Hardback. English. Oxford University Press. 2009. good. Humans are primates, and our closest relatives are the other African apes - chimpanzees closest of all. With the mapping of the human genome, and that of the chimp, a direct comparison of the differences between the two, letter by letter along the billions of As, Gs, Cs, and Ts of the DNA code, has led to the widely vaunted claim that we differ from chimps by a mere 1.6% of our genetic code. A mere hair's breadth genetically! To a rather older tradition of anthropomorphizing chimps, trying to get them to speak, dressing them up for 'tea parties', was added the stamp of genetic confirmation. It also began an international race to find that handful of genes that make up the difference - the genes that make us uniquely human. But what does that 1.6% really mean? And should it really lead us to consider extending limited human rights to chimps, as some have suggested? Are we, after all, just chimps with a few genetic tweaks? Is our language and our technology just an extension of the grunts and ant-collecting sticks of chimps? In this book, Jeremy Taylor sketches the picture that is emerging from cutting edge research in genetics, animal behaviour, and other fields. The indications are that the so-called 1.6% is much larger and leads to profound differences between the two species. We shared a common ancestor with chimps some 6-7 million years ago, but we humans have been racing away ever since. One in ten of our genes, says Taylor, has undergone evolution in the past 40,000 years! Some of the changes that happened since we split from chimpanzees are to genes that control the way whole orchestras of other genes are switched on and off, and where. Taylor shows, using studies of certain genes now associated with speech and with brain development and activity, that the story looks to be much more complicated than we first thought. This rapidly changing and exciting field has recently discovered a host of genetic mechanisms that make us different from other apes. As Taylor points out, for too long we have let our sentimentality for chimps get in the way of our understanding. Chimps use tools, but so do crows. Certainly chimps are our closest genetic relatives. But relatively small differences in genetic code can lead to profound differences in cognition and behavior. Our abilities give us the responsibility to protect and preserve the natural world, including endangered primates. But for the purposes of human society and human concepts such as rights, let's not pretend that chimps are humans uneducated and undressed. We've changed a lot in those 12 million years.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days In 1788, nearly fifteen-hundred people on eleven sailing ships came ashore at Port Jackson in Australia after a gruelling eight month journey from England. This collection of vessels later became known as the First Fleet, and those who sailed in them were the community who established the first European colony in Australia. The Art of the First Fleet depicts the natural history of this extraordinary land, the people and culture of the local indigenous population and the events that marked these initial formative years. The collection, now housed in the Natural History Museum, provides an invaluable record of the wildlife and environment, people and events, as seen through the eyes of the colonists who laid the foundations for the European settlement of Australia. The artists' drawings of the people and culture of the Eora people, the local indigenous population of the area, provide the only lasting visual record of their lives. While images of plants and animals were not always technically accurate, they made a significant contribution to the development of science, allowing experts in Britain to be able to identify and name a large number of new species. They remain an invaluable record of the artists' attempts to make sense and order of this new land. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 24 hours One of the key recommendations of the Review Report of the Task Team that reviewed the NCS curriculum was of prioritising the teaching of English First Additional Language (FAL), and its introduction into the curriculum from Grade 1. Research shows that many schools are delaying the introduction of English until Grade 3, which is the year before learners are expected to learn through English as the medium of instruction. Learners' proficiency in English by the end of Grade 3 is not always sufficient for them to make the transition to English as the language of learning and teaching (LOLT) in Grade 4. Whilst policy states that English should be taught alongside mother tongue from Grade 1, in practice this is not happening. This can be attributed to the emphasis on mother tongue instruction but it is also due to widespread confusion about how additive bilingualism (teaching English and the home language in parallel) is implemented in practice. Teaching English as a First Additional Language: Guidelines for the Foundation Phase provides clear pedagogical steps and curriculum guidance to be used in teaching reading and writing in mother tongue and English in parallel. The book will provide clarity around the differences between home language instruction and the teaching of English as FAL. It will also provide clear support in implementing the policy spelt out in the curriculum documentation.
