South Africa, Crocodile, Gold Plated bar, Nature, Animal, Wild Edition Technical Specs Presentation Country:   Metal Purity:    Gold Plated, Gilded Box:   Year of Issue:   Weight:   1 oz CoA:   Face Value:   Dimensions:   44x 28¿mm     Quality:       Mintage:     New bar with capsule The Crocodilia (or Crocodylia) are an order of mostly large, predatory, semiaquatic reptiles. They appeared 83.5 million years ago in the Late Cretaceous period (Campanian stage) and are the closest living relatives of birds, as the two groups are the only known survivors of the Archosauria. Members of the crocodilian total group, the clade Pseudosuchia, appeared about 250 million years ago in the Early Triassic period, and diversified during the Mesozoic era. The order Crocodilia includes the true crocodiles (family Crocodylidae), the alligators and caimans (family Alligatoridae), and the gharial and false gharial (family Gavialidae). Although the term 'crocodiles' is sometimes used to refer to all of these, a less ambiguous vernacular term for this group is crocodilians. ____________________________________________________  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days Alistair Urquhart was a soldier in the Gordon Highlanders, captured by the Japanese in Singapore. Forced into manual labor as a POW, he survived 750 days in the jungle working as a slave on the notorious "Death Railway" and building the Bridge on the River Kwai. Subsequently, he moved to work on a Japanese "hellship," his ship was torpedoed, and nearly everyone on board the ship died. Not Urquhart. After five days adrift on a raft in the South China Sea, he was rescued by a Japanese whaling ship. His luck would only get worse as he was taken to Japan and forced to work in a mine near Nagasaki. Two months later, he was just ten miles from ground zero when an atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. In late August , he was freed by the American Navy--a living skeleton--and had his first wash in three and a half years. This is the extraordinary story of a young man, conscripted at nineteen, who survived not just one, but three encounters with death, any of which should have probably killed him. Silent for over fifty years, this is Urquhart's inspirational tale in his own words. It is as moving as any memoir and as exciting as any great war movie. Condition: Good. Maya Angelou's seven volumes of autobiography are a testament to the talents and resilience of this extraordinary writer. Loving the world, she also knows its cruelty. As a black woman she has known discrimination and extreme poverty, but also hope, joy, achievement and celebration. The fourth volume of her enthralling autobiography finds Maya Angelou immersed in the world of black writers and artists in Harlem, working in the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King. Maya Angelou has... achieved a kind of literary breakthrough which few writers of any time, place, or race achieve.... What makes [her] writing unique is... a melding of unconcerned honesty, consummate craft, and perfect descriptive pitch, yielding a rare compound of great emotional force and authenticity. -The Washington Post Book World To say that Angelou is a living legend is in no way an exaggeration. [She is] one of the great voices of contemporary literature. -The Voice Angelou is one of the geniuses of the Afro-American serial autobiography. -The New York Times About the author () Maya Angelou - Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson on April in Saint Louis, Missouri. She attended public school in Stamps, Arkansas and San Francisco, California. She is perhaps best known for her semi-autobiographical work "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", and for the tireless effort she puts forth to make the world aware. In her youth, Angelou traveled the world, eventually marrying a South African freedom fighter and settling in Cairo, where she edited The Arab Observer, the only English language weekly newspaper in the Middle East. They later moved to Ghana where she was Features Editor of The African Review and taught at the University of Ghana. In the 60's, Dr, Martin Luther King requested that Angelou return to the US to become the northern coordinator of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. She was later appointed to the Bicentennial Commission by President Ford and to the National Commission on the Observance of International Women's Year by President Carter. "Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'Fore I Die" was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in . Ten years later, in , Angelou was appointed to the lifetime position of Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University. Angelou became only the second poet in United States history to write and recite an original poem at a Presidential Inauguration; in she read "On the Pulse of Morning" at President Clinton's Inauguration Ceremony. In , Angelou received an amazing amount of honors. Her semi-autobiographical tale, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", which was originally published in , became the longest running nonfiction best seller by an African American on the New York Times Bestsellers List. That same year, "A Brave and Startling Truth" was recited at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the United Nations, and "From a Black Woman to a Black Man" was recited at the Million Man March in Washington D. C.. Angelou is best known, however, for the five books of her autobiography, beginning with "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" (), which she adapted for television, through "All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes" (). Angelou's collection of essays entitled "Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now" was published in . She has assumed the roles of poet, educator, historian, author, actress, playwright, civil rights activist, producer and director. Angelou had also appeared in the movie "Roots" and was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in for her role in the movie. She also had a role in the movie, "How to Make an American Quilt" and wrote and produced "Afro-Americans in the Arts", a PBS special for which she received a Golden Eagle Award. 2005 paperback with 298 pages in good condition. R50 postage in SA. Beginning in 1963, this fascinating story follows the fortunes of Donovan 'Mac' Mackay as he emerges from the end of schooling. He is initiated into manhood when he becomes a mercenary recruited by a logging company to protect their interests in the Congo. They wish to extract hardwood timber from the forests before everything descends into chaos. His grandfather, on hearing a news item appealing for men in South Africa to volunteer their services, encourages him to seize the opportunity. Mac's prospects look bleak after his expulsion from school following a brawl. He considers making a go of the farm, where his grandparents struggle to scrape a living from the poor land, but finally decides to seek adventure and possible fortune as his only chance to save the farm. Nothing could prepare him for the brutality and horror of the situation into which he is thrown. Together with the motley collection of men in his unit, Mac faces the formidable force of the Teng warriors and their Mongu brothers. These warriors are being exploited but are backed politically and financially by foreign powers who want to de-stabilise the area. There is witchcraft involved and he becomes increasingly uneasy about his role, because he is aware that these tribesmen are actually protecting their forest. They only wish to live their lives in peace. However, he has been drawn in and finds himself becoming hardened to the killing. As the story unfolds, Mac and his unit are ordered to rescue Catholic nuns from a Mission hospital which is being attacked by the Mongu Teng warriors. During all this turmoil, he strikes up a relationship with a beautiful young nun, 'Sister' Lily. As his contract comes to an end, his mind is full of questions about the future. He has lost touch with his family and friends at home. It seems he also has been exploited. What are the prospects when he returns to the farm? What role will Lily play in this future he is so unsure about? Can he trust her to keep faith in him?

