Vintage brass coated Naval/ Military hat box with life saving award - R.H. Pringle. I would date this old hat box to the 1930/40s. I think that it may be naval, as it is brass coated, and further that it may be from WW2 (from the materials it is manufactured from). The box also contained an Intermediate Certificate awarded by The Royal Life Saving Society to Robert H. Pringle in February 1935, indicating that he was closely connected to the sea. The box is round with his name plate on the top, and has a hinged lid with a lockable latch on the front. It measures 17cm (high) x 26cm (diameter), and in fair condition for its age - hinge and latch still work, but there is some wear to the brass plate. The certificate is distressed, and needs handling with care. Great buy for the collector of vintage militaria. Shipping note: This item falls into the 1kg - 5kg category (approximately 5kg). What a great find for the Collector of Rare Africana and Militaria or perhaps for the dog lover. The book "Just Nuisance" is affectionately written about the large Great Dane named "Just Nuisance" who became the first dog to serve as an Able Seaman in the Royal Navy of South Africa. The book is a First Edition, printed late 1940's, with hardboard cover which has become unattached from the pages which are stapled together. It measures 19.5x15.5cm, has 36 pages and is illustrated in b/w. There is some scuffing on the corners and some age-related wear. From the Internet: "On 25 August 1939 one of the most unusual Able Seamen ever to serve in the Royal Navy began his service. He was Able Seaman Just Nuisance, on the pay sheet of H.M.S. Afrikander, under the command of Commander C.B.O. Shakespear, RN. In fact this AB was unique - the one and only Great Dane to achieve this rank....." The book is in Port Elizabeth and may be viewed in Lorraine. German WW1 Imperial Commemorative Flyer Badge.    Pilot badge engraved  "Obst H Schnee   BA  1917"   Small logo looks like Paul Meybauer.  Correction on badge, appears a bimetal non magnetic. Pin still has traces of silver plating. A RARE AND SIGNIFICANT FIND!   GIVING YOUR ALLEGIANCE TO A SPECIFIC MESS IN THE BRITISH ROYAL NAVY WAS CONSIDERED A SERIOUS AND STATUS-RELATED AFFAIR - SO MUCH SO THAT MEMBERS WERE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE AND MAINTAIN THEIR OWN DINNERWARE (WITH MESS NUMBER AND USED STRICTLY ONLY BY MEMBERS OF THEIR PARTICULAR MESS). THESE PLATES ARE EXTREMELY RARE AND SOUGHT-AFTER TODAY - SOME HAVING BEEN SALVAGED FROM WRECKS AND NOT OFTEN FOUND DAMAGE-FREE. NOT SURE OF THE MANUFACTURER OF THIS PARTICULAR FLOW BLUE PLATE - HAS THE MARKING 'H&T' IN DOUBLE RINGED OVAL ON BASE AND IS 24.5CM IN DIAMETER.  IT DOES HAVE A FINE HAIRLINE CRACK AND AGE-RELATED CRAZING. DEPICTS THE 'OLD HEAD' OF EDWARD VII AND MADE BETWEEN 1908 AND 1910. A GREAT ACQUISITION FOR AN ANTIQUE  PORCELAIN OR MILITARIA COLLECTOR!  REFER IMAGES
