It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends. It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth's son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up... Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds. In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity. Laying bare the comfortable conventions of rural England, this spine-tingling novel pulses with suspense until the whiplash double-twist of the denouement. I've put this story together from the diaries I kept when Zac and I were children. I wrote them because I felt we were almost invisible and I wanted to make sure our story was told, and also in the hope that life would get better for the small unloved girl that was me, and my even smaller unloved brother. And if life didn't get better or at least more interesting I was going to make it up - to put in witches and castles and rides in fast cars. But I didn't need to. Life got exciting all by itself...It's 1987 and Ira and Zac are being uprooted once again, this time to Skilly House, a home for social care children. Their lives over the next few years are beautifully realised amongst the antipathy of the authorities, the drama of the poll tax riots and the moments of peace and hope Ira finds at Skilly and further afield. This is a memorable and moving tale about growing up, making friends and finding a home. Format:Paperback Pages:0

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days A House for Mouse tells the story of a little grey mouse who leaves his tiny hole in the forest to explore the wider world. On his search for a new home he unwittingly encounters some of the biggest stars in the fairytale genre. He discovers a house shaped like a shoe (belonging to Old Mother Hubbard); he takes tea with a little pig in a house made of straw (awfully breezy); is flummoxed by a tower with no door (Rapunzel's); and dares to take a nibble from a most remarkable house made of gingerbread (narrowly missing Hansel and Gretel). The little grey mouse is about to give up his search for a new home when he comes face to face with the most spectacular house of all: a glorious, towering castle (Sleeping Beauty's). Its ballrooms, turrets and drawbridge win him over, and he moves in immediately. But the little grey mouse feels terribly alone in his roomy new digs - until there is a knock at the door. His friends from the forest, and all those he has met on his journey, descend on the castle. Their feasting and dancing are so happy and lively that they even wake Sleeping Beauty, leading the little grey mouse to conclude that it is family and friends that turn a house into a home. Detailed in the census records and other sources, these very real residents - ranging from bodice-makers by way of booksellers (and a bigamist) to that glamorous, though unemployed, Irish barrister - are all now long gone, but their footsteps are etched into the floorboards at Finborough Road, and into the imagination of the author. In these pages, Clare Hastings's warmth, humour and compelling storytelling bring them back to life. Discusses the disease-carrying propensities of the House Fly."If a few score of venomous snakes accidentally escaped in a town, there would be a profound sensation, and a sense of insecurity of life would be ever present until they were destroyed. Yet the presence of five hundred cobras scattered throughout a city would be as nothing in comparison to the awful, the appalling danger and risks incurred by the presence of the common House Fly."
