2014. Soft cover. 34 pages. Very good condition; like new.  Under 1kg. A thought-provoking Cape Town exhibition, Design & Making [the story of food], traces the evolution of craft and design through food - in particular, the vessels used for its preservation, storage, packaging and distribution. The exhibition, at the Castle of Good Hope from 12 May-12 October 2014, is a collaboration between the Cape Craft & Design Institute (CCDI) and Iziko Museums of South Africa’s Social History Collections Department. It is an official Cape Town World Design Capital 2014 project (#461). Installations reveal how the story of food preservation, storage and packaging over time is vast and complex. From using found objects such as ostrich eggs and gourds, and objects made from clay, wood, grass and other materials, we now store food in freezers, plastic, cardboard, glass and vacuum-packaging. And while we still have the same food types such as grains and cereals, in our current era there is a proliferation of ‘created’ foodstuffs such as energy drinks and same-size fruit and vegetables. The exhibition story is told through installations and objects: a large group of historic African, European and Asian objects sourced from Iziko’s Collections stands alongside 30 contemporary objects created by designer-makers from the Western Cape. There are also examples of modern packaging. The curators are independent consultants Rayda Becker and June Hosford, Esther Esmyol and Wieke van Delen (Iziko Museums), Vikki du Preez (Cape Peninsula University of Technology); it was project managed by Marjorie Naidoo (CCDI) and exhibition designer Aidan Bennetts.

A young mother gives birth to a girl in Cape Town's Groote Schuur Hospital. On the Wednesday, 48 hours later, the mother's life is turned upside down when it is discovered that her baby has been stolen. Then, 17 years later, the girl is reunited with her biological family in the most unlikely manner imaginable after she was discovered at school by her younger sister - a split image of herself. This book tells the tale of what is called "an extraordinary story of hope and serendipity" by M-Net's award-winning Carte Blanche programme. It is a story that touched newspaper readers, website visitors, radio listeners and television viewers across the globe: "Such an amazing story," commented Oprah's best friend, Gail King, the co-anchor of This Morning on CBS in America. A Home For Zephany records the tale, as it played out until now, through the voices of the girl's biological parents, Morne and Celeste Nurse, extended family members, neighbours, newspaper archives, Facebook posts, letter and SMS writers, radio and television presenters, politicians, clinical psychologists and journalists. This book also offers a gripping appreciation, growing up on the Cape Flats, by Professor Jonathan Jansen; and an insightful foreword by the renowned actor and playwright, Christo Davids, and afterword by the director of Molo Songololo, Patric Solomns. About the product Number 492 of an edition limited 740 copies, signed by James Walton and the three other contributors. 4to; original blue boards, lettered in gilt on spine and upper cover; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper plan; pp. xi + (i) + 96, incl. index; several maps, monochrome illustrations after contemporary photographs and artwork; line drawings. Dustwrapper and edges slightly rubbed; sporadic, light foxing. Very good condition."The owners of the Josephine Mill were people who played a very important part in the development of Cape Town and South Africa, and two of them, Jacob Letterstedt and Anders Ohlsson, were pioneers in the establishment of the milling and brewing industries in the country. Their activities in the political and social fields were also far-reaching. The book, however, is not confined to the Josephine Mill and its owners. It provides a historical record of every water-mill which existed in Cape Town and vicinity and, as Newlands has always been a centre of the brewing industry, it therefore deals with the growth of that industry at the Cape. Most of the ninety illustrations are line drawings and half-tones which have not been published previously or which have been produced specially for the book. The text similarly includes a great deal of historical information about the Cape, and Newlands in particular, which has not been published before or is to be found in printed sources not readily accessible. It covers a time-span of over three hundred years from the first burgher settlement along the Liesbeek River to the present day." The Josephine Mill and Its Owners. The story of Milling and Brewing at the Cape of Good Hope (James Walton, and others)

A Tapestry of Lives - Cape Women of the 17th Century - June McKinnon - Kwela - Paperback in very good condition. This collection of portraits of women at the Cape brings to life some extraordinary personalities from the early day of the settlement. Cape Town was a wild ofrontier towno, attracting the most desperate, hopeful and intrepid adventurers from the Old World u who both clashed and mingled with the local people. Women had to have extraordinary strength of character to survive at the Cape, facing war, wild animals, slavery, and the stern laws and punishments of the powerful VOC. But women also found opportunity at the Cape: vastly outnumbered by men, they were in great demand u many went through several husbands, as their menfolk succumbed to lion attacks, Khoekhoe assegais or ill health. Although historical background is given, what makes this book different is that it focuses on individual personalities and life stories. These portraits are what make A Tapestry of Women Lives sparkle and distinguish it from more conventional historical texts.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days Past the waterhole at Musmar my spirits started fighting each other again. There were turmoil's of the unknown, beauty versus the hideous, and the passion of going beyond. I closed my eyes and walked fifty paces. There was still nothing on the endless horizon. Then I sat down in the sand and drew a map of Africa - pushing my finger into Cape Town and slowly drawing it along the sand up all Eastern Africa, Ethiopia and in to the Sudan. Then, I thought I saw him, the old Sangoma, there in the Zulu hills holding his puffadder. I moved my finger northward towards Cairo. The sand was hot, but I am sure I could see his smile. Obie Oberholzer began this, his fourth major photographic odyssey, in Cape Town, on the 1st of April 1994. He meandered his way north, across plateaus and plains, through valleys and over mountains up along Africa's eastern side. There were jungles to come and vast deserts and roads that were no longer roads. He travelled the byways through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritria and Sudan to Egypt (via Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel). In the parking lot near the Great Pyramids of Giza, he wiped the dust from his dashboard. The distance read 40,000 kilometres and the time said 9 months and twenty days. This is his story.