A 242 page book (27 black & white photos) about Dave Barrs incredible 13,000 mile winter journey across a frozen Northern Europe, Russia and Siberia on a 96 Harley-Davidson Sportser. Not surprisingly this extraordinary adventure allowed Dave to establish a Guinness Book World Record. This book is living proof that perseverance and an unshakable belief in ones dreams can make anything happen! Available in hard and soft cover. About Dave Barr In 1969, at age 17, Dave began his military career with the U.S. Marine Corps, receiving 57 air medals while serving on a helicopter gunship in Vietnam. He left the Marines in 1972, but felt the need to seek adventure and another cause. He chose to support peace and stability first in Israel, later in Zimbabwe/Rhodesia and finally in South Africa. Following a fateful landmine explosion in 1981 whilst with the SADF's 44th Parachute Brigade, Dave sustained life threatening injuries that ultimately resulted in the amputation of both of his legs. After a lengthy rehabilitative period, he returned to active duty completing his military enlistment. Upon returning to the United States, he was reunited with his family and his 10-year-old Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Inspired after his first ride since the explosion, Dave decided to travel around the world on his Harley. It was his hope that he would encourage others to overcome their obstacles and make their own dreams a reality. The Dave Barr Foundation was established to support charitable organizations, both in the U.S. and overseas, that are dedicated to improving the lives of the disabled.

Boer War: Buitengewone Staats-Courant Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek  (Dated 27 November 1899). This item is an ORIGINAL,  period piece and is in EXCELLENT CONDITION.  A physical reminder of the most prominent conflict that shaped South Africa's history. This Buitengewone Staats-Courant was published on Monday, the 27th of November 1899 -  a month after the outbreak of hostilities at Colenso. The body of text is printed in Dutch and proclaims that all free citizens (burghers) of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek,  who qualify for and who have been called up for military service / commando duties - are no longer able to cancel their life insurance policies.  This was legislated to prevent the premature withdrawal of funds associated with policies due to the possibility of early death associated with conflict.   The text of the document is clear and is not obscured. Please note that the item is nearly 120 years old - so the paper will show signs of age and some discolouration.   An ideal historical piece, documenting the early days of the Anglo-Boer War, from the perspective of those living in the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek. A wonderful addition that would take pride of place to any collection of Boer memorabilia.   FOREIGN BIDDERS TO PAY USING BOB BUCKS -QUOTED SHIPPING  NO COLLECTIONS  PAYMENT IN 7 DAYS OR SNC  SEE SHIPPING

