As always the game starts with you inheriting a farm and most of the game revolves maintaining and growing your crops of vegetables and herds of animals. You have to work pretty hard at it too, planting crops, watering them and then harvesting them. Animals have to be watered and feed too, eggs collected from chickens, cows milked and sheep shorn. Once youve tired yourself out with your daily chores though theres a whole village to explore around you, as you collect wood to make new buildings or harvest fruit and other rare items to sell at the shop and expand your business. Your main goal in town though is to find yourself a sweetheart and woo her enough so that shell agree to marry you. As fun as all this is though its exactly how the Harvest Moon games have worked since the original SNES game and this version takes almost no advantage of the DS. The touch screen is used merely as an inventory and as a means to pet your animals - other than that its almost entirely superfluous. Even worse, the graphics seem identical to a GBA game and not even a particularly good one at that, with some very poor animation. There are a few new features, such as a mini-casino run by the harvest sprites, but its not nearly enough to tempt you if you have one of the more recent GBA versions. If you havent though, its a reasonable, if unambitious, introduction to the series. HARRISON DENT

Like the original its a sort of Star Wars version of PC hit Battlefield 1942, where two armies face off against each other, either off or online, jumping in and out of various vehicles as they find them. Of course in Battlefield 1942 "various vehicles" meant jeeps and tanks, in Battlefront II it means X-wings, TIE Fighters, AT-ATs and, for the first time, Episode III vehicles like the BARC speeder, Jedi Starfighter II and V-wing. The biggest change to the game, apart from the new vehicles, is space battles with several of the levels taking part aboard giant space cruisers which you can exit in starfighters, have a dogfight in deep space around and then pilot back to for a bit more on foot combat. Levels include the Blockade Runner from the beginning of A New Hope, the space battle above Coruscant and Utapau and Mustafa from Episode III. Another long awaited addition is playable Jedi, although you can only be one for a short time so as to not unbalance the gameplay. Although the emphasis is on online play the single player mode has been beefed up with better artificial intelligence and a proper story linking all the missions. The games real appeal though lies in the huge freedom: play it exactly how you want. Most exciting moment: Using the new combat engine to fight off dozens of enemies, then stealing one of their mounts and riding off into the sunset. Since you ask: Emperor Uriel Septim VII is voiced by Star Trek and X-Men luminary Patrick Stewart, but all the characters in the game have full spoken voiceovers instead of just onscreen text. Just a few quick plays though will turn apathy into addiction. The lowdown: You might come for the budget price but youll stay for the gameplay in what must be the most engrossing new sports game in years. Although the realism is probably going to be beside the point for most people this looks and plays exactly like the real thing. That means the controls basically work like a normal tennis sim, with four basic shot types on the face buttons and some easy to apply aftertouch available on the left stick. You can mix and match shots by holding down multiple buttons and theres a handy warning rumble when you starting getting your returns too near the edge of the table. Although the presentation is a little dry, especially for a Rockstar game, sports games dont get much more fun than this. Most exciting moment: Although its a shame theres no doubles matches the game is still at its best online in multiplayer mode. If you dont have Xbox Live though youll find the computer players are very realistic, with their own quirks and specialities that make them seem far more like real people. Since you ask: The game features seven extra playable characters to unlock by beating the single player tournaments. The nationalities of these players are Brazilian, Irish, German, South Korean, Japanese, English and Egyptian.
