Book still in a good used condition.  >>>   Ange wrote " The 13th in the series is a lucky one for James Qwilleran.  Having fulfilled his 5 years living in Pickax as required by the will, he is now the sole and rightful heir in full possession of the billion dollar Klingenschoen fortune, and free to go wherever he wants.  Now he has a decision to make – what’s next?  Does he stay on in Moose County?  Move back to a big city?  Buy a newspaper?  Write a book?    Jim has recently heard about the unspoiled beauty of the Big Potato mountains, and he feels that this would be a perfect destination to get away from it all and think about his future. He loads Koko and YumYum and the infamous “turkey roaster that serves as their commode” into his clunker car and off they go to the Tiptop Inn, the only place he can find that will allow cats. He’s not renting a room, he’s renting the entire inn, which is empty and for sale. Koko begins acting strangely as soon as they move in and it turns out – surprise – that the inn was the site of a murder. Qwill soon suspects that the wrong man was convicted of the crime." ·         *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me on the same day you only pay R 6 extra postage for each of the additional books -   See what else I have to offer, it might just be worth your while.

Not content with the often dry tone of academic writing, the author engages a "wayfaring" process that brings together theories of sound, animal, and posthumanist studies in order to change the ways we think about and act with the assemblages of living creatures, things, places, and histories around us.Neumark evokes both the literal -- the actual voices within the works she examines -- and the metaphorical -- in a new materialist exploration of voice encompassing human, animal, thing, and assemblages. She engages with artists working with animal sounds and voices; voices of place, placed voices in installation works; voices of technology; and "unvoicing," disturbances in the image/voice relationship and in the idea of what voice is. She writes about remixes, the Barbie Liberation Organisation, and breath in Beijing, about cat videos, speaking fences in Australia, and an artist who reads (to) the birds. Finally, she considers ethics and politics, and describes how her own work has shaped her understandings and apprehensions of voice. And through the two-and-a-half centuries of its remarkable life, GKN has proved a master of Industrial Evolution. From a single blast furnace fuelling a tiny iron works on a remote Welsh hillside, GKN was built by a group of men - and one woman - into a world leader. Not just once or twice, but many times, it has changed shape and direction to hold its place at the forefront of the engineering industry. When iron gave birth to the worldwide railway boom in the early 1800s, GKN was there. It was among the first to seize the opportunities created when steel superseded iron in the 1860s. After the First World War, GKN moved into the 20 th century's greatest new industry - automotive. Late in the century, when aerospace began to be transformed by the use of new materials, GKN was at the leading edge. Geographically too, the company has evolved. As the balance of economic growth has shifted, from Britain in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries to America, continental Western Europe and Japan in the 20 th and on to the emerging powers of Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe in the 21 st century, the group has moved with it and frequently ahead of it. Today, the businesses that comprise GKN reach from the US to the eastern shores of Japan, from northern China and India to South Africa, Latin America and Australia. GKN is a truly global corporate citizen. This is its remarkable story. Features Summary The company that became GKN was forged in the first fires of the Industrial Revolution. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Born in Stockport, William Garbutt was a reasonably successful winger with Blackburn Rovers, having first played for Woolwich Arsenal, when injury finished his career at the age of 29.He was good enough to have played for the Football League against the Scottish League. The usual route for ex-professionals was to become a publican but in 1912 Garbutt moved to Italy and took charge of Genoa Cricket and Football Club. In doing so he became the first professional football manager in Italian football. His professionalism and revolutionary ideas had a great impact on the club and under his guidance Genoa won the Italian League Championship three times - in 1915, 1923 and 1924. Garbutt is still considered an icon in Genoese football circles and is the reason why, to this day, Italian players call their manager 'Mister'. In 1927 he joined the newly formed AS Roma and guided them to a cup win in his first season. He then moved to Napoli for six seasons, taking them to third position in the league - the highest spot they had ever enjoyed and which they only bettered many years later. Garbutt repeated his remarkable success on moving to Spain in 1935, where he guided Athletic Bilbao to the championship of the Spanish League before returning to his first love, Genoa, shortly