About the product These are the first two volumes in the'African Hunting Reprint Series.'Text facsimile reprint of the two-volume John Murray 2nd edition of 1850, with a new introduction by Professor James A. Casada. Two 8vo volumes; original brown boards with gilt lettering to spine, and gilt elephant device to upper board in each case; pictorial dustwrappers; pp. xvii + xv + (i) + 388, (iv) + 381; plates, + route map in first volume. Dustwrappers slightly rubbed and edgeworn; a little foxing to endpapers, edges and reverse of dustwrappers, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition.'A particularly fine example of Victorian sporting literature, the book was markedly successful and ran to many editions. Gordon-Cumming writes of his hunting expedition which started from Grahamstown in October 1843 and which took him through countryside teeming with game -"not with herds, but with'one vast herd'of springboks; as far as the eye could strain."- to the Orange River and Griqualand West where he met Oswell, and, at Kuruman, Robert Moffat and, soon after, David Livingstone. He appears to have hunted every species of South African fauna and to have indulged himself in the sport to an extent almost unique even amongst the mighty hunters of Africa. The narrative is valuable for its description of the country and its inhabitants, and for its zoological and botanical notes.'

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days It is the ultimate quest for the ultimate treasure. Chasing a map tattooed on human skin. Across an omniverse of intersecting realities. To unravel the future of the future. Kit Livingstone's great-grandfather appears to him in a deserted alley during a tumultuous storm. He reveals an unbelievable story: that the ley lines throughout Britain are not merely the stuff of legend or the weekend hobby of deluded cranks, but pathways to other worlds. To those who know how to use them, they grant the ability to travel the multi-layered universe of which we ordinarily inhabit only a tiny part. One explorer knew more than most. Braving every danger, he toured both time and space on voyages of heroic discovery. Ever on his guard and fearful of becoming lost in the cosmos, he developed an intricate code--a roadmap of symbols--that he tattooed onto his own body. This Skin Map has since been lost in time. Now the race is on to recover all the pieces and discover its secrets. But the Skin Map itself is not the ultimate goal. It is merely the beginning of a vast and marvelous quest for a prize beyond imagining. The Bright Empires series--from acclaimed author Stephen R. Lawhead--is a unique blend of epic treasure hunt, ancient history, alternate realities, cutting-edge physics, philosophy, and mystery. The result is a page-turning, adventure like no other. "Anything but ordinary... Dynamic settings are mixed with unpredictable adventures and] parallel worlds." --"BookPage" Features Summary When Kit Livingstone finds out that the ley lines throughout Britain are pathways to other worlds, he sets out on a quest to find the Skin Map--the body of the most storied explorer who tattooed the ley lines' codes on his skin.. The Caliban Shore: The Fate of the Grosvenor Castaways The Grosvenor was one of the finest East Indiamen of her day, but she ran aground on the treacherous coast of south-east Africa. An astonishing number of her crew and passengers, including women and children, reached the shore safely, but the castaways found themselves hundreds of miles from the nearest European outpost - and utterly ignorant of their surroundings and the people among whom they found themselves. Drawing upon much new research, Stephen Taylor pieces together this extraordinary saga, sifting the myths that became attached to The Grosvenor from a reality that is no less gripping. Taking the reader to the heart of what is now the Wild Coast of Pondoland, he reveals the misunderstandings that led to tragedy, tells the story of those who escaped, and unravels the mystery of those who stayed. About the author Stephen Taylor grew up in South Africa, and after moving to Britain worked as a foreign correspondent for The Times in Africa, Asia and Australia. He is the author of several celebrated books on Africa, including The Mighty Nimrod and Livingstone's Tribe: A Journey from Zanzibar to the Cape. The Caliban Shore was called 'a wonderful book' by Paul Theroux and his most recent book, Storm and Conquest, was called 'a triumph... a ripping yarn founded on original research' in the Guardian. Author Stephen Taylor ISBN 9780571210725 Format Paperback Pages 297p.

*Signed* 1st Edition.Africa - In The Footsteps of the Great Explorers - Kingsley Holgate Book is in VG Condition. No tears, folds etc..Pages clean crisp and white!! Fans of Kingsley Holgate and his wild adventures, tackled fearlessly with his wife Gill and son Ross and a varying band of expedition members, will relish this series of epic exploits. Always game to venture where many before him have feared to tread, Kingsley and his entourage have set out to honor those tough, courageous early explorers of the African continent. David Livingstone, Henry Morton Stanley, Frederick Courtney Selous, John Hanning Speke and others all faced starvation, fever and often death to open up Africa to the Western world. Like these brave and tenacious individuals, the Holgate party tackle mighty rivers such as the Nile, Congo, Rovuma and Ru ji, negotiating angry rapids, thrashing with crocodiles and startling territorial hippos. Circumnavigating Africa's greatest lakes - Niassa, Victoria and Tanganyika - they battle demonic high winds and water, and endure the blistering furnace of the desolate lava-bouldered Jade Sea's shores. These are tales of such daring, courage and endurance that it is impossible for readers to tire of the Holgate family's high adventures. The adventures are illustrated with photographs, line drawings and historical maps.
