Drosera commonly known as the sundews comprises one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants, with at least 171 species around the world. The genus includes annuals and perennials, large and small plants, and denizens of tropical, temperate, and polar habitats. They should not be confused with the ever popular Venus Fly Trap, Dionaea muscipula. These members of the family Droseraceae lure, capture, and digest insects using stalked mucilaginous glands covering their leaf surfaces. The insects are used to supplement the poor mineral nutrition of the soil in which they grow. Both the botanical name and the English common name refer to the glistening drops of mucilage at the tip of each tentacle that resemble drops of morning dew.             Ethnobotanically a tea made from the plant was also used as a tranquilizer and aphrodisiac. Whether indigenous or exotic, Sundews deserve a little corner in all carnivorous plant collections. They make fascinating indoor houseplants. These curiosity plants grow best in pots filled with a mix of Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss, Vermiculite and Horticultural Perlite. They can also be grown in our general Carnivorous Growing Medium. Drosera hilaris commonly known as the Cape Sundew is a South African endemic species found exclusively in the Western Cape Province. Drosera hilaris has an erect unbranched stem and magenta to reddish purple flowers during spring. These plants are from the winter rainfall area of South Africa and the seeds are best sown in autumn. They grow upright, partly from older trailing stems that are densely covered with the old withered drooping foliage.

Passiflora quadrangularis  Seeds Passiflora quadrangularis, also named Passiflora macrocarpa or Giant Granadilla, is a perennial vine, looking much like Passiflora alata, but its flowers are bigger. Native to Central and South America it is grown for its large ornamental fragrant flowers and the large fruits. It climbs by means of clinging tendrils and can be kept as a container plant. The long tendrils need lots of support for climbing. It is a fast growing vine which can grow over 15 meters high. It may be grown as a houseplant in a sunny window. A vigorous tropical vine with large bright green oval leaves, 7-13 cm long, 6-10 cm wide. The stems are quadrangular in shape. One of the loveliest and most exotic of the Passion flowers producing gorgeous purple, white and blue banded fragrant flowers, measuring 8-10 cm across in a long succession from mid-Summer to Autumn. It produces giant green to yellow Passion fruits reaching over one foot in diameter. The pulp is white or greyish and is not as flavourful as the common Passion fruit, but still tasty and often eaten or used in drinks. It rarely produces fruit under greenhouse conditions but makes up for this by the sheer glory of its flowers. Pruning is a must to keep the vine healthy. Prune off less vigorous growth and occasionally prune back vigorous growth to promote flowering. When established, and without care, the passion fruit can easily overtake other garden plants, shading them from sun. Protect from frost or plant in frost free areas. The Giant Granadilla is hardy to 35°F when mature, frost tender when young. Provide ideally a temperature of 15°- 28°C. During the winter the roots should be kept moist, but as growth will be much slower you will probably only need to water once a week, depending on growing temperature. It will do best in a loam based mix with a little peat moss. If their pot is too large or if they have an unrestricted root run then the whole plant will simply get bigger and bigger but it will refuse to flower and therefore produce the fruits. By limiting the pot size you are limiting the ability to grow and this is seen as a threat, so the natural mechanism is to produce seed for the next generation. Only available to South African customers. About I usually release some of my Japanese Red Pine stock at the beginning of summer (seedings) and older plants at the end of the growing season, during winter. These plants have been grown by myself, from seed purchased from reputable sources in Kinashi, Japan thus they are guaranteed to be the species as claimed. My process All 1 year and older stock has been grown from seedling cuttings for the best possible nebari. This also results in a very short stem length till the first actively growing buds making them idea for mame and shohin sized trees which can be grown in a much shorter space of time than the medium and larger size bonsai. Read more about my process here. While plants are in my care they are fed copious amounts of BonsaiBoost, fed weekly alternating with Seagro, Sea Secret and Kelpak to stimulate strong roots. Monthly fungicide treatments are applied, alternating between Copper Oxychloride, Chronos and Unizeb. Packaging Seedlings less than 1 years of age are sold loose, without growing medium in a plastic bag with damp sphagnum moss. Each 1 year and older plant is sold in its container with growing medium, which is watered thoroughly and then plastic wrapped prior to shipping.
