No surprise then that Mel made his memorable debut on the local music scene in 1998 with a concept show, a rock concert and album. David's Confession evolved from his continuing fascination with winged creatures and man s desire to fly. Strictly speaking, I don t consider it autobiographical in any way, but I do relate to the universal theme of the struggle between good and evil, and the power of music to influence moral choices. It can be employed for good or evil. His first Afrikaans album, Oomblik van Waansin (with a title that is a tribute to Pink Floyds Momentary Lapse of Reason) is a deeply personal and lyrical chronicle of his own journey: It is about the way I grew up, my mom and dad, social influences. In 2001 he won a Geraas Award as the Best Songwriter in Afrikaans for Oomblik van Waansin. Mel's affinity for conceptual stage shows was demonstrated again in 2005 with the musical play Flight of Bird during the Aardklop Arts Festival in Potchefstroom. The production was nominated for an AngloGold Ashanti Smeltkroes Award. Composing soundtracks for movies and television drama has become one of his ways of expressing and stretching himself musically. He has created songs and incidental music for Song for Katryn 2 (with Valiant Swart), The Hitchhiker, Andries Plak, Running Riot with Bill Flynn, Dryfsand and Rainbow Skellums.
