This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days Part of what makes our most cherished memories of cricket so special, be it a magisterial innings or an unplayable spell of bowling, is the recollection of where the action took place. Those blazing centuries Barry Richards used to score before lunch; Dennis Compton breaking Jack Hobb's record in 1947 with his 17th hundred of the season; that session by Frank Tyson that was the fastest anyone in the ground had ever witnessed - such moments were special not just because we witnessed them but because of where we witnessed them. In this beautiful book, Chris Arnot goes in search of the most beloved lost cricket grounds up and down Britain. From the county ground at Southampton and the former test match ground at Bramall Lane in Sheffield to the many works grounds that have fallen into disuse in recent decades, the halcyon days of every one are evoked in the reminiscences of players and spectators; as are the sad histories of decline, dereliction and, all too frequently, re-development that followed. Whether it was the old school ground that witnessed a young Wally Hammond test its boundaries, the country house ground that was graced by Ranjitsihji, or a tiny village ground not much more than a bucolic farmer's field, Britain's Lost Cricket Grounds takes the reader on a nostalgic tour of the places great and small that will never host cricket's greats again. Features Summary From county grounds where Denis Compton hit a century to the smallest village field Britain's Lost Cricket Grounds movingly shows how picturesque greenery gave way to shopping malls and housing estates. Author Chris Arnot Publisher Aurum Press Ltd Release date 20141002 Pages 192 ISBN 1-78131-333-4 ISBN 13 978-1-78131-333-6

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 20 - 25 working days Austin Spare was described as the greatest draughtsman in England and was the enfant terrible of the Edwardian art scene but by the time of his death he was living in squalor and all but forgotten. By the 1930s Spare had retreated from fashionable society, living in poverty and obscurity but he never stopped working, only now is his work seen. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 24 hours Sewsunker "Papwa" Sewgolum (1930¿1978) was a South African golfer who carved a niche for himself in golfing folklore when he became the first golfer of colour to win a provincial open in South Africa (in 1963). Sewgolum, a former caddie, with his wrong-way-round grip (left hand beneath his right), beat 103 white golfers in the Natal Open at the Durban Country Club. He became a symbol of the sports boycott movement when pictures of him receiving his trophy outdoors in the rain, because, due to apartheid, he was not allowed to enter the clubhouse, were published across the world. In 1965 he beat Gary Player to win the Natal Open for the second time. He also won the Dutch Open in 1959, 1960 and 1964. However, the dream was to be cut short. At the peak of his career, Papwa was banned by the apartheid government from participating in or attending any PGA tournaments. Crushing him further, they also withdrew his passport, denying him the right to play internationally. This slowly broke his spirit, leaving him with nothing but a dream. This is the story of one man who triumphed again unbelievable odds, only to have his dream snatched from him. Written as fiction, this is a uniquely South African story told by a master storyteller. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days An astonishingly wide-ranging history of Russian nationalism chronicling Russia's yearning for Empire and how it has affected its politics for centuriesIn 2014, Russia annexed Crimea and attempted to seize a portion of Ukraine. While the world watched in outrage, this violation of national sovereignty was in fact only the latest iteration of a centuries-long effort to expand Russian boundaries and create a pan-Russian nation. In Lost Kingdom, award-winning historian Serhii Plokhy argues that we can only understand the merging of imperialism and nationalism in Russia today by delving into its history. Spanning over two thousand years, from the end of the Mongol rule to the present day, Plokhy shows how leaders from Ivan the Terrible to Joseph Stalin to Vladimir Putin have exploited existing forms of identity, warfare and territorial expansion to achieve imperial supremacy. A strikingly ambitious book, Lost Kingdom chronicles the long and belligerent history of Russia's empire and nation-building quest.
