Review If you were looking for a character to associate with Nintendo and the Game Boy, the likelihood is that today you'd say Pokemon--but that hasn't always been the case, and in Super Mario Advance Mario, the once king of Nintendo, is making a comeback on the next-generation Game Boy Advance. Based on the age-old formula of the Super Mario Brothers series, you play the usual host of characters from Mario himself to Princess Peach and even the little mushroom guy. The basic premise is fairly simple: run along the simple platforms, kill the bugs and monsters in your path, and get to the end. It's a game that's very easy to understand, yet not one that's easy to complete, and, like so many games before it, makes you want to come back for more every time. And with over 30 odd levels, it's sure to keep you busy for that time. A great title for all ages, Mario will please grown-ups and children alike as they enjoy the cute graphics and the catchy soundtrack. Review Whereas it took the PS2 about six months to get even one genuine classic game, the doggedly reliable GBA is quietly feathering its nest with barnstormer after masterpiece. Golden Sun is the first proper role-playing game on the portable and it's a stonker. RPG fans will be completely un-shocked to learn that the game centres on a spiky haired hero who discovers that the small town life is not for him and he's actually destined to be the saviour of the universe, or something. Although it's not much of a surprise to discover that the game doesn't shy away from the story cliches of the genre it is perhaps a shame that it sticks so close to the usual gameplay traditions, i.e., random battles, turn-based combat and an over-complex spell system. Still, it does do the old customs proud and the combat sequence look particularly good with a rather spiffing 2ￂﾽ-D graphics system and some great 3-D world map views. The puzzles are also more interesting than the norm, most being Zelda -esque physical puzzles as opposed to the usual super-obvious RPG no-brainers. Mired in sentimental tradition it might be, but Golden Sun is certainly more enjoyable than the po-faced interactive movie that is the modern Final Fantasy game. At the time of writing there's nothing quite like it on the GBA, so it's hard not to recommend it. -- David Jenkins

And while there are times when you can't help feeling that this isn't the most substantial game you've ever played, there is some fun to be had. The idea is simple. You create a singer and take them through the heats and qualifying rounds to the final. If all goes to plan, you get crowned the Pop Idol. If it doesn't, you get to suffer the acid tongues of the three judges, including the infamous Simon Cowell. Clearly, a video game is going to have troubling assessing your vocal talents and that is a downfall. Instead, Pop Idol substitutes a simple rhythm-style game, not a million miles from classics such as Parappa the Rappa. Basically, symbols correlating to your control pad head towards the middle of the screen and you need to have the relevant button pressed at exactly the right moment. The more you get it right, the better you do. You're also assessed on your outfit, which you choose along with your song before every round. It's ultimately quite a simple, straightforward title and one that could have been better, could have been worse.