afterwards. As a British citizen he was an exile under Mussolini's fascists and was interned in Imola when his wife was killed by American bombing. He returned to England in the late 1940s and died in 1964 in Warwick. Author Paul Edgerton traced his adopted daughter Maria for a unique insight into an extraordinary man. First edition, Simon & Schuster, 2008 - Cowboys - 203 pp. Colton H. Bryant grew up in Wyoming and never once wanted to leave it. Wyoming loved him and he loved it back. Two things helped Colton get through school and the neighbourhood bullies: his best friend Jake and his favourite mantra: Mind over matter -- which meant to him: if you don't mind, it don't matter. Colton and Jake grew up wanting nothing more that the freedom to sleep out under the great Wyoming night sky, and to be just like Jake's dad, Bill, a strong, gentle man of few words who can ride rodeo like nobody's business. When Colton started work as a driller on a rig, despite his young wife begging him to quit, he claimed it was in his blood. Colton did die young and he died on the rig -- falling to his death because the oil company neglected to spend the $2,000 on safety rails. His family received no compensation. The strong, sad story of Colton H. Bryant's life could not be told without the telling of the land that grew him, where there are still such things as cowboys roaming the plains, where it is relationships that get you through and where a simple, soulful and just man named Colton H. Bryant lived and died. About the author  (2008) Alexandra Fuller was born in England in 1969. In 1972, she moved with her family to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Forest rangers had assembled nearly ten thousand men--college boys, day workers, immigrants from mining camps--to fight the fire. But no living person had seen anything like those flames, and neither the rangers nor anyone else knew how to subdue them. Egan narrates the struggles of the overmatched rangers against the implacable fire with unstoppable dramatic force. Equally dramatic is the larger story he tells of outsized president Teddy Roosevelt and his chief forester, Gifford Pinchot. Pioneering the notion of conservation, Roosevelt and Pinchot did nothing less than create the idea of public land as our national treasure, owned by and preserved for every citizen. Sabrina Mahfouz, Guardian, Best Summer Books 2018 Mukesh has just moved from Kenya to the drizzly northern town of Keighley. He was expecting fame, fortune, the Rolling Stones and a nice girl, not poverty, loneliness and racism. Still, he might not have found Keith Richards, but he did find the girl. Neha is dying. Lung cancer, a genetic gift from her mother and an invocation to forge a better relationship with her brother and her widowed father before it's too late. The problem is, her brother is an unfunny comedian and her idiot father is a first-generation immigrant who moved to Keighley of all places. Rakesh is grieving. He lost his mother and his sister to the same illness, and his career as a comedian is flat-lining. Sure, his sister would have claimed that it was because he was simply unfunny, but he can't help feel that there is more to it than that - more to do with who he is and where he comes from rather than the content of his jokes. Ba has never looked after her two young grandchildren before. After her daughter died, her useless son-in-law dumped them on her doorstep for a month and now she has to try and work out how to bond with two children who are used to England, not to the rhythms of Kenya... (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) With an introduction by Robert Macfarlane Shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize and winner of the Hawthornden Prize. I had attached myself to the birds. I couldn't move on until the birds moved on, and the birds couldn't move on without the spring. One winter, after an enforced period of recuperation, William Fiennes finds himself restless and yearning for adventure. He travels to Texas, where he begins a quest to trace the million-strong flocks of snow geese making their spring flight thousands of miles north to the Arctic tundra. On his epic journey he meets people from every walk of life, from ex-nuns to train fanatics, and their stories resound with the longing to arrive at the right place in the world. Shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize and winner of the Hawthornden Prize, The Snow Geese is a poignant and lyrical paean to the richness and wonder of the world around us. A unique blend of autobiography, travel and nature writing, this is a classic tale of belonging and the inescapable lure of home. Format:Paperback Pages:256

