Wahlenbergia rivularis Seeds Wahlenbergia rivularis is another perennial wahlenbergia at Kirstenbosch. It flowers throughout the summer with beautiful white to cream bells. It prefers a slightly more damp soil than Wahlenbergia undulata and grows in full sun or semi-shade. The growth habit also differs from that of Wahlenbergia undulata. It spreads along the ground forming a groundcover of soft green leaves with white flowers about 30 cm above the ground. Wahlenbergia rivularis looks lovely planted along the edge of a path or a pond. It goes slightly dormant in winter looking a bit untidy, but remains green. Wahlenbergia rivularis roots as it spread making it easy to propagate by division, from cuttings or seed. There are about 267 species of Wahlenbergia worldwide, of which most are found in South Africa. Most of them are annuals or herbaceous perennials with bell-shaped flowers in shades of mauve, blue, white, or cream. You're buying a pack of 5 Seeds We'll supply you with all the germination & care instructions. Click Here to see more Wahlenbergia Species

Gladiolus trichonemifolius  Seeds     Gladiolus (from Latin, the diminutive of gladius, a sword) is a genus of flowering plants in the iris family (Iridaceae). Sometimes called the sword lily, the most widely-used English common name for these plants is simply gladiolus (plural gladioli or gladioluses). The genus Gladiolus contains about 260 species, of which 250 are native to sub-Saharan Africa, mostly South Africa. About 10 species are native to Eurasia. There are 160 species of Gladiolus endemic in southern Africa and 76 in tropical Africa. The fragrant flower spikes are large and one-sided. They make very good cut flowers. Gladiolus trichonemifolius grows to 30cm tall and has erect funnel-shaped cream to yellow flowers, usually tinged with pink or red during spring. The flowers are sweetly scented and open at night. They are well suited to pot culture and can therefore be taken inside at night time to enjoy the lovely fragrance. On offer is a pack of 10 Seeds We will supply you with all the germination & care instructions.   Lithops is a genus of succulent plants in the ice plant family, Aizoaceae. Members of the genus are native to southern Africa. The name is derived from the Ancient Greek words lithos, meaning "stone," ops, meaning "face," referring to the stone-like appearance of the plants. They avoid being eaten by blending in with surrounding rocks and are often known as pebble plants or living stones. The formation of the name from the Greek "-ops" means that even a single plant is called a Lithops. Finely scratched lines & lovely patterns on bodies. Sow Spring.   Most Protea occur south of the Limpopo River. However, Protea kilimanjaro is found in the chaparral zone of Mount Kenya National Park. 92% of the species occur only in the Cape Floristic Region, a narrow belt of mountainous coastal land from Clan William to Grahamstown, South Africa. The extraordinary richness and diversity of species characteristic of the Cape Flora is thought to be caused in part by the diverse landscape where populations can become isolated from each other and in time develop into separate species. Mimetes fimbriifolius is a beautiful rounded tree that was once common on Table Mountain, but its numbers have been greatly depleted by harvesting for fire wood since the eighteenth century. It is endemic to the Cape Peninsula, and good populations of this species continue to survive on the southern Peninsula especially at Silvermine and at Cape Point. At maturity Mimetes fimbriifolius develops into a stout, densely branched, wide-spreading tree up to 4 m tall and 5 m in diameter. It produces a thick, corky trunk between 25 and 60 cm in diameter which branches about half a metre above soil level. The branches are stout, stocky and repeatedly divide to produce interlocking branchlets to form a dense, rounded crown. The general appearance of this species is of rounded forms dotted or grouped, looking like vegetative tortoise shells in the fynbos landscape. Its leaves are numerous, upwardly overlapping, and so closely packed together at the ends of the branches that they obscure the branch structure of specimens in their prime. Old, senescent specimens become more ragged and may lose shape and expose the gnarled branch structure beneath. The leaves are oblong to elliptic and have a thick fringe of white pubescent hairs on the margins. Mimetes flower heads are cylindrical and about 6080 mm long and 6070 mm across and consist of a combination of flower headlets, coloured leaves and bracts. Each flower head consists of up to15 headlets (groups of flowers) which are borne in the axils of the uppermost foliage leaves of a flowering branch. There are four to seven flowers in each headlet and each headlet is clasped from above by a reddish yellow, cowl-shaped leaf. The styles are 4550 mm long and red. The pollen presenter is 57 mm long and spindle-shaped. Mimetes fimbriifolius is generally less colourful than M. cucullatus, but some trees produce lovely red leaves at the ends of flowering branches during flowering and provide spectacularly colourful tree specimens. This colouring of the leaves around the flower heads is variable and a tree that displays magnificent colour in one year may not do so in another year.Flowering may occur all year, but mainly from July to December, with a peak in September.   Erythrina lysistemon is a lovely, small to medium-sized, deciduous tree with a spreading crown and brilliant red flowers. It is a handsome tree at any time of the year, and its dazzling flowers have made it one of the best known and widely grown South African trees. This is a stocky, thickset tree that often branches low down and usually grows up to 10 m in height, occasionally reaching 12 m. The bark is smooth and dark gray to gray-brown and is not thickly corky. Short, hooked prickles are sparsely and randomly scattered on the trunk and branches. The leaves are trifoliolate (compound leaves with 3 leaflets), and each leaflet is large, usually up to 17 x 18 cm. The petiole, rachis and the midrib have hooked prickles on them. The common coral tree blooms in early spring and it produces its flowers before its new leaves or just as the leaves begin to show. The genus Ceropegia belongs to the Asclepiadoideae sub-family within the family Apocynaceae. Species of this genus bear similarities to the carrion flowers or Stapelia s. There are between 160 and 200 species worldwide and they are found widely from the Canary Islands, Africa, Madagascar, Arabia, India, Sri Lanka, southern China, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea and Queensland. It was named by Carl Linnaeus, who first described this genus in volume 1 of his Species plantarum, which appeared in 1753. Linnaeus thought that the flowers looked like a fountain of wax. From this the scientific name was derived: ‘ keros ’ meaning wax and ‘ pege ’ meaning fountain. They have many common names including lantern flower, parasol flower, parachute flower, bushman’s pipe, string of hearts, snake creeper, wine-glass vine, rosary vine and necklace vine.           Ceropegia species have attracted much attention from botanists, horticulturalists, gardeners and succulent plant enthusiasts. Numerous species are commercially available and grown as ornamental container and indoor plants. They can be propagated by seed and cuttings. Ceropegia woodii commonly known as String of Hearts or Rosary Vine is an excellent hanging plant with long, pendulous stems and small heart-shaped leaves. Leaves are dark green and marbled with silver. String of Hearts is indigenous to South Africa but also appears in South Zimbabwe. They bloom from summer to autumn. The 2.5cm tall flowers resemble small upturned vases which are bulbous at the base. Over time this plant will produce a lovely above ground caudex.

