(b) Whilst rendering such service irrespective of the period of service, was injured or killed and was thus prevented from completing the required period of service. 1993 - Amendment to qualifying service was extended to combat terrorism and crime. The following was considered as qualifying service for the award of the medal: Rendering service and completed as part of any military operation within the borders of the Republic of South Africa on service in defence of the Republic or in the prevention or suppression of terrorism or in internal disorder in the Republic or in the preservation of life, health or property or for the maintenance of essential services, including the maintenance of law and order or the prevention of crime in co-operation with the South African Police. A Large Silver Award Medal from the Witwatersrand Agricultural Society. Awarded to H.A. Melle in 1954 for 'Postills Matilda' Champion Large Black Sow or Gilt. Made by the South African Mint. Further information at South African Medals. Sterling silver. Stamped: "STG", "S.A.M" and the date letter F for 1953 at the bottom of the reverse.  Diameter 38.1 mm. Mass 27.5 gm. The Large Black Pig is thought to be almost extinct and in South Africa it is unlikely that any purebred animals still exist.  Note: I am listing another award medal to this Free State breeder of Large Black Pigs.
