At the time of your arrival in this universe, a gigantic central computer known as Ix presides over the city of Omikron. In its virtually infinite memory are concentrated all of the data from the entire galaxy, collected by its numerous sensors. Using this information, Ix is better able to manage the interests of the human race. But Astaroth, prince of the demons, has bigger plans. He secretly seizes the Ix computer and swears his revenge. He vows to conquer not only this planet, but also spread his reign over the entire universe, to avenge himself of those who chased him away. Review Omikron: The Nomad Soul thrusts you into a bustling metropolis, in a body that is not your own, on a quest that has not yet been revealed. It is a vast role-playing game pitting good and evil against one another in a battle for the souls of humankind. You arrive in the city of Omikron and your job is to research who you are (since your soul has been transported into another body) and why your partner, Den, has died. Through exploring the districts of Omikron for clues--and battling monsters in predictable fight scenes--you discover the truth about Den's death, mysterious serial killings and demons that haunt Omikron. The action scenes are thrilling, but more complicated than necessary. Each type of fighting requires new keystrokes, leaving you to think more than react to your opponent. The first-person shooting scenes are hard to master in using both mouse and keyboard to dodge, crouch, shoot and run. The hand-to-hand combat is much more exciting, and easier to manoeuvre. The graphics are wonderful but require the recommended system to fully enjoy the depth of the city of Omikron. Your interaction with the objects and people are not as sophisticated as you would expect. You find your character often saying things like "Why am I doing this?" and "I don't need to do that," when you want him to either pick up the object or ignore it. The interaction with other characters is similarly limited. For example, when approaching many of the female characters, you only check out their bodies and can't learn information they could give you. Similar plot issues may make you wonder about the teen rating, since women in the future seem destined to wear pasties and hot pants. It is almost as if Quantic Dream took on a little too much in creating Omikron: The Nomad Soul. The scope of what could be RPG fans wanting to take a risk may find this combination-format game as intriguing as the mysterious world it's based on. -- Madeleine Miller

There are 12 levels to garrotte, sneak, disguise, shoot and bomb your way through, and these take you through various cities world-wide with a stop-off in the jungle for good measure. The control method is mastered after a while, and though you can redefine your own keys the default number pad block of a PC keyboard is hard to fault. The programmers' attention to detail is captured by the graphics--it's hard not to be impressed the first few times 47 pushes his way past a hanging drape and it flutters for real--and the excellent in-game music adds to the atmosphere. Stop to admire the scenery at the wrong time, however, and you will witness the Chinese action-style fade to white deathscene once too often. The title reveals the inevitable 15 rating--though the blood's not heavy enough to warrant a real BBFC 15, just the ELSPA recommendation. Hitman is not a first-person 3-D shooter, nor a totally stealth-oriented sneaker like the Thief series, and it's as if the control method was made complex enough to distinguish it from both genres. With no in-game save, it's hard work but makes the game longer than 12 levels sound, with a real sense of achievement when you finally succeed. Review While Acclaim obviously hopes to launch a new character into the video game pantheon with Vexx, it would be wrong to expect another cuddly sprite who would be at home in a Looney Tunes cartoon. There is something decidedly twisted about Vexx. It might have something to do with his witnessing of the murder of his grandfather. After discovering hidden Astani war talons--which permanently attach to Vexx's arms--he is charged with avenging his grandfather's death, freeing his fellow villagers from slavery and ridding the universe of the evil Dark Yabu. Playing as Vexx, you collect Wraith hearts. By gathering their energy, you power up the central hub that in turn opens doors to different worlds--from ice-encrusted wastelands and lush forests to hilly deserts and underwater oases. The graphics and music in each new world and in the many miniworlds hidden within are often breathtaking. At times, you easily become distracted, taking a break from world-saving responsibility to hop into a pool for a swim or perch on top of some pole just to get a good look around. The controls are fairly straightforward, although occasionally a near-impossible move sequence is needed to propel Vexx up to the next wobbling platform. The puzzles that lead to each heart can be challenging, if not downright frustrating, but there are enough available that you can always go and play somewhere else. There are 81 hearts scattered throughout the game, but only 60 are required to fight Dark Yabu. The creatures in each world are easy to slaughter and only a nuisance if they attack at the wrong time or en masse. Those seeking more of a challenge can hop onto the sundial in each level and twist it from day to night.