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days WINNER of the 2013 Katharine Briggs Award This book uses the nineteenth-century legend of Spring-Heeled Jack to analyse and challenge current notions of Victorian popular cultures. Starting as oral rumours, this supposedly supernatural entity moved from rural folklore to metropolitan press sensation, co-existing in literary and theatrical forms before finally degenerating into a nursery lore bogeyman to frighten children. A mercurial and unfixed cultural phenomenon, Spring-Heeled Jack found purchase in both older folkloric traditions and emerging forms of entertainment. Through this intriguing study of a unique and unsettling figure, Karl Bell complicates our appreciation of the differences, interactions and similarities between various types of popular culture between 1837 and 1904. The book draws upon a rich variety of primary source material including folklorist accounts, street ballads, several series of "penny dreadful" stories (and illustrations), journals, magazines, newspapers, comics, court accounts, autobiographies and published reminiscences. The Legend of Spring-Heeled Jack is impressively researched social history and provides a fascinating insight into Victorian cultures. It will appeal to anyone with an interest in nineteenth-century English social and cultural history, folklore or literature. Karl Bell is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Portsmouth. Features Summary An intriguing study of a unique and unsettling cultural phenomenon in Victorian England. Ruud's personal life is a disaster - the whole world seems to know that his wife has left him for another man, perhaps because his (ex) mother-in-law keeps on turning up at his office with food for him. The only bright spot on Ruud's horizon is the imminent arrival of Imke Sneijder from Amsterdam, whom he hasn't seen for fifteen years, when they were both twelve-year-old neighbours before her family moved back to Holland. As Ruud and his department investigate the crime and the others that follow, he begins to realise that the current murderous spree may be linked to events which occured fifteen years ago, at about the time Imke left Indonesia... On a double date where the couples actually did some star gazing, Barbree recognized that exploring space would become one of the most important stories of the century. Convinced that one day astronauts would walk on the moon, Barbree moved to the then sleepy ocean-side community of Cocoa Beach, right outside Cape Canaveral, and began reporting on rockets that soared, exploded, and fizzled. In the decades to come he witnessed a parade of history as space pioneers, hucksters, groupies and politicians participated in the greatest show of technology the world had ever seen. In "Live from Cape Canaveral", Barbree offers his unique perspective on the space program. Warm and perceptive, he reminds us just how thrilling the great moments of the space race were and why America fell in love with its heroic, sometimes larger-than-life astronauts. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Wogamatter by Esther Lawson is a compelling tale of a small mixed-race girl, growing up in post-war Britain, and her experiences of racism in all its forms from all quarters of society. A sad story, but one with a real moral at its heart, no reader will fail to be moved by the author's account of her life as a young child and developing teenager. Wogamatter is recounted through the eyes of a child, allowing the reader to feel keenly the bewilderment and confusion of someone persecuted for the way they look. The early narrative throws the naive optimism of a young child into sharp contrast with the abject misery she is subjected to. We are born into the Human Race, however there are no guarantees that you will be accepted; to obtain acceptance is a fight against an automatic classification of colour, rendering you as second class to our counterparts. No law in nature demanded any difference, we are all one. Features Summary Wogamatter by Esther Lawson is a compelling tale of a small mixed-race girl, growing up in post-war Britain, and her experiences of racism in all its forms from all quarters of society. I feel very deeply that this book must be written. And no one else, I repeat, can write it."--William S. Burroughs Edie Parker was eighteen years old when she met Jack Kerouac at Columbia University in 1940. A young socialite from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, she had come to New York to study art, and quickly found herself swept up in the excitement and new freedoms that the big city offered a sheltered young woman of that time. Jack Kerouac was also eighteen, attending Columbia on a football scholarship, impressing his friends with his intelligence and knowledge of literature. Introduced by a mutual friend, Jack and Edie fell in love and quickly moved in together, sharing an apartment with Joan Adams (who would later marry William S. Burroughs). This is the story of their life together in New York, where they began lifetime friendships with Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, and others. Edie's memoir provides the only female voice from that nascent period, when the leading members of the Beat Generation were first meeting and becoming friends. In the end, Jack and Edie went their separate ways, keeping in touch only on rare occasions through letters and late-night phone calls. In his last letter to Edie, written a month before his death, Kerouac ended it with the encouraging phrase: "You'll be okay." It was from that note that the title of this book was taken. Features Summary Jack Kerouac's first wife gives an insider's view of the nascent Beat Generation.
