It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days In the first half of the nineteenth century, Southern Africa was a jumble of British colonies, Boer republics and African chiefdoms, a troublesome region of little interest to the outside world. Into this frontier world came the Reitz family, Afrikaner gentry from the Cape, who settled in Bloemfontein and played a key role in the building of the Orange Free State. Frank Reitz, successively chief justice and modernising president of the young republic, went on to serve as State Secretary of the Transvaal Republic. In 1899, he stood shoulder to shoulder with President Paul Kruger to resist Britain's war of conquest in Southern Africa. At the heart of this tale is the extraordinary life of Deneys Reitz, third son of Frank Reitz and Bianca Thesen. The young Reitz's account of his adventures in the field during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), published as Commando, became a classic of irregular warfare. After a period of exile in Madagascar, he went on become one of South Africa's most distinguished lawyers, statesmen and soldiers. Martin Meredith interweaves Reitz's experiences, taken from his unpublished notebooks, with the wider story of Britain's brutal suppression of Boer resistance. Concise and readable, Afrikaner Odyssey is a wide-ranging portrait of an aristocratic Afrikaner family whose achievements run like fine thread through these turbulent times, and whose presence is still marked on the South African landscape. Free Wheeling Southern Africa's best multi-day MTB trails by Fiona McIntosh, 2011 Imprint:    Sunbird Publishers Ltd Release date:    June 2011 Dimensions:    215 x 155 x 15mm (L x W x T) Format:    Paperback Pages:    184 From short, easy one-night escapes suitable for the whole family, to hard-core mountain adventures that will test even the most experienced, competitive racers, the 34 trails of southern Africa's best multi-day trails and wilderness journeys featured in this book cover the full spectrum of mountain bike tours on offer in South Africa and neighbouring countries. A guide and support vehicle accompanies most of the tours, meaning that someone else takes care of the logistics and you are left free to enjoy the best that mountain biking offers. Whether you want to ride with big game, along empty beaches, through verdant forest or across barren deserts you'll find a trail to suit, and there are also some specialist trails that are aimed at birders, gourmands and culture-vultures. As the waiting lists for the stage races grow (and with them the entry fees) touring offers an alternative way to get your dirt fix - an active holiday with a group of friends or family. After riding the inaugural Tour de Wilderness mountain bike tour, photojournalist Fiona McIntosh tried her hand at stage racing, completing the ABSA Cape Epic in 2007. She's now a social rider who looks forward to a soft bed, good meal and some fine wine after a hard day in the saddle.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days Mountains In The Sea takes the reader on an exploration of The Table Mountain National Park through a visual feast that tells the story of the mountain chain that defines Cape Town, dipping its toe into the ocean at Cape Point at its southern end, rising rugged and varied along its spine, and standing flat-topped and majestic to the north over the city bowl and Table Bay. The book, with a short introductory text by award-winning environmental journalist John Yeld, explains the global biological significance of an area that lies at the heart of the Cape Floristic Region - a World Heritage Site - and that harbours more endemic floral species per square kilometre than any other in the world. In a highly accessible short essay, Yeld traces the struggle to have the park formally established and looks at the challenges it will face in the future. The bulk of the book is a rich photographic journey that is complimented by a few short texts that explore the floral, animal, ecological, geological and social history of the mountain. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days The slaughter of a wagon train of some 120 people in southern Utah on September 11, 1857, has long been the subject of controversy and debate. Innocent Blood gathers key primary sources describing the tangled story of the Mountain Meadows massacre. This wide array of contrasting perspectives, many never before published, provide a powerful and intimate picture of this "dastardly outrage" and its cover-up. A fine addition to the Kingdom in the West Series. The documents David L. Bigler and Will Bagley have collected offer a clearer understanding of the victims, the perpetrators, and the reasons a frontier American theocracy sought to justify or conceal the participants' guilt. These narratives make clear that, despite limited Southern Paiute involvement, white men planned the killing and their church's highest leaders encouraged Mormon settlers to undertake the deed. This compelling documentary record presents the primary evidence that tells the story from its contradictory perspectives. The sources let readers evaluate and track the evolution of such myths as the Paiutes' guilt, the emigrants' provocation of their murderers, Brigham Young's ignorance of what happened, and John D. Lee's sole culpability. Clearly revealed is the part Utah authorities took in blocking the investigation until it became expedient to sacrifice Lee. Together, these narratives show how the massacre's story has been continually distorted and then revealed over 150 years--and how the obfuscation and cover-up continue. "Innocent Blood "conveys the encompassing impact the atrocity had on people's lives, then and for generations after. It is a valuable sourcebook sure to prove indispensable to future research. Some of the country's most famous locations are included, not only Manila and Cebu City of course, but also the island resort of Boracay, the famous rice terraces of Banaue and the mountain capital that is Baguio. Other locations are only lightly visited, places such as the beaches of Pagudpud, Baler and Siquijor, the mountain retreat of Sagada, and the volcanoes of southern Bicol. What they all have in common is that they represent the most exciting sights that the Philippines has to offer, places that are all really worth visiting on any journey through the Philippines. Fynbos Fairies It is for its fynbos fine-leaved, shrub-like vegetation that the southwestern and southern Cape has been named one of the worlds six plant kingdoms: the Cape Floral Kingdom. At less than 90 000 square kilometres,it is the smallest floral kingdom on earth. Yet it is home to 8 600 plant species, some 5 000 of which occur nowhere else in the world.   Fynbos is a mixture of four plant types: protea shrubs, heath-like ericas, reed-like restios and different bubous plants. The Cape Floral Kingdom contains 69 of the worlds 112 proteas, 526 of its 740 ericas and, among bubous plants, 96 of the worlds 160 gladiolus species. Table Mountain alone boasts almost 1 500 fynbos species.   With Fynbos Fairies, Antjie Krog and Fiona Moodie, both of whom regularly walk on the slopes of Table Mountain, pay homage to one of the natural wonders of the world. Inspired by Cicely Mary Barkers  A World of Flower Fairies, Antjie began the process by writing poems that each featured a plant and at least one imaginary little being.   Fiona meticulously researched the features of each plant, insect and little animal depicted in these pages. The fairies and other imaginary beings in these pages are her own creations, but the flowers and creatures she copied from nature.
