Hardback. English. Oxford University Press. 2009. good. Humans are primates, and our closest relatives are the other African apes - chimpanzees closest of all. With the mapping of the human genome, and that of the chimp, a direct comparison of the differences between the two, letter by letter along the billions of As, Gs, Cs, and Ts of the DNA code, has led to the widely vaunted claim that we differ from chimps by a mere 1.6% of our genetic code. A mere hair's breadth genetically! To a rather older tradition of anthropomorphizing chimps, trying to get them to speak, dressing them up for 'tea parties', was added the stamp of genetic confirmation. It also began an international race to find that handful of genes that make up the difference - the genes that make us uniquely human. But what does that 1.6% really mean? And should it really lead us to consider extending limited human rights to chimps, as some have suggested? Are we, after all, just chimps with a few genetic tweaks? Is our language and our technology just an extension of the grunts and ant-collecting sticks of chimps? In this book, Jeremy Taylor sketches the picture that is emerging from cutting edge research in genetics, animal behaviour, and other fields. The indications are that the so-called 1.6% is much larger and leads to profound differences between the two species. We shared a common ancestor with chimps some 6-7 million years ago, but we humans have been racing away ever since. One in ten of our genes, says Taylor, has undergone evolution in the past 40,000 years! Some of the changes that happened since we split from chimpanzees are to genes that control the way whole orchestras of other genes are switched on and off, and where. Taylor shows, using studies of certain genes now associated with speech and with brain development and activity, that the story looks to be much more complicated than we first thought. This rapidly changing and exciting field has recently discovered a host of genetic mechanisms that make us different from other apes. As Taylor points out, for too long we have let our sentimentality for chimps get in the way of our understanding. Chimps use tools, but so do crows. Certainly chimps are our closest genetic relatives. But relatively small differences in genetic code can lead to profound differences in cognition and behavior. Our abilities give us the responsibility to protect and preserve the natural world, including endangered primates. But for the purposes of human society and human concepts such as rights, let's not pretend that chimps are humans uneducated and undressed. We've changed a lot in those 12 million years.

Stone outlines political and social concepts - including such issues as Civil Rights, Women's Rights, the Environment, Obamacare, International relations, and LGBTQ Rights - providing a brief history of each, a refresher on Obama's policies, and an analysis of what Trump's administration might do. Stone then provides an invaluable guide for fighting back - referring to organizations, people, sites, and countless other resources that support positive and possible goals. We donate to charity, buy Fairtrade coffee, or try to cut down on our carbon emissions. Rarely do we know if we're really helping, and despite our best intentions, our actions can have ineffective -- and sometimes downright harmful -- outcomes. Confronting this problem, William MacAskill developed the concept of effective altruism, a practical, data-driven approach which shows that each of us has the power to do an astonishing amount of good, given the right information. His conclusions are often surprising; by examining the charities we give to, the goods we buy and the careers we pursue, Doing Good Better is a fascinating and original guide which shows how, through simple actions, you can improve thousands of lives -- including your own. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 10 working days Critical and creative thinking can make a significant difference to the quality of students' learning. But do we really need to teach children and young people to think, and if so, how should we go about it? The answer to the first part of the question is yes, because the fact of the matter is that although all human beings can think, effective thinking depends on skills and strategies that can be learned. The answer to the second part lies within this book. Schools as thinking communities demystifies thinking and explains how teachers can equip students with the mental tools for success in school and beyond. Schools as thinking communities provides detailed descriptions, illustrated with classroom examples, of the following ways of enhancing thinking: Habits of Mind; CoRT (Cognitive Research Trust) and Six Thinking Hats; P4C (Philosophy for Children); CEA (Cognitive Enrichment Advantage); Thinking Maps; IE (Instrumental Enrichment); TASC (Teaching Actively in a Social Context); and Cooperative Learning. One or more of these might be chosen by a school community as a means to nurture thinking across the curriculum in every classroom, thus encouraging individuals to understand, manage and take responsibility for their own thinking processes, and to value the perspectives of others. Contents include the following: How students and teachers develop as thinkers; The characteristics of a thinking classroom; The process of developing a school as a thinking community; Life skills and inclusion in a thinking community; Challenges facing thinking schools. Schools as thinking communities is aimed at teachers at all levels, curriculum designers, education planners, teacher educators and interested parents. Paperback. English. HarperCollins. 2011. ISBN: 9780007431816. 334pp. In good condition. How can large bonuses sometimes make CEOs less productive? Why is revenge so important to us? How can confusing directions actually help us? Why is there a difference between what we 'think' will make us happy and what 'really' makes us happy? In his groundbreaking book, 'Predictably Irrational,' social scientist Dan Ariely revealed the multiple biases that lead us to make unwise decisions. Now, in 'The Upside of Irrationality,' he exposes the surprising negative and positive effects irrationality can have on our lives. Focusing on our behaviors at work and in relationships, he offers new insights and eye-opening truths about what really motivates us on the job, how one unwise action can become a long-term bad habit, how we learn to love the ones we're with, and more. 'The Upside of Irrationality' will change the way we see ourselves at work and at home--and cast our irrational behaviors in a more nuanced light. Book No: 45892

