salisbury.  We have identified as many members as we could of both the Salisbury and the Bulawayo clubs together with all the photographs we could locate. From editions of the Outpost we gleaned stories not only of the car club and its activities but also of other motoring matters relating to the Force. From these and former members contributions, plus over 350 photographs, we have put together a collection of stories, all of which have a common thread running through them a vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine.   New material includes many previously unpublished photographs, coverage of Police displays, the Queen Mary mobile canteens, a selection of vehicle advertisements from The Outpost, a look at the time when BSAP members were also Firemen and also a write-up on the BSAP Reserve Reconnaissance Unit, a body of men whose esprit-de-corps was second to none, and their Marmon-Herrington armoured cars.   On auction is a rare miniature Order of the Star of South Africa: Grand Cross, post nominal letters SSA. The Star is marked "S925" These were bestowed on civilians for excellent meritorious service which made a lasting contribution to the security and general national interest of South Africa. The Order of the Star of South Africa was instituted on 1 July 1975 and conferment of the decoration was discontinued on 6 December 2002.