The genus Moraea belongs to the Iridaceae family and is a close relative of the genus Iris. It is accepted that it evolved independently from Iris itself, which is restricted to the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore, it is strictly an African genus extending from Nigeria and southern Ethiopia, into the African highlands down to the southern tip of Africa where winter rainfall is predominant. Many are indigenous to South Africa. It is in the winter rainfall area where one finds the highest concentration of Moraea species. They have long narrow basal leaves, sometimes only one per corm and large yellow, pink, orange, or bicolor flowers with six fairly equal tepals. The genus name is a tribute to the English botanist Robert Moore. Moraea s have iris-like flowers. They make good potted plants and are suitable rockery plants too. Most enjoy well-drained soil and full sun to flower best. Moraea papilionacea is a South African endemic species from the Western Cape where it is found from the Cederberg Mountains to Bredasdorp where it is predominantly found growing among Fynbos mostly on sandstone soils. It grows to 15cm tall and has lovely scented salmon pink and yellow flowers with yellow nectar guides. This plant flowers from spring to summer. Seeds of this species are best sown during autumn.

Wilhelm Ploner's fascination with the colours of our scenery in South Africa is clearly depicted in this lovely oil on board of a farm scene. WILHELM “WILLIE” HERBERT PLONER BORN – VIENNA, AUSTRIA Though not distinguishing himself in art at school, Willie, as he's better known, confesses that he drew and painted a bit.  At age 18 he became more focused and enrolled at the Kunsthockschule in Vienna.  Having learned the basics he found that Austria was quite restrictive in spite of the sixties revolution in arts and music which transpired in Britain and the U.S.A. In he immigrated to South Africa and was immediately overwhelmed by the colours, contrasts and total abundance of wildlife and scenery – not to mention space. Willie became more confident and competent in both oils and acrylics as his landscapes, floral studies and portraiture began to show.  He learned by criticism and the way in which his commissions were received.  Galleries were soon taking up his work and the requests for portraiture increased. This suited Willie’s style of insightful realism, preferring to work from photographic references rather than from real life sittings.  “They always want to talk and fidget and then my concentration wavers”, Willie comments. Many of his portraits have been given as gifts without the knowledge of the subjects. Size: 75cmx60cm (Framed), 60cm x 44cm (Unframed) - Good condition   Some more notable names and portraits completed are of Nelson Mandela, Louis Luyt, Cyril Ramaphosa and Tokyo Sexwale.
