It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days In several decades as a distinguished classical pianist, Susan Tomes has found that there are some issues which never go away. Here she takes up various topics of perennial interest: how music awakens and even creates memories, what "interpretation" really means, what effect daily practice has on the character, whether playing from memory is a burden or a liberation, and why the piano is the right tool for the job. She pays homage to the influence of remarkable teachers, asks what it takes for long-term chamber groups to survive the strains of professional life, and explores the link between music and health. Once again, her aim is to provide insight into the motives and experiences of classical performers. In this fourth book she also describes some of the challenges facing classical musicians in today's society, and considers why this kind of long-form music means so much to those who love it. SUSAN TOMES has won a number of international awards as a performer and recording artist, and in 2013 was awarded the Cobbett Medal for distinguished services to chamber music. For fifteen years she was the pianist of Domus, and for seventeen years she was the pianist of the Florestan Trio, one of the world's leading piano trios. She is the author of three previous books: Beyond the Notes (2004) and Out of Silence (2010), both published by Boydell, and A Musician's Alphabet (2006). She gives masterclasses, writes and presents radio programmes on music, and sits on international competition juries. Her blog on www.susantomes.com has a loyal following. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days AL FRANKEN, GIANT OF THE SENATE is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it. It's a book about our deeply polarized, frequently depressing, occasionally inspiring political culture, written from inside the belly of the beast. In this candid personal memoir, the honorable gentleman from Minnesota takes his army of loyal fans along with him from Saturday Night Live to the campaign trail, inside the halls of Congress, and behind the scenes of some of the most dramatic and/or hilarious moments of his new career in politics. Features Summary From the #1 bestselling author -- a book about an award-winning comedian who decided to run for office and then discovered why award-winning comedians tend not to do that From the no 1 bestselling author -- a book about an award-winning comedian who decided to run for office and then discovered why award-winning comedians tend not to do that. Author: Carlo Michelstaedter Publisher: University Of KwaZulu-Natal Press (2007) ISBN-10: 1869140915 ISBN-13: 9781869140915 Condition: Very Good. The dust jacket has a few scratches and light wear to the edges. Very slight bumping to spine-ends. Else an excellent copy. Binding: Hardcover with dust jacket Pages: 153 Dimensions: 23.7 x 15.6 x 1.5 cm +++ by Carlo Michelstaedter +++ Carlo Michelstaedter (1887-1910) committed suicide at the age of 23, days after completing this devastating treatise on the human condition and the course of Western civilization. This work was deemed to be so radically nihilistic, or so radically idealistic, that publishers shied away from it for decades. This new English translation brings to life the heartfelt text of the precocious Italian-Jewish writer, poet, and painter, who, refusing to compromise with life, remained loyal to his ideal of a perfect world. Keenly aware of the inevitable catastrophe that the values of his time held in store for humanity, Carlo Michelstaedter, with Persuasion and Rhetoric, also provides a pithy - albeit idiosyncratic - synthesis of the major currents of philosophical thought that held sway at the beginning of the 20th century. Its searing honesty and mordant critique have not lost any immediacy, almost a century after the work was completed as a university thesis. The reader is challenged to re-examine the dull norms, conventions, and patterns of thought all too readily adopted as humanity willingly, pathetically courts its own demise. And yet, amidst this gloomy vision, Michelstaedter forces the reader to re-appraise the here-and-now, to summon the courage to live a life worthy of being lived.

2001 first edition hardcover with dust jacket new and unread. Van Riebeeck Society second series volume 32. Anglo-Boer War, Anglo-Boereoorlog. R60 postage in SA. John (Jack) Moody Lane, born an Ulsterman, sought his fortune in the South African Republic where he became a storekeeper in the hamlet of Hartbeesfontein in the Western Transvaal. Although he accepted Republican citizenship, he remained loyal to the British cause, and was reluctant to bear arms against his mother country when he was called up to join a commando at the start of the war. As a result, he was placed in charge of the ammunition in the main laager of General Piet Cronjé. Lane saw action at Magersfontein, outside Kimberley and eventually at Paardeberg where he was captured and sent to St Helena. Throughout he retained a wry sense of humour and observed the life in the Boer camps with a sharp and critical eye.
