This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Over the centuries, natural history museums have evolved from being little more than musty repositories of stuffed animals and pinned bugs, to being crucial generators of new scientific knowledge. They have also become vibrant educational centers, full of engaging exhibits that share those discoveries with students and an enthusiastic general public. At the heart of it all from the very start have been curators. Yet after three decades as a natural history curator, Lance Grande found that he still had to explain to people what he does. This book is the answer and, oh, what an answer it is: lively, exciting, up-to-date, it offers a portrait of curators and curation like none we've seen, one that conveys the intellectual excitement and educational and social value of curation. Grande uses the personal story of his own career most of it spent at Chicago's storied Field Museum to structure his account as he explores the value of collections, the importance of public engagement, changing ecological and ethical considerations, and the impact of rapidly improving technology.Throughout, we are guided by Grande's keen sense of mission, of a job where the why is always as important as the what. Beautifully written and richly illustrated, this clear-eyed but loving account of the natural history museum and its place in our cultural and conservation landscape will appeal to fans of dusty dioramas and digital displays alike. Features Summary Over the centuries, natural history museums have evolved from being little more than musty repositories of stuffed animals and pinned bugs, to being crucial generators of new scientific knowledge... 2014. Soft cover. 34 pages. Very good condition; like new.  Under 1kg. A thought-provoking Cape Town exhibition, Design & Making [the story of food], traces the evolution of craft and design through food - in particular, the vessels used for its preservation, storage, packaging and distribution. The exhibition, at the Castle of Good Hope from 12 May-12 October 2014, is a collaboration between the Cape Craft & Design Institute (CCDI) and Iziko Museums of South Africa’s Social History Collections Department. It is an official Cape Town World Design Capital 2014 project (#461). Installations reveal how the story of food preservation, storage and packaging over time is vast and complex. From using found objects such as ostrich eggs and gourds, and objects made from clay, wood, grass and other materials, we now store food in freezers, plastic, cardboard, glass and vacuum-packaging. And while we still have the same food types such as grains and cereals, in our current era there is a proliferation of ‘created’ foodstuffs such as energy drinks and same-size fruit and vegetables. The exhibition story is told through installations and objects: a large group of historic African, European and Asian objects sourced from Iziko’s Collections stands alongside 30 contemporary objects created by designer-makers from the Western Cape. There are also examples of modern packaging. The curators are independent consultants Rayda Becker and June Hosford, Esther Esmyol and Wieke van Delen (Iziko Museums), Vikki du Preez (Cape Peninsula University of Technology); it was project managed by Marjorie Naidoo (CCDI) and exhibition designer Aidan Bennetts.

Collecting captures the past in a way useful to the present and the future. Exhibits play to our senses and orchestrate our impressions, balancing presentation and preservation, information and emotion. Curators consider visitors' interactions with objects and with one another, how our bodies move through displays, how our eyes grasp objects, how we learn and how we feel. Inside the Lost Museum documents the work museums do and suggests ways these institutions can enrich the educational and aesthetic experience of their visitors.Woven throughout Inside the Lost Museum is the story of the Jenks Museum at Brown University, a nineteenth-century display of natural history, anthropology, and curiosities that disappeared a century ago. The Jenks Museum's past, and a recent effort by artist Mark Dion, Steven Lubar, and their students to reimagine it as art and history, serve as a framework for exploring the long record of museums' usefulness and service.Museum lovers know that energy and mystery run through every collection and exhibition. Lubar explains work behind the scenes--collecting, preserving, displaying, and using art and artifacts in teaching, research, and community-building--through historical and contemporary examples. Inside the Lost Museum speaks to the hunt, the find, and the reveal that make curating and visiting exhibitions and using collections such a rewarding and vital pursuit. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days It was more than just a wall: it was a whole military zone designed to control movement across the northern frontier of the Roman province of Britannia. Great earthwork barriers survive, along with the remains of forts and temporary camps; watch-towers and fortified gates; civilian settlements, temples, cemeteries, bath-houses, roads and bridges. Stretching across the spine of England from the North-East coast to the Irish Sea, the line of the frontier extends for over 100 miles through every type of landscape: from the streets of urban Tyneside, through arable fields; along the crags of the wild Whin Sill; to the sands of the Solway, and down the coast of Cumbria. Drawing upon the extensive expertise and unrivalled archives of English Heritage, and those of its partners, this map depicts the fruits of modern archaeological research: in field survey, geophysics, excavation, and the analysis of aerial photographs. Using Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 data - the ideal scale for walkers - this revised new map shows with great clarity all the elements of Hadrian's Wall, and distinguishes between those features that are visible and those that have been levelled through time. A brief text explains the remains on the ground, and how to use the map to find them - including the museums and the best places to visit. This World Heritage Site is now more accessible than ever before, so see the landscape through new eyes. Features Summary Using Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 data - the ideal scale for walkers - this new map shows with great clarity all the elements of Hadrian's Wall, and distinguishes between those features that are visible and those that have been levelled through time. "Martin Parr: Grand Paris" collects more than 40 of Parr's photographs, most of which are previously unpublished, that range from newly conceived images to the iconic and the oldest of Parisian cliches. Since 1999, he has been creating sculptures in classic white marble of subjects who lack one or more limbs; the best known is his 2005 Trafalgar Square installation, "Alison Lapper Pregnant." In addressing the purely physical aspects of life, Quinn confronts the viewer with the gaping chasm between the physical and the mental, beauty and ugliness, the eternal and the mortal. His work has been presented and acquired by leading galleries and museums around the world and was recently the subject of an exhibition at Mary Boone Gallery in New York. This overview of recent developments also includes a history of his career and documentation of all major works. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Nearly half a century after the defeat of the Third Reich, Nazism remains a subject of extensive historical inquiry, general interest, and, alarmingly, a source of inspiration for resurgent fascism in Europe. Goodrick-Clarke's powerful and timely book traces the intellectual roots of Nazism back to a number of influential occult and millenarian sects in the Habsburg Empire during its waning years. These sects combined notions of popular nationalism with an advocacy of Aryan racism and a proclaimed need for German world-rule. This book provides the first serious account of the way in which Nazism was influenced by powerful millenarian and occult sects that thrived in Germany and Austria almost fifty years before the rise to power of Adolf Hitler. These millenarian sects (principally the Ariosophists) espoused a mixture of popular nationalism, Aryan racism, and occultism to support their advocacy of German world-rule. Over time their ideas and symbols, filtered through nationalist-racist groups associated with the infant Nazi party, came to exert a strong influence on Himmler's SS. The fantasies thus fueled were played out with terrifying consequences in the realities structured into the Third Reich: Auschwitz, Sobibor, and Treblinka, the hellish museums of Nazi apocalypse, had psychic roots reaching back to millenial visions of occult sects. Beyond what the TImes Literary Supplement calls an intriguing study of apocalyptic fantasies, this bizarre and fascinating story contains lessons we cannot afford to ignore. Features Summary This work traces the intellectual roots of Nazism back to a number of influential occult and millenarian sects in the Hapsburg Empire during its waning years...