It's not what happens that makes the difference. How we work with what happens changes everything. The choices we make when we encounter a difficult situation determine the rest of our lives. When we understand what it takes to make skillful choices, we can work with any problem. The book also explores the amazing regenerative powers of the brain, explaining neuroplasticity. As Shapiro learned, new pathways can be developed, demonstrating that no matter our age, we can learn and develop our skills. The book relates a story of discovery, the story of one woman's dawning understanding of the impact of the choices she makes in response to a devastating injury. The lessons Alison conveys are based firmly in Buddhist principles, and the stories she shares are touching and inspiring. They apply to many aspects of our lives, and should have universal appeal while being particularly meaningful to anyone suffering after a stroke. Have you ever wanted to change the world? Authors Gavin and Anne Calver examine our culture and consider where we stand as the Church within it. Drawing on the narrative of Moses, they show how we can be Game Changers. The book is presented in five, provoking sections: * Encounter: like Moses at the burning bush, we must make time to encounter God. * Engage: like Moses with Pharaoh we must engage with our communities and the issues at hand. * Ensemble: We the body of Christ, and everyone plays a vital part. Like Hur, Aaron, Moses and Joshua we will minister most effectively when we do it together. * Equip: how do we hear and respond to what the Lord is doing; listen, see and respond to what the Spirit is saying, and be equipped to go with others, to make a difference. * Empower: Like Moses and Joshua we need to pass on the vision and empower the next generation; who knows, we may never see what we dream of in our generation alone. God is very much at work in the world; He is doing new and different things by the power of His Spirit. The question is; do we want to join Him? If so, it's time to become Game Changers. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 24 hours After a decade in prison for a murder she did not commit, Lulu begins a new life at the Court of St Jerome in the Old Sea City. An albino, abandoned as a young child at a Holding Camp for unwanted children, she has always been ostracised, for her difference to others makes her an easy victim of prejudice. Once, she believed, she had a friend to love her. Then that friend betrayed her and Lulu learned that hate is safer than love. But, from Jamila to Granny Zahra, the people of St Jerome's appear to accept her into their fold. Against a backdrop of never-ending war, the women of the court fight their personal demons: hatred, ambition and greed. As Lulu shares their victories and their losses, she learns to trust again, perhaps even to love. Nothing, however, is as it seems and Lulu discovers that love does not always wear the face of the one you yearn to call beloved. This compelling story explores the sacrifices people make in the pursuit of a love that transcends everyday existence. Lulu's quest, and that of Jamila and Zahra too, is to find the divine love that will fulfil their hopes and save their souls...if they can recognise the masks of those who seek to lead them astray. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is the term that includes Crohn's disease (which can affect any part of the gut) and ulcerative colitis (which affects the colon) - two chronic auto-immune conditions that cause gut pain, whole-body symptoms and poor digestion leading to nutritional deficiencies. Both are on the rise in the developed world and are newly affecting developing economies such as China (where the author was actually diagnosed). The link with the standard Western lifestyle is evident, yet what elements of that lifestyle can be modified to make a difference? And how can sufferers live with symptoms and 'flare ups' that do not respond to treatment and/or lifestyle changes? What is the real-life experience of IBD and what can be done to take back control? Jenna Farmer offers an holistic and positive guide to living with IBD, combining conventional, nutritional, stress reduction and other lifestyle approaches, drawing on her blogs, ebooks and website www.abalancedbelly.co.uk. Throughout, the book is 'illustrated' with case histories from Jenna's blog and other contacts, and from her own experience of delayed diagnosis and listening to her symptoms. Rather than telling the reader which are the 'best' routes, it describes all practicable ascent routes up all the Munros, and rates them in terms of difficulty and quality (using comprehensive grading systems). This enables the reader to make his/her own choices from a range of route options. Providing everything a prospective hill walker could want, The Ultimate Guide to the Munros also makes extensive use of annotated digital photographs and OS maps and includes everything about a route from the amount of effort required to local history, weather conditions and the best tea-rooms in the vicinity. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days This is a book about the things that wise leaders do. It is informed through thousands of conversations with leaders and argues that these leaders do not shy away from the tough stuff. It points to the conditions which these leaders create to allow colleagues to engage with difficult issues enthusiastically and wholeheartedly. It is taken from observations of leaders at work in a variety of settings. While these are mostly schools, these observations are checked against what is happening in wider leadership and management thinking. This book makes the case that any leadership role is concerned primarily with the relationships between individuals. It is the quality of these, whatever the size of the organisation, which make the difference between organisations which thrive, and those which stagnate. This is not to argue for soft, easy and comfortable options. Instead it considers how top leaders manage to walk the line between the impossible and the possible, between the undoable and the doable and to create conditions for productive work which transcend the difficulties which come towards us every day. Instead of dodging them, they embrace them. And by navigating high challenge, low threat, they show how others how to do the same. Features Summary Mary Myatt's standout book shines an uncompromising light on the things that wise school leaders do. Informed through thousands of conversations over a 20-year career in schools...
