This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days The Mirror dinghy was a significant factor in the boom of dinghy sailing in the 1960s, introducing thousands to the delights of sailing. While sailing has come a long way since then and there have been a lot of far more exotic craft launched, the Mirror remains a fantastic boat in which to learn to sail and to compete at the highest levels. With this second edition, The Mirror Book has been bought into the Start to Finish series format alongside such revered books as The Laser Book and The Topper Book, The Catamaran Book and The Foiling Dinghy Book. Like these titles, this book tells you everything you need to know about sailing the Mirror (whether it be the original gaff-rigged boat or has the newer Bermuda rig). Written for both those starting out through to those striving to win a championship, the book is packed with practical advice and illustrated with step-by-step photographs. It covers: setting up the Mirror and early sailing experiences; developing skills on all points of sailing and with the spinnaker; racing & masterclasses to become a championship winner. Over 180 photographs show you exactly how it's done, and 72 diagrams illustrate key boat parts, the different points of sailing and complex on-the-water scenarios with clarity. It is written by Peter Aitken, formerly the UK National Mirror Coach, who has coached teams to win world championships in the Mirror, Cadet and 420 classes, and Tim Davison, a successful racer and author of countless books on sailing. The UK Mirror Class Association have contributed to this update and it is endorsed by Dave Wade, double Mirror National Champion, who says: "Armed with this book, your understanding of Mirror sailing techniques will grow, and your results will improve. I thoroughly recommend it." Features Summary Learn how to get the most out of the UK's most iconic and best-loved dinghy: for those starting out through to those striving to win a championship. Literacy and Language, publishing in May 2013, is a new programme* that will cover your literacy and language teaching from years 2-6/P3-7. The programme inspires a love of literature through the study of complete texts, with a core structure of grammar skills taught in context and through writing, to ensure children become confident writers with real skills at their command. Each unit offers a multi-layered approach to developing comprehension, vocabulary, writing, critical thinking, spoken language and explicit guidance for teaching grammar skills. The resources for each year are a Teacher's Handbook, a CD-ROM, an Anthology, a Pupils' Book and a Homework Book. Work centres around the texts in the Anthologies, which contain complete stories, poems, play scripts and non-fiction texts written by leading authors including: Michael Morpurgo, Jeremy Strong, Ted Hughes, Jamila Gavin, Geraldine McCaughrean, and Roger McGough Children are introduced to a text through a three layered approach: Story Version 1, 2 and 3. Each version of the story contains more information about the setting, characters and plot. This approach provides children with opportunities to develop an implicit knowledge and deep understanding of the structures of language and of the stories in the Anthologies. A range of reading, writing, speaking and listening and drama activities develop understanding further. Children then see a new text being composed through modelled writing by the teacher, through the planning, oral rehearsing, drafting and editing stages. Supported by the teacher, the children then mirror the process the teacher has modelled, drafting and revising so that they write ambitiously and accurately as they compose their own extended piece of writing. So Literacy and Language ensures that, as the new National Curriculum advises, children learn, through being shown, the skills and processes essential for writing. Grammar concepts are taught in context and through writing so they are meaningful for children. The Software also contains a Grammar Bank - a reference tool for teachers to help them teach grammar with confidence. It covers all the grammar concepts in the National Curriculum from Years 2-6 and includes 'Test yourself' sections, with answers, to help teachers check their understanding. There are also practice tests to prepare children for the Year 6 English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test. A 'Big Question' links the fiction and non-fiction elements, encouraging children to reason, debate and think critically about the texts they read and develop their spoken language skills. The programme will be matched to the new curriculum and the Teacher's Handbooks show clearly how activities link to the programmes of study. *Year 5 and 6 are new editions of a programme previously called Comprehension Plus. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Visions of The Who is a beautifully presented collection of previously unpublished photos of The Who from their golden era with the ultimate line-up of Townshend, Daltrey, Entwistle and Moon. Indeed, all the concert photos within come from the band's last two years of gigs with the inimitable Keith Moon and are from the archive of former Record Mirror photographer Steve Emberton. With the exception of a handful they have all been scanned from the original negatives, specifically for this book and have never been published before. Having spent most of '74 away from the stage whilst working on the film Tommy, the band returned to touring in October '75 in support of their then latest album, The Who By Numbers that also spawned the hit single 'Squeeze Box'. The eleven UK concerts culminated with three shows at Wembley's Empire Pool and Steve Emberton was there at two of them. The following year the band continued to tour in promotion of The Who By Numbers, albeit mainly in America. However they performed three UK concerts in early summer - all outdoor events at football grounds. The first in London at Charlton Athletic's The Valley, went down in Who history as it resulted in the band being declared the loudest in the world as recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records. This was followed by a gig at Celtic Park in Glasgow. Steve Emberton was there again for the third and final gig at The Vetch Field in Swansea. It would prove to be the last paid gig the band performed to a UK audience with Keith Moon in the band and Steve captured it. In addition to this Steve also took photos of both Keith Moon and John Entwistle outside of the gig environment and this collection includes candid photos of the Who's rhythm section in more relaxed settings with the ones of Entwistle taken in West London in November '76 and with his father in August '77 at Ramport Studios. The Keith Moon shots were taken in October or November '77 at Chrysalis Records. Completing the book is a foreword by Tony Klinger, author of the Who tome, Twilight Of The Gods and co-producer of The Kids Are Alright film. Features Summary Visions of The Who is a beautifully presented collection of previously unpublished photos of the original Who by Record Mirror's Steve Emberton. In this tongue-in-cheek guide, illustrated by Heath Robinson's inimitable cartoons and contraptions, there are many charmingly old-fashioned tips for how to succeed in almost all aspects of married life. First published in 1937, this delightful book gives an insight into how the roles of both wife and husband were viewed at the time and pokes gentle fun at them both. The perfect husband presses his own trousers; he can tend the lawn and entertain the baby simultaneously by means of two simple attachments to the garden roller; he can peel onions behind his back, with the help of a mirror, and thus avoid tears; he can make a vacuum cleaner and he even has a device to help him climb the stairs silently after a late night out with the boys. When offered the choice of a glass of milk or a Manhattan, he will choose the former. With chapters on courtship and proposal, the wedding, early married life, bringing up children, sports and hobbies, domestic difficulties and middle age, this book makes a highly amusing gift for those who are considering tying the knot or wish to celebrate wedded bliss.
