2004 Gold 1/4oz R2 Drakensberg   Heritage Series Drakensberg Mountains runs from Dordrecht in the Eastern Cape all the way through to Tzaneen in Mpumalanga. To the Voortrekkers, it resembled a chain of angry, unyielding dragons. To the Zulu nation, it is uKhahlamba, the Barrier of Spears. The uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park has exceptional natural beauty in its soaring basaltic buttresses, incisive dramatic cutbacks, and golden sandstone ramparts. Rolling high altitude grasslands, the prestine steep sided river valleys and rocky gorges also contribute to the beauty of this World Heritage Site.   Mintage 750 Generic Images

2008 Mahatma Ghandi 1/10oz Gold Proof   The Protea coin series commemorates various aspects and important events in the history of South Africa. The 2008 Protea Coin Series will feature Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi – better known as Mahatma Gandhi (1869 – 1948). Mahatma Gandhi lived in South Africa from April 1893 to July 1914 Although not South African by birth, he said “I was born in India, but I was made in South Africa”. He said these words because he first started with his campaign of “Ahimsa” (non-violence) and “Satyagraha” (way of truth) while he was campaigning for freedom in South Africa.   Gandhi influenced both nationalist and internationalist movements and brought the cause of India’s independence from British colonial rule to world attention. Gandhi’s principle of satyagraha (from Sanskrit satya: truth, and graha: grasp/hold), has also inspired other democratic activists, including Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lennon and the 14 th Dalai Lama.   The title of “Mahatma” (Sanskrit term of reverence “mahatma” meaning “one of great soul”) was accorded on Gandhi in 1915 by his admirer Rabindranath Tagore (the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature). It was given in response to Gandhi conferring the title of “Gurudev” Hindus and Muslims in India made Gandhi a target and he was shot and killed on 30 th  January 1948 by a Hindu extremist. It is ironic that this great pacifist, the first to employ non-violence in a political context, was never awarded the Nobel Peace Prize! The 1960 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Chief Albert Luthuli from South Africa, applied Gandhi’s principles while fighting apartheid South Africa. The profound lessons Gandhi leant that South Africa, spurned him to stand-up and without violence fight for his beloved India, earning him the title of “Father of the Nation”

South Africa played a major part in the creation of the Rugby World Cup. However, due to international sanctions, we were not allowed to participate in the first two events, held in 1987 and 1991. South Africa was allowed to host and participate in the Rugby World Cup in 1995, it changed the world. Nelson Mandela believed that the sport had the power to unite a nation and he chose the 1995 tournament as the global stage to showcase a new Rainbow Nation. Donning the famous number 6 Springbok jersey, Mandela handed Francois Pienaar the Webb Ellis Cup, effectively uniting a deeply divided country and establishing South Africa as a true world player. The 1/2oz Mandela SA Rugby Medallion Set was released to honour the Springboks, our Rugby World Cup Champions of 1995 and 2007.    This rare gold and silver rugby set was minted by the Mint of Norway and has a limited mintage of 2011.    The 1/2oz Mandela SA Rugby Set consists of 2 medallions:   1/2oz gold Mandela medallion 1oz silver Mandela medallion

James Bray, an English colonial administrator who was expelled from a central African nation for siding with its black nationalist leaders, is invited back ten years later to join in the country's independence celebrations. As he witnesses the factionalism and violence that erupt as revolutionary ideals are subverted by ambition and greed, Bray is once again forced to choose sides, a choice that becomes both his triumph and his undoing.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The group started thirty years ago with one store in the quirky suburb of Yeoville and has grown through the years to a total of five shops, plus our online sales. Bookdealers is well-known for its collectable and used books. We also have a large variety of remaindered books sourced from around the world.  If you collect from one of our five branches there is no delivery charge.   1965 Rhodesian Independence Anniversary Gold Medallion In 1965, Rhodesia (later Zimbabwe) was a British colony which, fearful of black majority rule being imposed upon them by the British, made a unilateral declaration of independence under the leadership of Ian Smith, in an attempt to ensure that Rhodesia remained under white minority rule. This action was condemned by Britain and most of the rest of the world as illegal and refused to recognise the newly independent nation. This lack of official recognition and the constant pressure of black insurgents fighting for black majority rule eventually led to the collapse of Smith’s Rhodesia, with the Lancaster House Agreement signed in 1979 leading to the temporary re-establishment of British rule preceding the re-emergence of independence with black majority rule in 1980, whereupon the country was renamed ‘Zimbabwe’ It weighs 11.46 grams Obverse Ian Smith surrounded by legend:- RHODESIA 1965 Reverse Kariba Dam and legend:- INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY 1966
