Memoirs of the Extraordinary Military Career of John Shipp, Late a Lieutenant in His Majesty's 87th Regiment [3 Volume Set] Printed 1830. In very good antiquarian condition. R100 postage in SA. 332, 336 and 364 pages. Front board of volume 2 is loose.  John Shipp (March 1784 – 1834) was a British soldier and author best known for his memoirs, which were popular and ran to at least four editions. Shipp began his military career as a drummer boy at the age of ten and twice won commissions from the ranks due to his ability and conduct; he had to sell his first commission due to a lack of funds. He attained the rank of lieutenant in the 87th Regiment. The Times reviewed the third edition of Shipp's memoir in 1890 where the work was listed as one of the "Books Of The Week". The reviewer states that "for a man of little more than 30 to have twice won his commission from the ranks was...an achievement unique in the annals of the British army".

Ranging from rare historical artefacts (such as Marie-Antoinette's pearls) to the weirdly iconic (Elvis's medicine cabinet, anyone?), by turns ingenious, intriguing and witty, this is a brilliant and teasing insight into the culture of our time, packed with extraordinary things to amuse, inspire or amaze.  Itsik Malpesh was born the son of a goose-plucking factory manager during the Russian pogroms; his life saved on the very night it began by the daughter of a butcher. Or so he believes... Exiled during the war, Itsik eventually finds himself in New York, writing poetry to his muse, the butcher's daughter, whom he is sure he will never see again.  But it is here that he is unexpectedly reunited with his greatest love - and later, greatest enemy - with results both serendipitous and tragic. Itsik's story is recounted in his memoirs thanks to the most unlikely of translators, a college student who has embarked upon a lie that will define his future and the most extraordinary friendship he'll ever know. Soft cover, fairly good condition.  Slight signs of wear.  370 pages.
