A4 size softcover book brand new. R45 postage in SA.   ‘ … You know that you are really famous the day that you discover that you have become a comic character!’ - Nelson Mandela  Nelson Mandela was called a terrorist, forced into hiding, captured, threatened with the death penalty and eventually thrown into jail for twenty-seven years, but nothing could stop him from fighting to liberate his country from the evil of apartheid. A hero in the struggle against a terrible regime, he never gave up. Even when he was a prisoner, he worked secretly with his comrades to undermine the oppressive apartheid government. This is the exciting true story of a young herd boy who was to grow up to become a lawyer, a freedom fighter, South Africa’s first democratically elected president and the beloved grandfather of a nation. It is told here in words and pictures for the young and the young at heart: a story to read with enjoyment and remember with pride.

By Ian Knight. 2001. Hard cover with dust cover; 290 pages. Very good condition; as new. Under 1kg. On the afternoon of 1 June 1879, in a muddy gully in the heart of Zululand, the ambitions of France's Bonaparte dynasty came to a tragic and violent end. A patrol of British troops, in the vanguard of an invading column, was ambushed by the Zulu, and fled, leaving three men dead on the field. Among them was Prince Louis Napoleon, the exiled heir to the Imperial throne in France, the last of the Bonapartes. What curious combination of circumstances had brought the Prince Imperial to southern Africa, wearing the uniform of - of all things - a British office? His was a romantic and melancholy story. Chased out of France after the debacle of the Franco-Prussian War, the Emperor Napoleon III had sought refuge with his family in England, where they were befriended by Queen Victoria. Napoleon's son, Louis, had grown to manhood in exile, succeeding on his father's death to the title of Napoleon IV, and awaiting a call to reclaim his throne, which might never have come. Raised in the shadow of the reputation of the great Napoleon, he hungered for military glory, and by special dispensation was allowed to train as a British officer. As a foreign Prince, however, and a Bonaparte, there was never any hope that he might serve in the British army, but when the Anglo-Zulu War broke out in 1879 he was allowed to go to Africa as an observer, attached to General Lord Chelmsford's staff. The war seemed to offer him the perfect chance for military experience without European political repercussions, and with a minimum of danger. This was not to be.

The voice of Nelson Mandela, imprisoned in and sworn in as South Africa's president 30 years later, was preserved forever with the launch of a CD featuring his most famous speeches. The 83-year-old spent 18 years in a tiny prison cell on Robben Island just off the coast of Cape Town and the remaining years in a nearby jail, before his release in . The CD, entitled "The Voice of Mandela", includes his liberation speech, his swearing-in as president, as well as the famous speech by apartheid's last president, Frederik de Klerk, announcing freedom of movement for blacks and Mandela's imminent release. Perhaps the most compelling piece of oratory on the CD is Mandela's defence speech at his trial in Rivonia outside Johannesburg, where he faced a death sentence on charges of plotting and sabotage. "During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people", Mandela said at his trial. "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination". "I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which everybody lives together in harmony and with equal opportunities", Mandela continued. "It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die".

MANDELA 100 ¿ RARE LIMITED-EDITION COVER CANCELLED AT HOUGTHON ON MADIBA'S DEATH   Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18 July 1918 - 5 December 2013) served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative, multiracial election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as the President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1991 to 1997. Internationally, Mandela was the Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999. A Xhosa born to the Thembu royal family, Mandela attended Fort Hare University and the University of Witwatersrand, where he studied law. Living in Johannesburg, he became involved in anti-colonial politics, joining the ANC and becoming a founding member of its Youth League. After the National Party came to power in 1948 and began implementing the policy of apartheid, he rose to prominence in the ANC's 1952 Defiance Campaign, was elected President of the Transvaal ANC Branch and oversaw the 1955 Congress of the People. Working as a lawyer, he was repeatedly arrested for seditious activities and, with the ANC leadership, was prosecuted in the Treason Trial from 1956 to 1961 but was found not guilty. Although initially committed to non-violent protest, in association with the South African Communist Party he co-founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1961, leading a bombing campaign against government targets. In 1962 he was arrested, convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial. Mandela served 27 years in prison, first on Robben Island, and later in Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. An international campaign lobbied for his release, which was granted in 1990 amid escalating civil strife. Becoming ANC President, Mandela published his autobiography and led negotiations with President F.W. de Klerk to abolish apartheid and establish multiracial elections in 1994, in which he led the ANC to victory. He was elected President and formed a Government of National Unity in an attempt to defuse ethnic tensions. As President, he established a new constitution and initiated the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses. Continuing the former government's liberal economic policy, his administration introduced measures to encourage land reform, combat poverty and expand healthcare services. Internationally, he acted as mediator between Libya and the United Kingdom in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing trial, and oversaw military intervention in Lesotho. He declined to run for a second term, and was succeeded by his deputy Thabo Mbeki, subsequently becoming an elder statesman, focusing on charitable work in combating poverty and HIV/AIDS through the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Controversial for much of his life, right-wing critics denounced Mandela as a terrorist and communist sympathiser. He has nevertheless received international acclaim for his anti-colonial and anti-apartheid stance, having received over 250 awards, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize, the US Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Soviet Order of Lenin. He is held in deep respect within South Africa, where he is often referred to by his Xhosa clan name of Madiba or as Tata meaning Father; he is often described as "the father of the nation". The cover is in clean condition.   Sent by registered / parcel post (free for orders over R250). Feel free to combine with any other items.