From the searing heat of the Zambezi Valley to the freezing cold of the Chimanimani Mountains in Rhodesia, from the bars in Port St Johns in the Transkei to the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa, this is the story of one man's fight against terror, and his conscience. Anyone living in Rhodesia during the 1960s and 1970s would have had a father, husband, brother or son called up in the defense of the war-torn, landlocked little country. A few of these brave men would have been members of the elite and secretive unit that struck terror into the hearts of the ZANLA and ZIPRA guerrillas infiltrating the country at that time - the Selous Scouts. These men were highly trained and disciplined, with skills to rival the SAS, Navy Seals and the US Marines, although their dress and appearance were wildly unconventional: civilian clothing with blackened, hairy faces to resemble the very people they were fighting against. Twice decorated - with the Member of the Legion of Merit (MLM) and the Military Forces' Commendation (MFC) - Andrew Balaam was a member of the Rhodesian Light Infantry and later the Selous Scouts, for a period spanning twelve years. This is his honest and insightful account of his time as a pseudo operator. His story is brutally truthful, frightening, sometimes humorous and often sad. In later years, after Rhodesia became Zimbabwe, he was involved with a number of other former Selous Scouts in the attempted coups in the Ciskei, a South African homeland, and Lesotho, an independent nation, whose only crimes were supporting the African National Congress. Training terrorists, or as they preferred to be called, 'liberation armies', to conduct a war of terror on innocent civilians, was the very thing he had spent the last ten years in Rhodesia fighting against. This is the true, untold story of these failed attempts at governmental overthrows This book is imported on demand and dispatched within 15 working days depending on supplier Specifications Author: Andrew Balaam Binding: Paperback EAN: 9781909982772 ISBN: 1909982776 Label: Helion and Company Manufacturer: Helion and Company Number Of Pages: 288 PublicationDate: 2014-11-19 Publisher: Helion and Company Studio: Helion and Company

Shaking Hands with Billy is a book that goes behind the scenes into the top secret world of the South African security force community during the build-up to the country's first democratic elections in 1994. The book reads at three different levels, because that moment in time is embedded in a set of regional dynamics, by which the author  is profoundly affected, but has no direct control. This means that the book is about the integrity of a human being living in times of great uncertainty when the questioning of orders is being dealt with by a secret death squad authorised under Project Barnacle to eliminate own forces using only his deeply anchored moral compass as his guide. Shaking Hands with Billy is thus the story of a man accepting full responsibility for his actions as a soldier turned peace-maker, while justifying those actions to the people he cares the most for his two children and immediate family. The book is written in a deeply personal way, as a father explaining to his two children, both now adult, why he was not always there while they were growing up, in a land divided, surrounded by secrecy. The foreword is by James Workman and the prologue is by the author. Paperback, 556 pages.   ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Anthony Turton served in 2 Light Horse Regiment, 81 Armoured Brigade, and was recruited into a special operations unit that was created to avenge the Pretoria car bombing. He then served in the Chief Directorate Covert Operations of NIS and later became a founding member of the South African Secret Service. Anthony is currently a trained scientist specializing in water resource management as a strategic issue with a robust publication record. He's also a professional speaker, consultant, writer and poet

Border-Line Insanity offers the reader an insight into the life of a conscripted soldier in the South African army during the dark days of apartheid. In 1984 I was thrust into a scary world of strict order and discipline as a teenage school graduate, experiencing subtle brain washing as I became molded into a white soldier for the mandatory two-year term. The reader is taken through the training, character building and bonds of camaraderie, before being dispatched into a bush life ripe with fear on the border line of South-West Africa/Namibia and Angola. From one patrol to the next we experienced the insanities that came with the hardship as we survived with an iron will under intense heat and heavy rainfall upon a land we scorned. Having seen and smelled innocent death on one border, only to have three troops from my section captured on another, and held prisoner under deplorable conditions in Mozambique. Experiencing real life fears in 1988, as we massed up in a mechanized armoured brigade as Citizen Force soldiers on the South-West African/Angolan border, in wait for an attack against Cuban and Angolan forces, with our fate a living hell in itself. With the army still breathing deeply in me, I left South Africa (after having served two and a half years) for a solo backpacking adventure across exotic parts of the world and behind the iron curtain, which lasted five years. In 2003 I returned to an independent Namibia to bury some tension, anxiety and hatred for a people, a land and a life where much of my ill feeling had been born only to fester silently for many years ahead. In so doing I had come full circle to closing a chapter never to be lived again and one certainly never to be forgotten. Paperback, 352pp; 32pp pages of colour pics and map Published: March 2007

Having left English public schooling Nick decided that he should return to Rhodesia in 1979 to enlist. This is a story of how, having joined up, he had his leg amputated at the age of 17 and continued to serve as a trained combat medic for both the Rhodesian Forces and later the Zimbabwe National Army. This is his story of having served in the Rhodesian Light Infantry and discharged aged 20 years old, how he survived and made a life for himself despite being an amputee. His anecdotal story of life after Rhodesia and how, as an ex-serviceman, he managed to make his way in the cut-throat commercial world of South Africa. Being a medical story there is dark humour, some gore and the everyday experiences of living and running a business in modern South Africa. Paperback, 162 pages.
